DRX Maokai

Not gonna lie, when DRX won Worlds 2022 I didnt expect Maokai to be one of the picks. But Pyosik’s jungle Maokai was a legit part of that run, and seeing the tree get a Worlds skin felt right. Played a dozen games with this the week it dropped and the DRX branding on a champion this old hits different in the best way.

How DRX Maokai actually looks in game

The model gets the full DRX treatment. White and blue color scheme across the entire body, with the org’s logo worked into the bark texture on his chest. Maokai’s branches shift to a cleaner crystalline blue that reads well against the Rift, especially in river fights around dragon pit. The saplings from E got a full visual overhaul. Little guys.

VFX changes are solid for an Epic tier skin. Q slam sends out a blue shockwave with DRX particle trails. W root animation has this clean blue burst when you dive onto a target. E saplings carry the blue-white theme and honestly they look better than most of his older legendary-adjacent skins. R is where it pops hardest: the advancing root wall has DRX energy running through it, blue lightning crackling as it moves forward. Caught their Jinx with it last Tuesday in a late-game teamfight and the visual payoff was chef’s kiss.

Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Standard for Worlds skins at this price point. The recall animation is custom though. Maokai plants the DRX banner and does this victory pose that references the team’s championship moment. Quick and clean, no filler.

The Worlds 2022 line and release context

DRX Maokai dropped June 1, 2023 as part of the World Champions: 2022 set. Late into season 13. The whole DRX lineup was stacked. Caitlyn, Akali, Aatrox, Kindred, and Maokai rounding it out for jungle. Horace ‘Hozure’ Hsu nailed the splash, capturing this ancient tree channeling competitive energy through blue crystal veins. Portfolio piece for sure.

The World Champions 2022 skinline carries a specific weight because of how unlikely that DRX run was. They reverse swept GenG in quarters, took down EDG, then beat T1 in one of the most insane finals in League history. (Random aside: I rewatched game 5 of that series maybe four times and still get chills from it.) So every skin in this line feels earned in a way that some Worlds skins dont.

One Elite chroma available. Gold and blue colorway that leans into the championship trophy aesthetic. Might be overthinking it but the gold variant actually reads cleaner in teamfights because the contrast is sharper. Worth picking up if you grab the bundle.

Legacy vault skin, so you cant just walk into the shop any day and buy it. Hextech only these days unless Riot brings the Worlds skins back for a limited event window. Keep that in mind if you’re thinking about it.

Is DRX Maokai worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: for Maokai mains this is a top three skin easy. The competition is Astronaut and Meowkai, and DRX beats both on VFX clarity. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New particles on every ability, custom recall, clean model work. Been running this as my go-to Maokai skin since season 13 and I keep coming back even after trying Astronaut for a stretch.

The esports connection gives it personality that pure fantasy skins cant match. You lock in DRX Maokai and there’s a story behind it. Kinda feels like wearing a jersey. If you play Maokai in jungle or support and you care about VFX at all, this is the pick. Skip it if you have zero connection to competitive League or DRX specifically, because the base color scheme is niche. But for anyone who watched that Worlds run and plays the tree? S-tier Maokai cosmetic.

The only real downside is availability. Being Legacy means you might wait months for a chance to grab it. Seen maybe two of these in my Diamond games all season, which honestly makes it feel more special when you do run it. That scarcity factor works in its favor if you already own it.
