First time I saw Duality Dragon Volibear load in, my immediate reaction was just confusion. Good confusion. The kind where you sit there for a second and go “wait, that’s Volibear?” because the silhouette reads so differently from base. Been running this skin since it dropped in October 2021 and I think it might be the cleanest Epic he has. Not gonna lie, I expected it to feel gimmicky with the whole dragon aesthetic slapped onto a bear god, but Riot pulled it off.
What the skin actually changes
The model rework here is significant for a 1350 RP skin. Volibear gets this armored draconic look with scales running down his limbs and a headpiece that makes him look like he crawled out of some Ionian myth. The color palette shifts to deep purples and golds, which honestly pops hard against Summoner’s Rift green. Clean contrast.
VFX got a full pass. His Q charge-up leaves these trailing dragon energy particles, and the W bite has a satisfying purple crunch effect. Kinda feels like the E ground slam is where they put the most work though – the lightning circle gets replaced with this draconic sigil that reads super clearly in teamfights. Last Tuesday I was peeling for my ADC and the E zone was so visible that even my Jinx actually positioned around it for once. Rare event.
The R is where it gets good. Volibear’s ult slam down creates this massive dragon-themed impact zone with scales radiating outward. Been spamming this in Diamond and every time I ult into a dive, the VFX just command attention. The recall animation is new too – he channels this draconic energy and it looks genuinely intimidating. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but honestly the base Volibear voice is already threatening enough that it doesnt hurt the fantasy.
The Dragonmancers line and release context
Duality Dragon Volibear dropped October 21, 2021. Part of the Dragonmancers skinline, which is one of Riot’s more interesting thematic sets. The duality concept specifically plays on the idea of two opposing dragon forces, and Volibear fits the aggressive half naturally.
Felipe Martini and West Studio handled the artwork. They captured something specific here – Volibear mid-transformation, scales emerging from fur, this tension between beast and dragon. Strong splash. (Random aside: I had this as my Discord avatar for like three months straight before my duo told me to change it.)
The Dragonmancers line has hits and misses across the roster but Duality Dragon Volibear sits comfortably in the upper tier. Could be wrong here but I think the reason it works is that Volibear’s base design already has that mythological weight to it, so draping him in dragon motifs feels earned rather than forced. Compare that to some of the other Dragonmancer skins where the champion just looks like they’re wearing a dragon costume.
Chromas breakdown
9 chromas total. That’s a lot of options. Emberclaw is the standout for me – dark base with deep red accents that makes him look like he’s been walking through volcanic ash. Obsidian goes full dark mode and reads almost like a different skin entirely in lane. Been maining Volibear with the Obsidian variant this season and the purple-to-black shift just hits different at night when you’re grinding ranked around 1 AM.
Sapphire is worth mentioning too because the blue tones give him this ice dragon vibe that almost crosses into Freljord territory. Ruby exists. It’s fine. The rest – Citrine, Rose Quartz, Aquamarine, Tanzanite, Emerald – are solid color swaps but none of them grabbed me the way Emberclaw did. Maybe just my experience but I think most Volibear mains gravitate toward the darker chromas anyway.
Should you buy it?
Real verdict: Duality Dragon Volibear earns its 1350 RP. The VFX overhaul is substantial, the model change is dramatic enough to feel fresh every game, and the Dragonmancers thematic works better on Volibear than on half the champions in the line. Shop has it, permanent availability.
If you’re a Volibear one-trick deciding between this and Thousand-Pierced Bear, that’s actually a tough call because they serve different fantasies. Thousand-Pierced goes full eldritch horror while Duality Dragon leans into the mythic warrior angle. For jungle clear specifically the VFX on Duality Dragon read cleaner, which matters when you’re tracking ability cooldowns in fast skirmishes. Season 11 I think this dropped, or early season 12 – either way it’s aged well. Top pick for Volibear mains who want presence without going Legendary price. 1350 RP well spent for mains, no question.
