Dark Star Sylas

First game I loaded into with Dark Star Sylas, my jungler typed “what skin is that” before minions even spawned. Thats how you know Riot did something right. The whole model radiates this collapsed-star energy, purple and black swirling through Sylas like he absorbed a whole galaxy and forgot to let go. Been running this in Diamond since it dropped October 2024 and I still catch details I missed the first hundred games.

How Dark Star Sylas plays different

Full Legendary treatment here. New voice lines, new VFX on every ability, new recall animation. The whole package. Fergus O’Donnell voices this version of Sylas and the delivery hits harder than base. There’s this cosmic detachment in the VO, like Sylas stopped caring about Demacia entirely and just wants to consume stars. Real talk though, the voice lines during ult steals are where it shines. Stealing a Lux ult with this skin on feels like ripping a supernova out of someone’s hands.

Q sends out these dark matter chains that split with a satisfying crack. The second hit leaves a brief void tear on the ground. W is where it gets interesting visually. The heal animation pulls in these swirling particles like a miniature black hole forming around Sylas. Not gonna lie, I’ve had teammates ping my W thinking I used a different ability because the VFX reads so differently from base.

E chain throws are clean. Dark purple trail, cosmic debris floating off the connection point. When you land E2 and go in for the engage, the particle trail follows you through the dash. Looks phenomenal in teamfights when you’re diving the backline. The R steals each get a Dark Star filter applied to whatever ult you copy, which is the kind of detail that justifies 1820 RP on a champion like Sylas who interacts with every other champion’s kit.

Recall animation has Sylas channeling dark star energy between his chains, building up this cosmic sphere before it collapses. Short and clean. No fifteen-second cinematic, just a solid thematic moment.

The Dark Star line and release context

Dark Star dropped October 23, 2024. Late into season 14. Pandart Studio nailed the splash, the composition puts Sylas at the center of a collapsing star system with chains extending out like gravitational arms pulling everything apart. Portfolio piece material honestly.

The Dark Star skinline is one of Riot’s longest running cosmic horror themes. Jarvan, Thresh, Kha’Zix, Mordekaiser, Karma. Sylas fits the line better than I expected. The chains translate perfectly into gravitational tethers. Kinda feels like Riot designed Dark Star specifically waiting for a chain champion to put in it.

6 chromas total. Quasar is my pick, the red-to-purple gradient across the model looks like an actual quasar spectrum and reads cleanly against the Rift. Sapphire turns the whole thing into a blue giant star aesthetic which works if you want something less sinister. Pearl exists for the people who want white chromas on everything (sidebar: Pearl chromas are the pumpkin spice of League cosmetics and I will die on this hill). Ability breakdown for Sylas mains

Spent maybe 60 games with this last November specifically tracking how the VFX affect gameplay readability. The Q hitbox reads slightly wider than it actually is because of the dark matter particles. Could be wrong here but I think the second Q pop has a frame or two of visual noise that makes it harder for enemies to react. Not a competitive advantage exactly, just something I noticed in lane.

W timing feels identical to base. The black hole heal effect is gorgeous but doesnt obscure the actual heal number popup which matters when you’re calculating trades pre-6. Good design choice there.

E1 throw into E2 dash combo has this trailing comet effect. In a gank scenario where your jungler is coming in, the visual sells the engage harder. Had a game last Friday where I landed E2 on their Katarina under tower and the cosmic explosion on contact made my duo think I proced something extra. Just the skin being flashy.

(Random aside: the Dark Star Sylas splash has been my desktop wallpaper since release and my coworkers think it’s album art.)

Is Dark Star Sylas worth 1820 RP?

Verdict time. Full Legendary price, earns it. New VO from Fergus O’Donnell carries weight. Every ability got meaningful VFX updates. The R interaction with stolen ults adds a layer of visual identity that most Legendaries dont bother with. For a champion who literally uses other champions’ abilities, having each stolen ult get the Dark Star treatment is massive.

If you main Sylas this is arguably the best Sylas skin full stop. The competition is Project Sylas and Ashen Slayer, both solid but neither Legendary tier. Dark Star Sylas gives you the complete package. Voice, particles, recall, thematic cohesion. 1820 RP well spent for mains. Even if you only play Sylas as a counterpick into heavy-AP comps, this skin makes those games feel special. Skip it if you dont play Sylas, obviously. But if you’ve been climbing with him this season and want one skin to lock in permanently, this is the one.
