Star Guardian Rell

Not gonna lie, when Riot announced Star Guardian Rell I thought they were trolling. Rell? The iron maiden of bot lane? In a magical girl skinline? But then the splash dropped and I sat there for a solid minute just staring. Park Jun Seong and West Studio nailed the splash. The armor redesign keeps her identity while going full celestial knight, and the color palette hits this soft lavender that I wasnt expecting to like as much as I do.

How Star Guardian Rell actually plays

The VFX rework is where this skin earns its 1350 RP. Her W transformation, the mounted-to-dismounted swap, gets these starlight particle bursts that look clean in teamfights. You know what surprised me? The E particles. The tether between you and your ADC gets this constellation thread effect that actually makes it easier to track in chaotic fights around dragon pit. Been running this in Diamond support games since it dropped and the visual clarity is genuinely better than base.

Q sends out this arc of star energy instead of the metallic lance. Reads well against the Rift. Her ult pulls enemies in with a gravitational starburst effect, and in a 5v5 engage comp it looks incredible. Played maybe 40 games with this skin the first two weeks after release and the engage combos just feel more satisfying with the new particles. Could be placebo. Probably is.

New recall animation too. Rell does this whole guardian transformation sequence with her mount. Standard stuff for Star Guardian skins but its well executed. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is fine. Laya DeLeon Hayes already did solid work on the original voice pack.

Star Guardian Season 4 and the details

Star Guardian Rell released July 28, 2022. Right in the middle of season 12. This was the massive Star Guardian Season 4 wave, the one that brought in Kai’Sa, Ekko, Sona, and a bunch of others. Huge event. Kinda feels like Rell got overshadowed in that lineup because everyone was losing their minds over Star Guardian Ekko and the Kai’Sa legendary.

The Star Guardian line is one of Riot’s most consistent skinlines. Season 4 expanded the roster hard and Rell fits the theme better than I expected. The iron maiden goes celestial guardian. There’s a natural tension there that works.

9 chromas total. Obsidian is my pick, turns the whole palette dark and moody which contrasts the magical girl aesthetic in a way that just hits different. Pearl goes almost white-on-white, very clean for the minimalist crowd. Brilliant does this pink-to-blue gradient that honestly might be the flashiest option if you want to stand out in lane. (Random aside: the Obsidian chroma on Star Guardian Rell is my lobby hover skin when I want to intimidate the enemy support in champ select. Probably doesnt work but I like to think it does.)

Should you buy Star Guardian Rell?

Real verdict: if you play Rell at all, this is a strong pickup. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX upgrade genuinely improves the skin over base, the recall is solid, and 9 chromas give you options for months. Permanent shop, grab it whenever.

Fair warning though. If you’re picking between this and Battle Queen Rell, thats a harder call. Battle Queen has a different vibe entirely. Star Guardian Rell leans into the team fantasy, the guardian protecting her carry. Battle Queen is more solo aggression energy. For ranked support play specifically, I keep coming back to Star Guardian. The tether VFX on E alone makes it worth considering.

Been maining Rell with this skin on and off since late 2022. Last Tuesday I hit a 5-man ult in a Diamond game around baron and the starburst effect made it look like a highlight clip. My Kayn jungler pinged the emote wheel for a solid 10 seconds after. Skip this if you never touch Rell, but for support mains who want peel and engage with style, top pick for Rell mains. 1350 RP well spent.
