First game I played with Inkshadow Master Yi was around 1 AM on a Tuesday, fresh off the patch drop. Locked in, loaded up, and the splash alone had me sold before minions spawned. Not gonna lie, I’ve been a Master Yi player since season 5 and this skin immediately felt different from anything Riot had done with him before. The ink brush aesthetic just works on a swordsman. Clean lines, flowing strokes, every auto attack feels like calligraphy on the Rift.
How Inkshadow changes Master Yi’s kit
This is a full Legendary. New model, new animations, new VFX on every ability, new voice lines from Greg Chun, new recall. The whole package. Worth breaking down ability by ability because Riot actually put thought into each one.
Q – Alpha Strike leaves ink splatter trails on each target. The particles dissolve like wet paint on paper. Looks incredible in teamfights when you’re bouncing through the backline and leaving these brushstroke marks everywhere. Kinda feels like the VFX team studied actual sumi-e painting for the references.
W – Meditate gets this calming ink wash effect. Master Yi sits in this circle of flowing ink, and the heal ticks have these subtle brush flourishes. Used this to bait a Zed ult in my Diamond promos last season and the visual timing actually helped me feel the damage reduction window better. Could be wrong here but it feels slightly more readable than base.
E – Wuju Style activation wraps the blade in ink energy. The true damage autos leave these sharp black-and-gold streaks. Simple change – huge impact on how satisfying each hit feels. Been running this in ranked and the E activation sound alone is crispy.
R – Highlander is where it peaks. The movement trail becomes this flowing ink ribbon behind Master Yi, and the attack speed buff makes the whole character blur into brushstrokes. Diving their ADC with ult active looks like a painting coming to life. Three things stood out: the trail particles, the sound design on activation, and how the model subtly shifts posture during ult.
The recall animation deserves its own mention. Master Yi paints a symbol in the air with his blade, and the ink forms into a portal. Genuinely one of the better recall animations in the game. (Random aside: I’ve let the recall animation play out fully even when I should have been moving to dragon pit more times than I want to admit.)
The Inkshadow line and release context
Inkshadow dropped May 3, 2023. Late season 13. The Inkshadow skinline came in as one of those thematic batches Riot does, and Master Yi got the Legendary treatment while others in the line got Epic tier. West Studio nailed the splash, capturing this mid-stride pose with ink particles flowing off the blade.
The Inkshadow theme pulls from East Asian ink painting traditions. Riot had been doing well with these cultural aesthetics, and the line sits comfortably next to Spirit Blossom as one of their stronger thematic collections. Master Yi fits naturally given his existing lore connections to Ionia.
6 chromas total. Tanzanite is my go-to, the deep purple ink effect against the dark model looks menacing in lane. Inked chroma does something interesting with a teal-green palette that reads almost ethereal. Ruby exists for the people who put Ruby on everything, and honestly its fine for what it is. Rest of them are solid but those two carry the set for me.
Voice lines are completely new. Greg Chun brings a more contemplative, almost philosophical tone to Master Yi here. The VO references ink, creation, the act of painting through combat. Feels like a different character interpretation rather than just “Master Yi but edgy.” Maybe just my experience but the kill lines hit harder than any other Yi skin. Pre-6 he has these calm observations, post-6 the intensity shifts. Good design.
Is Inkshadow Master Yi worth 1820 RP?
Straight talk: this is the Master Yi skin if you can only own one. Full Legendary price, earns it. 1820 RP gets you a complete reimagining of the champion’s visual and audio identity. Spammed this in Diamond for maybe 40 games after release and never felt the urge to rotate back to Cosmic Blade or Eternal Sword.
The competition in Master Yi’s skin catalog is decent. Spirit Blossom is good, PROJECT is flashy, Eternal Sword has its fans. But Inkshadow operates on a different level because of the complete VO overhaul and how cohesive the ink theme is across every ability. You know what surprised me? The auto attack sounds. They have this subtle paper-tearing quality that makes jungle clear oddly satisfying.
If you’re a Master Yi one-trick or even someone who picks him when autofilled jungle, this skin transforms the experience. The VFX clarity is actually decent for competitive play too. Some Legendary skins sacrifice readability for spectacle but the ink effects here are distinct without being noisy. Played maybe 200 games with this across two seasons now and I keep coming back.
Only real criticism: the base chroma color scheme is slightly muted in certain map lighting. River fights specifically can make the ink effects blend into the terrain a bit. Tanzanite chroma fixes this completely though. Shop has it, permanent availability, no vault waiting required. Worth 1820 RP if you main Master Yi, and honestly worth considering even if you dont. Season 13 Legendary done right.
