First game I played with Astronaut Bard was around 3 AM on a Tuesday, solo queue, Diamond 2 lobby. Locked it in without even checking the splash properly. The loading screen hit and I just sat there staring at this little space penguin floating through the cosmos. Banger splash. Lucas Parolin and West Studio handled the artwork and honestly they captured something weirdly peaceful about Bard drifting through space with his meeps trailing behind like tiny satellites.

How Astronaut Bard actually plays

The VFX rework on this skin is clean. Q fires out this glowing teal energy bolt that feels crisper than base Bard, and when it stuns two targets theres a satisfying cosmic burst effect. Not sure if it’s just me but the hitbox feels more readable on Astronaut compared to default, which helps when you’re threading Q through minion waves in lane.

W shrines get the full space treatment. Little holographic health packs that pulse with light. They look great on the Rift, especially at night map settings. E portal turns into this wormhole effect, blue and glowing, and teammates actually use it more often because it looks inviting instead of the weird golden tunnel on base. Could be wrong here but I think the visual clarity on the portal entrance is better too.

The ult is where this skin earns its keep. R drops this massive astronaut helmet dome over the area. Played maybe 150 games with this skin and the Tempered Fate animation never gets old. Trapped their Jinx in dragon pit last week with it and the freeze effect has this frosted glass look that reads perfectly in teamfights. No new voice lines, kept the base VO, but Bard’s cosmic chimes already fit the astronaut theme naturally so it doesnt feel like a miss.

Recall animation is worth mentioning. Bard plants a little flag on the ground like a moon landing. Simple change – huge impact. The meeps float around in tiny space helmets which is genuinely one of the best details Riot has put into an Epic tier skin.

The Astronaut line and where Bard fits

Released May 28, 2020. Right in the middle of season 10. The Astronauts skinline dropped a batch that year and Bard was the standout pick from the set. Kinda feels like Riot designed the whole line around Bard’s aesthetic and then fit the other champions in after.

The Astronauts theme works because it leans into cute space exploration rather than serious sci-fi. Bard already floats around collecting chimes like some interdimensional wanderer, so strapping a spacesuit on him is the most natural thematic fit imaginable. (Random aside: my duo partner who mains support has this skin as his phone wallpaper and I cant even judge him for it.)

8 chromas total for Astronaut Bard. Aquamarine is my go-to, the light blue reads clean against most Rift backgrounds and gives off deep space vibes. Ruby goes hard if you want something that pops in teamfights, the red contrast against the teal VFX creates this nice visual tension. Chrono is the sleeper pick though, dark navy with crimson accents that looks more serious than the base skin’s playful palette.

1350 RP puts this at standard Epic pricing. Still in the shop, permanent availability. For what you get with the VFX overhaul, new recall, and meep redesign, the price point feels justified. Been running this as my primary Bard skin since season 11 and I keep coming back to it over Snow Day and Elderwood.

Should you buy Astronaut Bard?

Real verdict: this is arguably the best Bard skin if you care about gameplay feel. Elderwood has the prestige factor and Cafe Cuties is newer, but Astronaut Bard hits the sweet spot between visual clarity and personality. The Q and R VFX are genuinely easier to track in chaotic teamfights, which matters when you’re trying to peel for your ADC or land a clutch engage from fog.

Spammed this in Diamond for three seasons now. Worth it. The skin holds up well even against newer releases because the Astronaut aesthetic is timeless in a way that some of the flashier skinlines aren’t. Real talk though, if you dont play Bard at least semi-regularly, 1350 RP is better spent elsewhere. But for Bard mains and support players who rotate him into their comp? Top pick. Maybe just my experience but games where I lock in Astronaut Bard, my team actually follows up on portals more. The skin sells the engage.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Not the cheapest Epic skin purchase you’ll ever make relative to some budget options, but Bard mains specifically know the difference a good skin makes when you’re roaming through jungle at level 6 trying to gank mid. The space helmet meeps alone are worth the price of admission, season 12 I think or maybe 13 I grabbed every chroma on sale and dont regret it.
