Lunar Eclipse Aatrox

First time I saw Lunar Eclipse Aatrox load into my ranked game I thought it was a Legendary. Not even exaggerating. The model is that clean, the purple-silver armor reads so well against the Rift that I had to double check the price tag. 1350 RP. Locked it in that same night around 1 AM after a loss streak because honestly I deserved something nice.

What the Eclipse skin actually changes

The whole color palette shifts Aatrox from his usual red-black demon vibe into this celestial knight aesthetic. Silver and deep violet armor plating, crescent moon motifs across the shoulders and sword. Kinda feels like Riot took the Darkin concept and said “what if he served the moon instead.” Works better than it should.

Q sweetspots have these lunar-purple slash particles that pop off hard in teamfights. Each Q cast feels heavier with the new VFX, the ground impact zones light up in this deep indigo. W chains glow with that same eclipse energy, and when the pull connects you get a satisfying crescent flash. E dash trails lunar particles behind Aatrox. Clean stuff. Not sure if it’s just me but the R transformation feels more dramatic here than base, the wings spread with this purple burst that reads across the whole lane.

New recall animation too. Aatrox plants the sword and channels eclipse energy through it, moon imagery overhead. Short and punchy. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the voice filter from his default kit already sounds menacing enough that it doesnt matter much.

Been running this in Diamond for maybe 60 games last season. The Q indicators are slightly harder for enemies to read against certain terrain, especially around dragon pit. Not saying its pay to win but the purple blends into river shadows better than bright red. Take this with a grain of salt but I’ve landed more Q3 sweetspots on this skin than Odyssey.

The Eclipse line and release context

Lunar Eclipse Aatrox dropped April 28, 2022. Late season 12. Marie Magny and West Studio handled the artwork, and they cooked on the splash. Aatrox floating mid-air with the crescent blade, eclipse happening behind him. One of the better splash compositions for an Epic tier skin that year.

The Eclipse skinline is one of Riot’s strongest thematic sets. You’ve got Solar Eclipse Leona, Lunar Eclipse Senna, the whole celestial warfare thing. Aatrox fits the Lunar side naturally because the brooding dark knight energy already lives in his base kit. Eclipse just gives it a cosmic upgrade instead of the usual Darkin horror angle.

8 chromas total. Obsidian is my go-to, strips the purple for this dark gunmetal look that reads like an entirely different skin. Tanzanite pushes deeper into the purple direction which I think is redundant with base. Rainbow is the meme pick but honestly it looks cleaner than you’d expect in game. (Random aside: my duo partner bought every single chroma day one and only ever uses Ruby, absolute waste of RP but thats his problem.) Shop has it permanently, no vault rotation nonsense.

Is Lunar Eclipse Aatrox worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is top three Aatrox skins. Maybe top two. The VFX upgrade alone justifies the price, and the model quality punches above its tier. Mecha Aatrox exists in a different lane entirely, more mech fantasy than dark knight. Blood Moon is solid but overplayed in my Diamond games, I see maybe four or five per week. Lunar Eclipse Aatrox shows up way less which gives it that exclusivity feel even though its a permanent shop skin.

If you main Aatrox and want something that isn’t Blood Moon or Odyssey, this is the pick. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The Eclipse line carries weight and the skin earns its spot in the set. Been daily driving this over Prestige Blood Moon for two splits now and I dont see myself switching back. Only skip if you’re saving for a Legendary drop, otherwise lock it in.
