Battle Bear Illaoi

First game I played with Battle Bear Illaoi, my whole team pinged my skin in champ select. Not sure if it’s just me but there’s something about Illaoi swinging around a giant teddy bear that immediately shifts the vibe of a ranked lobby. Locked this in around 1 AM on release night and honestly the skin hit harder than I expected for 1350 RP.

What Riot actually changed here

So the whole Anima Squad concept turns champions into these mech-pilot action hero types, and Illaoi fits that energy perfectly. She’s already this massive presence in lane, and Battle Bear Illaoi leans into it with a full tactical bear suit theme. The tentacles are the star. They come out looking like stylized bear claws with pink and purple energy trails, and when you proc your passive in a teamfight the whole screen lights up.

Q slam feels chunky. The ground effect has this cute-but-aggressive bear paw stamp that reads well against the Rift. W leap gets new particles too, the impact zone glows with that Anima Squad pink-purple palette. E is where it gets interesting – the spirit pull animation has bear-themed VFX wrapping around the target, and in my Diamond games people genuinely react differently to it. Might be overthinking it but the visual reads faster than base Illaoi E.

R is solid. Tentacles slam down with enhanced effects and theres bear imagery in the ground cracks. Played maybe 40 games with this skin through the end of season 14 and the ult VFX never got old. The recall animation is new too, Illaoi does this whole sequence with her bear companion. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the skin doesnt need it.

Anima Squad and the context

Battle Bear Illaoi dropped July 31, 2024. Part of the Anima Squad line, which is one of Riot’s more fun thematic sets. The skinline started with the whole “champions as anime mecha fighters” concept and Illaoi joining it was a solid pick. She fits the heavy-hitter archetype naturally.

Yuyu Wong and Kudos Productions handled the splash art. They captured this aggressive pose with Illaoi mid-swing, bear companion front and center. Portfolio piece for sure. (Random aside: the splash cropped as a Discord banner goes hard.)

9 chromas available. Obsidian is my go-to because the dark palette makes the bear claws look menacing instead of cute, which changes the whole feel in lane. Nightwire has this orange and blue contrast that pops during teamfights. Pearl is clean if you want the softer look but honestly I keep coming back to Obsidian. Who should grab Battle Bear Illaoi

Real verdict: this is a strong Epic tier skin for Illaoi mains. Five Illaoi skins total now and Battle Bear sits comfortably in the top two. The VFX work carries it. Cosmic Invoker is the main competition and that one leans more serious, so it comes down to whether you want your tentacle god to feel cosmic or to feel like an action movie character with a giant bear.

Been running this as my main Illaoi skin since it dropped. In ranked specifically, the tentacle VFX clarity is better than base, which matters when you’re trying to zone three people off dragon pit. Had a game last week where I ulted into a 4-man dive bot lane and the bear paw slams were genuinely distracting for the enemy team. Could be coping but I think the visual noise gives you a slight edge in chaotic fights.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across all abilities, solid recall, nine chromas if you want variety. Skip it if you already own Cosmic Invoker and dont play Illaoi regularly. But for anyone who mains her or even has her in the top lane rotation for counterpick spots, this is worth the pickup. The Anima Squad theme suits Illaoi better than it has any right to.
