Arcana Tahm Kench

First time I saw Arcana Tahm Kench load in, I thought someone modded their client. The whole tarot card aesthetic on a giant catfish demon just works in a way I wasnt expecting. Not gonna lie, I slept on this skin for months after release before a buddy in my ranked duo convinced me to try it. Glad he did.

The tarot catfish visual overhaul

Arcana Tahm Kench turns the River King into something straight out of a fortune teller’s nightmare. Gold and deep crimson replace his usual swamp colors. His tongue has this glowing arcane energy that reads really clean on the Rift, especially when you’re landing Q poke in lane. The whole model feels regal in a way that base Tahm Kench never manages.

New VFX across the board. His Q tongue lash trails golden particles that actually help with visual clarity, which matters when you’re trying to peel for your ADC in a messy teamfight. W is where it gets interesting – the Abyssal Dive leaves tarot card imagery on the ground. Subtle touch but it makes engages feel more impactful. Honestly the R channel animation with the arcane circle forming underneath him might be my favorite part. Clean read for your team, clean read for the enemy. Good design.

New recall animation too. Tahm Kench deals tarot cards and eats them. Fits the theme perfectly. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the skin filter on his existing lines would have been a nice addition. Missed opportunity there I think.

(Random aside: I use the recall spam to tilt enemy laners when I’m zoning them off cs. Works more often than it should.)

Arcana lineup and the details

Released May 13, 2021. Season 11 was peak skin production from Riot and it shows. West Studio handled the artwork, they captured something theatrical about Tahm Kench that the base splash never quite manages.

The Arcana skinline is one of Riot’s more underrated themes. Camille, Lucian, Xerath all got Arcana treatments and they’re consistently solid. Tahm Kench fits the fortune-dealer fantasy naturally – he’s already a demon who makes deals, slapping tarot imagery on him is almost too obvious. But obvious can work when the execution is there.

8 chromas total. Obsidian is the one I keep coming back to, turns the gold accents dark and moody which fits the occult vibe harder than base. Amethyst swaps into purple tones that read like a mystic variant. Pearl exists if you want the clean white look but kinda feels like it loses the sinister edge that makes this skin work. The rest are fine but those two carry the chroma lineup for me.

This Epic sits at 1350 RP. Shop has it, permanent availability. Been there since launch, not going anywhere.

Playing Arcana Tahm Kench in ranked

Took this into Diamond games for maybe 40 or 50 matches last season. Tahm Kench support with Arcana just feels right. Could be wrong here but the Q particles on this skin genuinely seem easier to track than base, which helps when you’re threading tongue lashes through minion waves to catch the enemy bot lane off guard.

Had a game last Wednesday where I dove their Jinx under tower at level 3 with this skin on. She flashed into my W and I walked out with the kill. The Arcana VFX on Devour looked sick with the golden swirl. Small thing but those moments stick with you.

One thing I notice – the model is slightly bulkier looking than default Tahm Kench, or at least it feels that way. Might be overthinking it but in lane it gives this psychological presence, like you’re taking up more space. Good for a champion whose whole identity is being an immovable wall for the backline.

Been maining Tahm Kench with this skin on and off since season 12. The W engage into R for a teamfight flank is satisfying with any skin but Arcana adds that extra flair. Spammed this in a comp with Kog’Maw ADC where my only job was peel and Devour saves. The golden shield particles popping off every fight made it feel like I was actually doing something flashy for once.

Should you buy Arcana Tahm Kench?

Real verdict: 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX, new recall, solid model changes. No new voice lines holds it back from being exceptional but thats the standard Epic package and Arcana Tahm Kench delivers above average within that tier.

If you main Tahm Kench this is arguably the best skin he has. Coin Emperor is fun but more meme than quality. High Noon is solid competition but the Arcana theme just fits his character better. The fortune dealer aesthetic on a deal-making demon – it writes itself.

Skip it if you only play Tahm Kench once every three months in ARAM. Worth 1350 RP if you main the River King though. Top pick for Tahm Kench mains who want something that looks premium without going overboard. The Obsidian chroma specifically elevates it another tier. Grab that bundle if you can.
