First time I saw this skin pop up in champ select I thought someone was flexing a chroma. Nope. Prestige Valiant Sword Riven is its own thing entirely, and after locking it in for a solid stretch of ranked games last season, I have thoughts. Lots of them.

The golden treatment and what it actually changes

So the base Valiant Sword already looked clean. Prestige takes that and dips everything in white and gold. The blade, the armor plating, the flowing cloth elements. All of it shifts to this almost celestial palette that reads way differently on the Rift than the original blue tones. Not gonna lie, it looks expensive. Which I guess is the point.

VFX got the Prestige pass too. Your Q combo leaves these gold slash trails that are genuinely satisfying to watch mid-combo. The third Q knockup has this burst of golden particles that pops hard in teamfights. W stun radiates outward with warm light instead of the cooler tones from base Valiant Sword. E shield wraps Riven in this shimmering gold barrier that honestly makes it slightly harder to track the exact shield timing visually, which could be a tiny advantage in lane if your opponent isnt paying close attention.

R activation is where it gets real. Blade extends with this luminous edge effect and Wind Slash fires off with golden energy that cuts across the screen. Been running this in Diamond for a while now and the ult VFX still hits different every time. Recall animation stays the same choreography as Valiant Sword but the color shift makes it feel more ceremonial. Like Riven earned something.

Voice lines stay base though. No VO refresh. For a Prestige skin thats expected, but worth mentioning if you were hoping for new lines.

Immortal Journey prestige and the context around it

Released September 26, 2019. Late season 9. This was during the period where Riot was still figuring out how Prestige skins should work, and honestly Prestige Valiant Sword Riven landed in a better spot than some of the earlier attempts. The Immortal Journey skinline suits Riven naturally. Wuxia warrior fantasy, flowing martial arts aesthetic. Riven’s kit animations already have that sword dance quality so the theme doesn’t fight the champion design at all.

Zuoan Dong and Kudos Productions handled the splash art. They captured this ascending moment, Riven bathed in golden light with the blade raised. Clean composition. (Random aside: I had this splash as my desktop background for like three months straight in 2020.)

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which makes sense because Prestige skins ARE the variant. You’re not getting additional color options on top of the golden rework. The skin itself is the flex.

Mythic tier pricing here. Special acquisition, not a standard RP purchase. Could be wrong here but I think the availability rotated through Mythic Essence at some point. Shop has it through the Mythic system now. Availability is listed as available so you can grab it, just not through the regular store flow like a 1350 skin.

How it feels in actual games

Played maybe 150 games with this across two seasons. The gold VFX on Q combo is readable enough that it doesnt mess with your muscle memory. Some Prestige skins have particles that feel slightly off-tempo visually compared to the actual hitbox timing. Not the case here. Fast combo, animation cancel, the VFX tracks correctly.

Real talk though, in a messy 5v5 around dragon pit the golden particles can blend into certain terrain lighting. Had a game last February where my Kayn jungler pinged me for missing a Flash W engage and honestly the VFX blended into the river texture for a split second. Might be overthinking it but the blue VFX from base Valiant Sword reads cleaner in bright areas of the map.

Splitpush and lane phase though? Perfect. The gold pops against the green of top lane bushes and minion waves. Pre-6 trading patterns look crisp. Your opponent sees every Q slash coming in high contrast. Intimidation factor is real when you’re zoning someone off cs with golden blade swings.

The honest take on Prestige Valiant Sword Riven

Should you chase this? If you main Riven and you already have the Mythic Essence sitting around, absolutely. Top pick for Riven mains who want something that stands out without going full anime like Spirit Blossom or full sci-fi like Pulsefire. The Immortal Journey aesthetic is timeless in a way that some seasonal skins aren’t.

If you’re choosing between this and regular Valiant Sword, the Prestige version wins on VFX clarity in most scenarios. The gold is just more distinct than the blue in typical game lighting. Spammed this in Diamond soloqueue and I keep coming back to it over Battle Bunny Prime and Broken Covenant.

My one complaint: the gold can look slightly washed out on lower graphics settings. Buddy of mine plays on medium and says it loses some of the shimmer detail that makes it special. On high settings though, S-tier Riven cosmetic. One of those skins where the Prestige treatment actually elevated the base design instead of just recoloring it gold and calling it a day. Riot got this one right, season 9 or not.
