First time I saw Deep Sea Kog’Maw load in, I thought someone modded their client. The little dude looks like he crawled out of a deep ocean trench and decided ranked was more fun than eating fish. Been running this skin on and off since maybe season 4, and it still holds up way better than a 2011 release has any right to.

What Deep Sea Kog’Maw actually changes

So the model rework here turns Kog’Maw into this bioluminescent anglerfish creature. Creepy lure dangling from his head, dark teal body with lighter underbelly markings. Honestly not gonna lie, the silhouette reads completely different from base Kog’Maw. In lane you look like a threat instead of a purple caterpillar thing.

The VFX got some love too. His Q shoots out with this murky aquatic trail, and the W range indicator has that deep water tint to it. R artillery drops feel heavier visually, like depth charges. Not groundbreaking by 2024 standards but for a 975 RP Standard tier skin from over a decade ago, there’s real effort here. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is expected at this price point.

Where it gets interesting is the passive. When Kog’Maw dies and does his little suicide run, the deep sea theme makes it feel more menacing. Played maybe 40 games with this last month in Diamond and I swear people panic flash the passive more than with base skin. Could be wrong here but the darker color scheme might just be harder to track in teamfights around dragon pit specifically.

The Forgotten Depths line and some history

Deep Sea Kog’Maw dropped September 19, 2011. Season 1 era. Wild times. Kienan ‘Knockwurst’ Lafferty handled the artwork, and the splash still goes hard. Kog’Maw emerging from black water with that angler light glowing, its one of the better older splashes in the game.

Part of the Forgotten Depths skinline, which is this underwater horror collection Riot put together. The line doesnt get much attention anymore but it had a clear vision. Deep sea creatures corrupted and hostile. Kog’Maw fits perfectly because his base design already has that Void creature energy, and translating that into an ocean predator just works.

Legacy vault skin, so you cant just grab it whenever. Gotta wait for the vault to open or get lucky with Hextech crafting. 975 RP when it shows up. (Random aside: I got mine from a reroll back in season 9 I think, felt like winning the lottery at 2 AM on a Tuesday.)

Should you care about Deep Sea Kog’Maw?

Real verdict: if you main Kog’Maw as your ADC pick, this is a solid pickup whenever Legacy rotation comes around. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX changes on Q and R give it personality that cheaper Kog’Maw skins just dont have.

That said, Kog’Maw has stronger options now. Battlecast and Hextech both outclass it in raw visual quality. But there’s something about the deep sea aesthetic that hits different in late-game teamfights when you’re shredding the backline with W active. The dark color palette keeps the screen clean, no flashy particle noise messing with your cs focus.

Skip it if you already own Battlecast or Bee’Maw. But for collectors and Kog’Maw one-tricks who want every skin in the vault rotation, Deep Sea Kog’Maw earns its spot. Not the best Kog’Maw skin full stop, but a strong piece of Riot’s early creative era that still plays well on the Rift. Sits in the Legacy pool waiting for you.
