Captain Volibear

Been running Captain Volibear on and off since season 5 and honestly this is one of those skins that just works without trying too hard. First time I saw it in champ select I thought someone was trolling with a custom skin. Nope. Riot actually put a police captain hat on the bear. Something about the absurdity of it made me lock it in immediately for a ranked game last Thursday around midnight.

What actually changes on Captain Volibear

So this is a Standard tier skin at 750 RP, and for that price point you get a full model swap. Volibear looks like he walked straight out of a cop movie. The hat, the badge, the whole uniform concept. Could be wrong here but I think the shoulder pads have a slight metallic sheen that the base skin doesnt have. The blue and gold color scheme reads really clean on the Rift.

New VFX come with this one which is solid for a 750 RP skin. Not every skin at this price gets that treatment. His abilities have a slightly different particle color that leans into the blue authority vibe. Nothing crazy like a full Legendary overhaul but enough that you notice it in teamfights. Voice lines stay base, no changes there. David Sobolov still doing his thing on the VO.

No new recall animation either. You get the standard Volibear recall which is fine. Real talk though, for 750 RP I’m not expecting a custom recall. The model change alone carries it. Playing this skin, the auto attacks feel slightly different just because of the visual weight of the uniform. Placebo? Probably. But I swear my cs was better that one weekend I spammed maybe 15 games with it.

The Cops and Robbers line and release context

Captain Volibear dropped November 28, 2014. Part of the Cops and Robbers skinline which is one of Riot’s more comedic theme sets. The whole concept is champions cosplaying as law enforcement or criminals. Volibear got the captain rank which fits his whole “charge in and maul everyone” playstyle. (Random aside: imagine Volibear writing traffic tickets between ganking bot lane.)

No splash artist credited in the data for this one. The splash itself is decent for 2014 standards. Volibear standing there looking authoritative with the hat tilted slightly. Season 4 or 5 era splashes have a certain vibe to them that I kinda miss.

Zero chromas on Captain Volibear. What you see is what you get. Shop has it permanently so no vault nonsense, no loot gambling. Just 750 RP and you’re done.

Should you pick up Captain Volibear?

Verdict time. Not gonna lie, this sits in a weird spot. Volibear has better skins now. Duality Dragon exists. Inkshadow exists. Spirit Blossom Springs exists. But Captain Volibear has something those don’t: pure comedy value. When you’re in a Diamond lobby and the enemy jungle sees a police bear running at them from river, there’s a psychological edge there. Might be overthinking it but I think the tilt factor is real.

750 RP feels fair for what you get. The model swap is clean, the VFX additions are a nice bonus at this price, and the Cops and Robbers theme gives it personality. Skip this if you want flashy particles and custom voice lines. Pick it up if you main Volibear and want something in your rotation thats just fun. I keep coming back to this one between the more expensive options because sometimes you just want to run someone down as a bear in a hat. Simple change – huge impact on the vibe. For Volibear one-tricks who have room in the collection, Captain Volibear earns its slot.
