First game I played with Shan Hai Scrolls Cho’Gath I got three kills pre-6 in top lane and my jungler typed “that skin is doing the carrying.” Not wrong. Something about the way this version of Cho’Gath looks when he’s stacking R feast makes the whole experience feel heavier. More earned. Been running this as my main Cho skin since early season 11 and I keep coming back to it over everything else in the collection.

What Shan Hai Scrolls actually changes on Cho’Gath

So the model redesign turns Cho’Gath into this massive ink-wash painting creature. Think ancient Chinese scroll art come to life on the Rift. His body has that brushstroke texture, dark blues and golds, with calligraphy-style markings across his carapace. Looks clean even at max feast stacks when most Cho skins start looking like a blob.

The VFX are where your 1350 RP actually goes. Q rupture pulls up these ink tendrils from the ground with scroll fragments swirling around the impact zone. Genuinely hard to miss in a teamfight, which is both cool and slightly annoying because the enemy ADC can see it coming from across the lane. W scream gets a wave of ink that spreads outward. Solid visual. E spikes trail dark ink particles that read well against most terrain. Could be wrong here but I think the E auto-enhanced hits feel more satisfying with this skin than base, might just be placebo though.

R feast is the highlight. Massive ink burst when you chomp someone. The animation has this scroll-unfurling effect where calligraphy symbols flash for a split second. Worth it. In my Diamond games last season I had a Jinx flash away from my R on pure reaction because the visual telegraph is that crisp. Base voice lines, no new VO, but the skin doesnt need it when the visuals carry this hard.

Recall animation has Cho’Gath painting on a scroll with his claws. (Random aside: I’ve screenshot this recall more times than I want to admit.) Its one of those recalls that actually fits the theme instead of being random filler.

The Shan Hai Scrolls line and release context

Shan Hai Scrolls Cho’Gath dropped January 28, 2021. Middle of season 11. The Shan Hai Scrolls skinline pulled from the Shan Hai Jing, that classic Chinese mythology text about mountains and seas. Cho’Gath fits naturally as a mythological beast, more so than some other champions in the line honestly.

Terence ‘Terrylefruit’ Cantal and West Studio handled the artwork. They cooked on this one. The splash captures Cho mid-roar with the scroll aesthetic bleeding into the background. Real scroll painting energy. Permanent shop availability so you can grab it whenever.

8 chromas total. Obsidian is the one I default to, turns the whole model into this dark ink demon that reads almost like a different skin entirely. Tanzanite goes deep purple and leans into the mystical vibe harder than base. Pearl exists for people who want a lighter aesthetic but kinda feels like it undermines the whole dark mythology angle. Not gonna lie, I cycled through all eight over maybe 40 games one weekend in February and Obsidian won by a mile.

Is Shan Hai Scrolls Cho’Gath worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is a strong Epic skin. Might be the best Cho’Gath skin depending on what you value. Gentleman has the meme factor and the legendary VO. Battlecast Prime has the full rework treatment. But Shan Hai Scrolls hits this sweet spot where the theme is original, the VFX are clean, and the model actually looks good at all feast stack levels.

For Cho’Gath mains who play him top or mid, this is an easy lock-in. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The Q and R visuals alone justify it in teamfights where you need that visual clarity on your engage. If you only splitpush on Cho and never group, maybe you care less about the teamfight aesthetics, but even in lane the model just looks right.

Kinda feels like Riot put extra effort into the Shan Hai Scrolls line that January. Jhin got one too and both skins landed well. For comp players who want their Cho’Gath to look intimidating without going full mecha robot, this is the pick. Been daily driving it for five seasons now. Top pick for Cho’Gath mains, full stop.
