First time I saw Haunted Zyra load into a game I thought someone modded their client. The whole vibe shifts from botanical mage to straight-up horror movie plant witch, and it caught me off guard in the best way. Been running this skin on and off since season 4, mostly during October obviously, but honestly it holds up year round. Not gonna lie, something about the dead plant aesthetic just fits Zyra better than her base ever did.

What Haunted Zyra actually changes

So the big sell here is the VFX overhaul. Every plant Zyra spawns comes out looking withered and ghostly. Her Q seeds sprout these pale, skeletal flowers that look like they crawled out of a graveyard. The W passive plants have this eerie green glow that reads really well against the Rift, especially on the blue side jungle where the contrast pops.

E is where it gets good. The vine snare drags along the ground with this spectral trail, and in teamfights where you’re laying down zone control, the visual clutter actually works in your favor. Enemies have a harder time tracking exactly where the root ends. Could be wrong here but I swear I’ve landed more E catches with this skin than base, just because the animation blends into the chaos of a 5v5 around dragon pit.

Her R, Stranglethorns, erupts with these dead branches and ghostly thorns. Solid impact. The knockup zone reads clearly which is all you really need from an ult indicator. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but Karen Strassman’s original performance already carries enough menace that it doesn’t feel like a miss.

The recall animation is a nice touch. Zyra summons a ring of haunted plants around her and kind of conducts them like a horror orchestra. Short and clean. Not the flashiest recall in the game but fits the theme perfectly. (Random aside: I set this recall as my phone notification sound for a week last October and my coworkers thought I was losing it.)

The Trick-or-Treat line and where Haunted Zyra sits

Released October 29, 2013. Right on Halloween, obviously. The Trick-or-Treat skinline is one of Riot’s seasonal staples and Zyra slots into it naturally. A champion whose entire kit revolves around spawning plants getting a haunted garden makeover? Thats about as clean a concept match as you’ll find in the entire catalog.

Christian Fell painted the splash piece. The composition is strong, Zyra rising from this tangle of dead vines with jack-o-lantern plants flanking her. The color palette leans heavy into greens and purples, classic Halloween territory. Feels like a movie poster for some B-horror film about killer plants, and I mean that as a compliment.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Kind of surprising given how many skins from this era got chromas retroactively, but Haunted Zyra never picked any up. The base color scheme works well enough on its own though. The pale green and dark purple contrast does the heavy lifting without needing variants.

At 1350 RP this sits in the Epic tier. Shop has it permanently, not a vault skin, so you don’t need to wait for Halloween to grab it. Though buying it in October just feels right, you know? I picked mine up during the 2014 Harrowing event I think, maybe 2015, dont remember exactly.

Where Haunted Zyra ranks for mains

Real talk though. Zyra has some heavy competition in her skin pool now. Coven Zyra exists. Crystal Rose exists. Dragon Sorceress exists. And honestly Haunted Zyra still holds its own against all of them for different reasons.

Coven is the flashier pick, sure. More detailed, newer tech, prestige edition available. But Haunted has this understated creepiness that Coven trades away for high fantasy drama. If you’re a Zyra main who plays her as a poke support in bot lane, the Haunted VFX read cleaner in lane phase than Coven’s busier particles. Been spamming Zyra support in Diamond this split and I keep coming back to Haunted specifically for ranked because the plant hitboxes feel more intuitive to track.

Last Tuesday around 2 AM I had a game where I dropped four plants in river during a jungle invade and the enemy Kayn literally walked into every single one. The ghostly green plants blended into the river terrain just enough. Might be overthinking it but I think the skin gives you a micro-advantage in darker areas of the map.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across the full kit, a solid recall, strong thematic execution. You’re not getting new voice lines or a model that completely reinvents the champion, but for an Epic tier skin from 2013 the quality holds up. Skip it if you already own Coven and only want one Zyra skin. But if you main Zyra and rotate through skins depending on mood, Haunted is the comfort pick. The one you lock in when you just want clean visuals and zero distractions. Best seasonal Zyra skin full stop, and arguably top three in her whole lineup even now.
