Dark Star Kha'Zix - Splash, Price & Chromas

First time I saw Dark Star Kha’Zix load into my game I thought somebody modded the client. Not even joking. The purple-black cosmic theme on an assassin bug just works on a level most Epic skins dont reach. Been running this as my default Kha’Zix skin since around season 8 and honestly haven’t found a reason to swap off.

What the skin actually changes

So the big sell here is the VFX overhaul. Every ability got the Dark Star treatment and it shows. Your Q isolation proc hits with this deep violet energy burst that feels heavier than base. Hard to describe but the sound design pairs with the visual in a way that makes last-hitting isolated targets in the jungle even more satisfying. Could be wrong here but I think the Q animation is slightly smoother too, though thats probably placebo.

W fires these cosmic projectiles instead of the standard void spikes. The slow field left behind has that signature Dark Star swirl to it. Clean read in teamfights which matters when you’re diving the backline and need to hit the heal on multiple targets. E leap leaves a dark matter trail. Looks sick when you’re ganking from over a wall at like 2 AM in a ranked game where nobody is warding.

The R stealth shimmer got a cosmic overlay. Subtle change but it fits the theme. When you evolve abilities the visual upgrades stack nicely on top of the Dark Star base. Evolved wings specifically look incredible mid-leap. No new voice lines, voice stays default, but the character model does enough heavy lifting that I never really miss new VO.

Recall animation is where Riot put extra effort. Kha’Zix tears open a rift in space and gets pulled into it. Short, punchy, memorable. Way better than most Epic tier recalls from that era. (Random aside: I’ve seen teammates stop to watch this recall in bot lane which is both flattering and terrible for tempo.)

The Dark Star line and where Kha’Zix fits

Released May 3, 2017. Right in the middle of when Riot was pushing the Dark Star skinline hard. Thresh, Varus, Orianna, Jarvan all got Dark Star treatments around the same period. Kha’Zix fits the theme better than most of them honestly. An alien predator consuming stars? Makes more sense than half the roster they picked.

Xu ‘Crow God’ Cheng handled the splash and they went hard on it. The composition pulls you into this void-space scene with Kha’Zix at the center, wings spread, galaxies collapsing around him. One of the better splash arts in the entire Dark Star collection. I had it as my desktop background for maybe six months back in season 9 I think or 10 dont remember exactly.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which is unusual for an Epic skin but honestly I’m not mad about it. The purple-black-cosmic color scheme is already perfect. Adding a Ruby or Obsidian variant would probably dilute the vibe. Sometimes less is more.

1350 RP puts it at standard Epic pricing. Shop has it permanently so no vault anxiety. You can pick it up whenever.

How it plays in practice

Not gonna lie, the VFX clarity on this skin is actually above average for jungle. I’ve played maybe 150 games of Kha’Zix with Dark Star specifically and the isolation indicator reads cleanly even in chaotic teamfights. Last Tuesday I dove their Jinx under tier 2 tower, proc’d isolation because her support was peeling top side, and the Q burst visual made it crystal clear I had the execute angle. Little things like that matter when you’re climbing.

The model silhouette with evolved abilities looks distinct enough that enemies can tell what you’ve evolved. Some people call that a disadvantage. Kinda feels like it doesn’t matter in Diamond and below because people aren’t tracking your evolution path that closely anyway. Real talk though, the evolved E wings on Dark Star Kha’Zix might be the single coolest looking ability evolution across all his skins.

Should you buy Dark Star Kha’Zix?

Verdict time. For 1350 RP this is one of those skins that punches way above its price tier. New VFX on every ability, solid recall animation, an S-tier splash, and a thematic concept that actually makes sense for the champion. The only real competition is Odyssey Kha’Zix if you prefer the brighter sci-fi look, but Dark Star hits the predator fantasy harder.

Worth 1350 if you main Kha’Zix. Even if you’re just a jungle fill player who picks him into squishy comps, this skin makes every game feel a little more premium. Been spamming this in Diamond for years and the novelty still hasn’t worn off. Might be overthinking it but I genuinely believe good VFX clarity helps your gameplay on assassins where split-second target selection matters. Top pick for Kha’Zix mains, easy recommendation. Skip it only if you already own Odyssey and feel locked in there.
