Star Guardian Taliyah

First game I played with Star Guardian Taliyah was a late night ranked session, maybe 1 AM on a Wednesday. Locked her in mid, loaded up, and the splash screen hit me before anything else did. Julia Yurtsev nailed the splash. The colors, the pose, the little familiar floating beside her. Felt like Riot actually remembered Taliyah exists for once. Not gonna lie, I had low expectations going in because Taliyah skins historically get the short end, but this one caught me off guard.

VFX and what actually changes in game

The Q is where you notice it first. Worked ground rocks swap out for these bright magical crystals, pinks and purples flying across the lane. Looks clean against the Rift backdrop, easy to track in teamfights. Her W pops with a star burst effect when it erupts, and the E mines scatter as these little guardian sigils on the ground. Pretty satisfying to watch someone walk through them.

Recall animation is solid. She does this whole transformation sequence with her familiar, very on brand for the Star Guardian line. Been running this in Diamond since patch 12.14 dropped and the recall alone gets compliments in chat maybe once every ten games. Small detail but it matters.

R is where it gets interesting. The wall she surfs on becomes this streak of starlight. Roaming bot lane with it feels cinematic, like youre in an anime opening. The wall itself has sparkle particles trailing behind. Could be wrong here but I think the surfing animation is slightly different too, or maybe the new colors just make it read differently.

Voice lines stay base. No new VO which is expected at 1350 RP. Standard for an Epic tier skin. Base Taliyah voice is fine anyway, Erica Lindbeck did good work on the original.

Star Guardian Season 4 and the release window

Star Guardian Taliyah dropped July 28, 2022. Right in the middle of the massive Star Guardian Season 4 event that summer. Huge batch of skins. Kai’Sa, Ekko, Sona, Akali all got theirs in the same cycle. Taliyah was kind of the quiet pick in that lineup.

(Random aside: the Star Guardian event that year was genuinely one of the better visual novel events Riot put out, even if the grind was brutal.)

9 chromas total. Tanzanite is my personal pick, the deep purple fits the magical girl aesthetic harder than base. Obsidian goes full dark mode which is cool if you want edgy Star Guardian energy, and Brilliant has this pink to blue gradient thats pretty unique. Rest are standard fare. The skinline itself has been going strong since season 6 I think, and Taliyah fits the theme naturally. Earth mage turned magical girl. Makes sense.

Julia Yurtsev on the splash art, they captured this hopeful adventurer energy perfectly. Taliyah looks younger in it, which tracks with Star Guardian lore. Shop has it for 1350 RP. Permanent shop, grab whenever.

How it plays and who should care

Real talk though. Taliyah mains dont have a massive selection to work with. Freljord is clean but basic. SSG is legacy. Pool Party exists. Star Guardian Taliyah is probably the best option if you want something that feels premium without dropping Legendary money.

Spammed this in Diamond for maybe 40 games last season. The VFX clarity is genuinely good. In bot lane specifically when I was running her APC, the Q particles read well against river and lane. Never felt like the skin put me at a disadvantage visually, which sounds basic but some skins genuinely mess with your ability tracking.

Kinda feels like Riot gave Taliyah mains exactly what they needed here. Not groundbreaking, not a rework of her identity, just a clean Epic skin with good VFX and a strong theme. The 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. If you one-trick Taliyah or even just have her in your mid rotation, this is the skin. Been daily driving it over Pool Party for three splits now and I keep coming back.

Should you buy it?

Verdict time. Best Taliyah skin full stop. The Star Guardian theme works, the VFX are above average for an Epic, and 9 chromas give you options if base pink isnt your thing. Skip it if you literally never play Taliyah. But if she’s anywhere in your champ pool, this is the one to own. 1350 RP well spent for mains. Seen maybe 3 of these in my games all season which is a shame because the skin deserves more play. Might be the most underrated Star Guardian release from that whole 2022 batch.
