First time I saw Prestige K/DA Kai’Sa (2022) pop up in the Mythic Essence shop, I had to double-take. Riot already did the original Prestige K/DA Kai’Sa years ago, and now they’re back with a second pass? Honestly not gonna lie, my expectations were low. The 2018 version had its charm, gold and flashy and new at the time, but that was before Riot figured out what Prestige skins could actually look like. So when this updated edition dropped April 1, 2022, I figured it was either gonna be a lazy cash grab or a genuine improvement. Turns out it lands somewhere in the middle.
The visual rework and what it actually does
The biggest thing with this Mythic skin is the refined gold palette. Original Prestige K/DA had that heavy saturated gold that looked almost orange in certain lighting on the Rift. The 2022 version pulls it back. More champagne, less construction helmet. Subtle difference but it reads way cleaner in teamfights when you’re kiting through a messy engage.
New VFX on the abilities hit different from what the original offered. Her Q missiles have this softer golden trail that doesn’t clutter the screen as much. Been running this in Diamond for a few months after I rolled it from Mythic Essence, and the visual clarity on Icathian Rain is noticeable. You can actually track individual missiles in a packed bot lane fight. Her W feels crisper too, the void seeker beam has a warm shimmer instead of the flat gold glow from the 2018 version.
E evolution is where it gets interesting. The invisibility shimmer during Supercharge keeps the prestige gold tint, and when you pop out the other side the particles scatter clean. Not sure if it’s just me but the attack speed steroid after E feels smoother to animation cancel with. Could be placebo. Probably is. But I’ll take it.
The recall animation got a refresh too. Standard K/DA dance vibes but the particle work is sharper. Little gold notes floating around Kai’Sa during the recall, very pop-star energy. Voice lines stay base though. No VO refresh. For a Mythic tier skin thats kind of expected, Riot saves new voice packs for Legendaries and up. Still, Kai’Sa’s base VO works fine with the aesthetic.
K/DA line context and the Prestige situation
The K/DA skinline is probably Riot’s most commercially successful theme ever. Between the original set, the ALL OUT follow-up, and all the Prestige variants, they’ve milked this concept across multiple seasons. Kai’Sa specifically has two Prestige K/DA versions now, the 2018 original and this 2022 update. Pan Chengwei handled the artwork on the splash, and the composition is solid. Kai’Sa in that golden outfit against a dark stage backdrop, very music video still frame energy (random aside: my friend uses this splash as her Discord banner and I cant even be mad about it).
K/DA as a skinline works for Kai’Sa because the champion design already leans into that sleek futuristic vibe. The void suit translates naturally into a performance outfit. Compare it to something like K/DA Akali where the ninja aesthetic has to bend harder to fit the pop-star theme. Kai’Sa just… works here. The silhouette stays readable, the ability effects match the fantasy, clean execution overall.
No chromas on this one. Prestige skins generally dont get chromas since the whole point is the exclusive colorway. Fair enough.
Getting it and who it’s actually for
Real talk though. This skin sits in the vault right now. You cant just buy it outright for RP like a normal shop skin. Special pricing through the Mythic Essence rotation means you’re either saving up essence from passes and capsules or you’re getting lucky with rerolls. Last Tuesday I watched my duo partner burn through 15 skin shards trying to get this from rerolls. Did not work out for him.
The vault rotation thing is both a blessing and a curse. Makes the skin feel exclusive when you lock it in during champ select. Seen maybe 4 or 5 of these in my games all season, and I play a lot of Kai’Sa games in Diamond. Most Kai’Sa mains I run into are either on Star Guardian or the base K/DA ALL OUT. This Prestige version is rare enough that people actually notice it in the loading screen.
Might be overthinking it but I think the 2022 Prestige versions exist because Riot realized their early Prestige skins (2018-2019 era) looked rough compared to what they were putting out later. The original Prestige K/DA Kai’Sa was literally just a golden chroma of the base K/DA skin. This 2022 update actually has distinct VFX work and a new splash. Massive improvement even if the concept is the same gold-on-black aesthetic.
The honest take
Should you chase this? If you’re a Kai’Sa one-trick, absolutely. Top pick for Kai’Sa mains who want something that stands out in the loading screen without going full Legendary price. The VFX updates from the 2022 revision make it feel current instead of dated. Playing this skin, the auto attack animations flow well for cs-ing in lane and the ability particles dont distract during late-game teamfights where you need to track cooldowns.
If you’re not a Kai’Sa main, probably skip it. The vault availability means you’re spending premium currency on a champion you might play twice a month. Star Guardian Kai’Sa or Lagoon Dragon exist in the regular shop and honestly offer comparable or better visual packages for straight RP. But for the dedicated ADC players who’ve been spamming Kai’Sa since her release, grinding the Mythic Essence for this one is worth it. Season 12 drop, refined gold palette, clean VFX. Does what a Prestige skin should do without overcomplicating it. Simple upgrade – big payoff in how it feels to pilot her through a 35-minute ranked game at 2 AM when your jungler is somehow 0/6 and you’re the only win condition.
