Dark Star Karma

First game I played with Dark Star Karma was a support matchup against a Lulu and I remember thinking the Q looked like it was eating the lane. Not sure if it’s just me but the entire color palette on this skin shifts Karma from serene enlightenment to full cosmic horror and it works way better than it should. The dark purple and black swirling particles on her abilities feel heavy, like each spell carries actual weight behind it. Been running this as my main Karma skin since mid-2019 and havent really looked back.

VFX and the cosmic rework

For an Epic at 1350 RP, the visual package here is solid. Karma’s Q fires out this dark matter orb that trails purple-black energy across the Rift. The Mantra Q explosion specifically is where it shines. Big detonation, swirling void particles, looks threatening in a teamfight when you land it on their backline. Clean read on the hitbox too which matters when you’re trying to poke in lane.

W tether gets the cosmic treatment. Thin purple beam connecting you to the target, and the root proc has a satisfying dark burst. E shield wraps Karma in what looks like a collapsing star. Not flashy by itself but the Mantra E team shield is where the VFX budget went. Whole team gets this dark nebula aura. Played a game last Friday where I Mantra E’d into a dragon fight and my ADC asked what skin I was using. That says something.

Recall animation pulls Karma into this void singularity thing. She meditates while dark energy spirals around her. Standard voice lines, no new VO. The base Karma voice still works thematically though because the calm delivery against the apocalyptic visuals creates this contrast that I think Riot was going for.

Dark Star line and release context

Dark Star dropped June 13, 2019. Season 9 if I remember right. Zeen Chin nailed the splash, the composition has Karma floating in this void space with galaxies collapsing behind her. Strong piece.

The Dark Star skinline is one of Riot’s most consistent. Thresh, Jarvan, Orianna, Kha’Zix. Karma fits naturally here because her kit is all about energy manipulation and the cosmic void theme translates that into something darker. Kinda feels like Karma was always meant to have a Dark Star variant. The line has this identity of champions consumed by or wielding cosmic destruction, and support Karma with void-eating abilities just reads correctly.

8 chromas total. Ruby goes full red shift, aggressive look. Sapphire turns the whole palette deep blue which reads cleaner against the green of Summoner’s Rift in my opinion. Meteorite has this earthy brown tone that’s unique but honestly I’m not sold on it. (Random aside: Pearl chroma is my phone lock screen because the white cosmic aesthetic goes hard.) Most of the chromas change the particle tinting slightly which is more than some Epic chromas deliver.

Should you buy Dark Star Karma?

Real verdict: if you play Karma support or mid with any regularity this is a top two skin for her. Maybe top one depending on how you feel about Odyssey Karma. The VFX overhaul earns the 1350 RP. Every ability feels distinct from base and the dark cosmic theme gives Karma an edge she doesnt normally carry.

For Karma mains specifically, the Mantra abilities all look distinct enough from their base versions that you get clear visual feedback on empowered casts. That matters in Diamond games where split-second reads on whether Karma used Mantra Q or regular Q can change how you position. Been spamming this in ranked for maybe 40 games this season and the skin just performs. Shop has it permanently so no rush, but 1350 RP feels fair for what you get.

Skip it if you only play Karma once a month. But if she’s in your regular rotation, this is the one. Could be wrong here but I think Dark Star edges out every other Karma skin on pure VFX quality. The cosmic void fantasy is strong here and Riot executed it without overloading the visual noise. S-tier Karma cosmetic.
