First time I saw Super Galaxy Gnar load in, I thought someone modded a mecha anime into my ranked game. Sat there in champ select staring at the splash for a solid ten seconds. The whole vibe is Gurren Lagann meets yordle and honestly thats exactly the kind of ridiculous energy Gnar deserves. Been running this skin on and off since it dropped in 2017 and it still holds up surprisingly well for an Epic.

What Super Galaxy Gnar actually brings to the table

So the big thing here is the VFX overhaul. Mini Gnar’s boomerang Q gets this bright energy trail that reads clean against every Rift background. Pink and blue neon. You know what surprised me? The E bounce particles. When you hop off a minion or a champion, there’s this burst of energy rings that feel way more satisfying than base. Makes the engage pattern in lane feel snappier even though nothing mechanically changed.

Mega Gnar is where it gets interesting. The W stun and R throw both have these heavy impact effects with the Super Galaxy color palette. Purple explosions, energy waves. When you ult three people into a wall during a teamfight the screen just lights up. Played maybe 40 games with this skin last season in Diamond and the Mega form R never got old visually.

The recall animation is the highlight for me. Mini Gnar hops into this little mecha pod thing. Classic Super Galaxy energy. (Random aside: my duo partner thought it was a Transformers reference and I had to explain the whole Super Galaxy skinline to him at like 1 AM on a Tuesday.) Mega Gnar’s recall is equally good, more of a power-up sequence. Both feel distinct which matters for a champion that swaps forms constantly.

Voice lines stay base though. No new VO. For 1350 RP that’s expected, most Epics skip new voice work. The base Gnar voice is charming enough that it doesnt really hurt the skin. Still babbles in his yordle language, still screams when he goes Mega. Works fine.

The Super Galaxy line and where Gnar fits

Super Galaxy dropped Gnar’s version on October 16, 2017. Mid-season 7. The skinline already had Rumble, Shyvana, Fizz, Kindred, and others by that point. Gnar slots in naturally because the whole mecha-pilot fantasy pairs well with a champion who literally transforms. Kinda feels like Riot designed the concept around that transformation gimmick.

Rudy Siswanto nailed the splash. Mini Gnar front and center in this cockpit pose with Mega Gnar looming behind him. The composition sells the dual nature of the champion perfectly. One of the better Super Galaxy splashes in the entire line if you ask me.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which is a shame because I think an Obsidian or dark variant would look incredible with the neon VFX. But Riot never circled back to add any. Not sure if it’s just me but the skin feels like it got released and then forgotten about. No chromas, no updates, just sitting there.

Should you lock in Super Galaxy Gnar for 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is a solid mid-tier Epic. Not the best Gnar skin. Not the worst. The VFX carry it hard. If you’re a Gnar main who plays a lot of teamfight comps and wants your Mega R to look like it belongs in an anime, this is your pick. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get.

Where it falls short is the lack of new voice lines and no chromas to customize. Astronaut Gnar and Elderwood Gnar both compete in the same price bracket and offer different aesthetics. Astronaut leans quirky, Elderwood leans fantasy. Super Galaxy Gnar leans full mecha anime. Depends on your taste.

Could be wrong here but I think this skin peaks in ARAM and teamfight-heavy games where Mega Gnar gets to proc his full combo on multiple targets. The VFX just pop harder when there’s chaos on screen. In a splitpush lane where you’re mostly in Mini form poking with Q, the skin is fine but nothing special. Spammed this in Diamond during a Gnar phase back in season 9 I think, and the engage plays are where the skin earns its price tag. Shop has it permanently so no rush, but if you main Gnar and want something flashy for your ult-into-W combos in late-game fights, Super Galaxy delivers. Skip it if you already own Astronaut though, that one edges it out overall.
