Justicar Aatrox

First time I locked in Justicar Aatrox was back in season 3, right after his release. Honestly not gonna lie, the golden angelic look caught me off guard. Aatrox in base form screams war demon, blood and rage, all that. Then Riot drops this holy warrior version and suddenly he looks like he belongs in a cathedral mosaic instead of the Rift. Took this into ranked for maybe 15 games that first week and the visual shift alone made laning feel different.

The golden treatment on Aatrox

Justicar flips Aatrox’s entire color identity. Gone is the dark red and black. Instead you get white armor plating, gold trim, and these bright amber wings that pop hard against Summoner’s Rift terrain. The VFX swap is what sells it though. His Q comes down with this golden light trail instead of the usual crimson slash. W procs read cleaner too, the heal and damage toggle both shift to a warm gold palette that honestly helps with gameplay clarity in teamfights.

E sends out a wave of light instead of shadow. Simple change – huge impact. You know what surprised me? The recall animation. Aatrox kneels and raises his blade like some kind of paladin ritual. For a 975 RP Standard tier skin released in 2013, thats pretty generous. No new voice lines, voice stays default, but Ramon Tikaram’s base VO still carries weight so I dont mind.

Not sure if it’s just me but the auto attack animations feel slightly crisper with the lighter color scheme. Probably placebo. Still, diving the backline with golden wings feels appropriately dramatic in late-game fights. Been running this in Diamond when I want Aatrox to feel less edgy and more righteous.

Justicar line and release context

Justicar Aatrox dropped June 12, 2013. Early days for the champion, basically his launch skin. Pan Chengwei nailed the splash, the composition has Aatrox descending from the sky with this divine aura that reads more like Kayle’s faction than anything from the Darkin. The Justicar skinline is small, just Aatrox and Syndra if I remember right (season 3 I think or maybe early 4 dont remember exactly when Syndra got hers).

The line explores this “what if the Darkin were holy instead of corrupted” concept. Kinda feels like Riot tested the waters with it and moved on. No chromas available for this one, which is a shame because a silver or blue variant would go hard. 975 RP puts it at the top end of Standard pricing. Shop has it, permanent availability, so no vault anxiety.

Should you pick up Justicar Aatrox?

Real verdict: for Aatrox mains who want variety, Justicar fills a niche nothing else does. Every other Aatrox skin leans dark. Blood Moon, Odyssey, Lunar Eclipse, all moody and aggressive. Justicar is the only light-themed option and it executes cleanly for its age. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX, recall animation, full model overhaul.

Where it falls short is the post-rework fit. Aatrox got completely rebuilt and Justicar’s golden VFX on the new Q sweetspots can feel a bit washed out compared to newer skins. Played a game last Tuesday where my Kayn jungle kept pinging my character thinking I was an ally Kayle from the minimap. That golden silhouette confuses people sometimes. Worth 975 if you main Aatrox and want the angelic fantasy. Skip it if you already own Lunar Eclipse, that one covers the premium lane better. But for a season 3 Standard skin still sitting in the shop? Solid pickup. Been in my rotation for years and I keep coming back to it between newer releases.
