Kog'Maw

Kog'Maw Skins

15 skins available

Kog'Maw is one of those champions where the skin catalog tells a story about how Riot's art team evolved over 14 years. Been playing him on and off since season 3, mostly as a pocket pick when my team needs late-game insurance in bot lane. The little void puppy has 15 skins total and honestly the range is wild. You got some ancient 520 RP texture swaps sitting next to polished 1350 Epic skins that completely transform how he feels. Not gonna lie, ranking these is harder than it looks because Kog's base model is so distinctive that even small changes read well on the Rift.

How Kog'Maw's Skin Collection Shaped Up Over the Years

Fifteen skins spanning from 2010 to 2024. Thats a solid run for a champion who's never really been the poster child of League. Caterpillar Kog'Maw kicked things off back in 2010 and if you've seen it recently you know it shows its age. The early skins - Caterpillar, Sonoran, Monarch - are all Standard tier texture jobs. Fine for 2010 standards but nothing you'd lock in today expecting to turn heads.

The tier breakdown sits at 8 Standard skins, 6 Epics, and 1 Mythic. No Legendary. Worth repeating that. Kog'Maw in 2024 still doesnt have a Legendary skin. Could be wrong here but I think he's one of the older champions who got completely passed over for the 1820 RP treatment. Feels like Riot keeps giving him solid Epics instead of committing to a full VO and animation overhaul.

The Epics carry the catalog though. Lion Dance, Battlecast, Arcanist, Bee'Maw, Shan Hai Scrolls, and Zap'Maw all sit at 1350 RP and most of them deliver. Six Epics for one champion is respectable. The Standard skins range from 520 to 975 RP and they're exactly what you'd expect from that era. Reindeer Kog'Maw is a Snowdown legacy skin that pops up once a year. Jurassic Kog'Maw has this weird charm to it. Deep Sea is cool thematically but the execution feels dated now.

Victorious Kog'Maw dropped in 2024 as the ranked reward skin. Can't buy it. Either you earned Gold+ that season or you didn't. (Random aside: I actually grinded out my alt account specifically for this one because I missed the cutoff on my main by like two days.) The collection went from basic recolors to genuinely creative Epics over those 14 years and you can literally see Riot's art pipeline improving skin by skin.

Best Kog'Maw Skins to Run in Ranked

Hextech Kog'Maw sits at the top and it's not particularly close. Mythic tier, special acquisition through Hextech crafting. The model turns him into this crystalline void creature with blue-purple energy running through everything. His W auto attacks get this satisfying hextech particle effect and the R artillery shells leave geometric impact craters. Been running this one exclusively since I rolled it from a gemstone back in season 9 I think. The recall animation where he assembles himself from hextech components is clean. S-tier Kog'Maw cosmetic.

Lion Dance Kog'Maw comes second. 1350 RP, Lunar Revel skinline. The firecracker theme works perfectly because Kog already spits projectiles everywhere. His R drops these little firework explosions and the W enhanced autos shoot out sparks. Locked this in for maybe 30 games during Lunar New Year last year and it just feels right. The sound design carries hard here. Every ability has this popping crackle to it that makes CSing weirdly satisfying.

Battlecast at 1350 RP is the tryhard pick. Part of Viktor's Battlecast line so the aesthetic is all mechanical and industrial. Kog becomes this mounted artillery turret basically. The R indicator is cleaner on this skin than base, might be placebo but I swear the circle reads better against certain map textures. My ADC duo partner spammed this for an entire split and kept saying the auto attack animation felt smoother. Not sure if it's just me but the Battlecast skins in general seem to have slightly crisper VFX.

Arcanist Kog'Maw is the sleeper pick. Magic book aesthetic, purple and gold particles, his passive explosion on death leaves this arcane sigil on the ground. The W range indicator pops in a really satisfying purple. Played this into a Vel'Koz lane last Tuesday and honestly the color contrast between the two void creatures made teamfights way easier to track.

Bee'Maw. Okay look. It's a bee. Kog'Maw in a bee costume. The R drops little honey splats. His passive death explosion is a pollen cloud. It's adorable and if you're the type who runs Bee skins on every champion that has one, this is mandatory. Not the most impressive from a VFX standpoint but the thematic commitment is there. Kinda feels like Riot designed this skin specifically for ARAM where nobody takes anything seriously.

Skinlines and Where Kog'Maw Fits

Kog'Maw shows up across a scattered set of skinlines. Battlecast is probably his best thematic home. The whole "living weapons platform" angle fits a champion whose kit is literally built around being a stationary artillery piece in late-game teamfights. Viktor would approve.

The Lunar Revel firecracker theme with Lion Dance works because of gameplay synergy. Champion that spits things = champion that shoots fireworks. Simple math. The Storybook line gave us Pug'Maw which is one of those skins that's either your favorite thing in the game or you actively hate seeing it. No middle ground. (Sidebar for Kog mains specifically: if you run Pug'Maw in ranked people WILL flame you in champ select, speaking from experience.)

Shan Hai Scrolls is the Chinese mythology inspired line and Kog got a solid entry there. The ink-wash painting style translates well to his abilities. Arcanist pulls from the magical academy fantasy. Deep Sea is the Forgotten Depths line which honestly fits Kog's void creature identity better than most people give it credit for. Real talk though, the older skinlines like Day Job (Caterpillar) and the standalone themes feel disconnected from modern League's approach to cohesive skin universes.

Might be overthinking it but there's a pattern where Kog works best in skinlines that lean into his identity as something that shoots projectiles. Battlecast artillery. Firecracker fireworks. Arcanist magic bolts. The skins that try to make him cute (Pug'Maw, Bee'Maw) work too but for different reasons - contrast between adorable model and disgusting gameplay of melting people with W max range autos.

Budget Picks vs Premium Kog'Maw Skins

The Standard tier on Kog'Maw is rough. Most of these are 520-975 RP texture swaps from 2010-2013. Monarch Kog'Maw at 520 RP is literally just butterfly wings on base Kog. Sonoran is a desert palette swap. These are the kind of skins you own because you got them from a chest and shrugged. Fine for what they are but nothing to actively pursue.

If you're on a budget, honestly just save for one of the Epics. 1350 RP gets you Battlecast or Arcanist and either one is a massive upgrade over anything in the Standard range. The gap between 975 RP Jurassic and 1350 RP Battlecast is enormous in terms of what you actually get. New particles, new sounds, new recall. Worth the extra 375 RP every time.

Hextech is technically free if you're patient with Hextech crafting but the gemstone cost means most people won't have it. Best value pick for Kog is Battlecast at 1350 RP. It's permanent shop, always available, and the VFX quality holds up against skins released years later. Lion Dance is close second but its Legacy status means you gotta wait for Lunar Revel to grab it. For the one-tricks out there who play 500 games a season on this champion, grab Battlecast first, Lion Dance when it rotates back, and pray for a Legendary announcement sometime before season 20.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Kog'Maw have?

Kog'Maw has 15 skins total as of 2024. Eight Standard tier, six Epics at 1350 RP each, and one Mythic (Hextech). Solid collection for a champion who's never been top of the popularity charts. The range spans from 2010 all the way to Victorious in 2024 so theres plenty to pick from depending on your budget.

What is the best Kog'Maw skin?

Hextech Kog'Maw if you can get it. Mythic tier, best particles and model in his entire catalog. If you want something actually purchasable, Battlecast or Lion Dance at 1350 RP are your best bets. Been running Hextech in my Diamond games for years and nothing else comes close. Top pick for Kog mains.

What is the cheapest Kog'Maw skin?

Monarch Kog'Maw and Sonoran Kog'Maw both sit at 520 RP. They're basic texture changes from 2010 though. No new particles, no new sounds. Honestly save the RP and grab an Epic instead, the quality gap is massive. Caterpillar is also 520 and equally bare-bones.

Does Kog'Maw have a Legendary skin?

Nope. No Legendary for Kog'Maw. Still waiting. His highest tier is Mythic with Hextech Kog'Maw but that's a crafting exclusive not a 1820 RP shop skin. Feels like an oversight honestly. Champion's been out since 2010 and still no new VO or full animation overhaul through a Legendary. Maybe someday.

What skinlines is Kog'Maw in?

Kog shows up in Battlecast, Lunar Revel (Lion Dance), Snowdown Showdown (Reindeer), Forgotten Depths (Deep Sea), Arcanist, Bee, Shan Hai Scrolls, and a few standalone themes. Battlecast fits him best gameplay-wise. The artillery platform fantasy just works for a champion built around W range and R poke.

Does Kog'Maw have chromas?

Yeah several of his Epics have chroma sets. Arcanist, Bee'Maw, and Shan Hai Scrolls all got chromas when they released. The counts vary but you're looking at 6-8 options per skin typically. Obsidian chromas tend to look cleanest on Kog because the dark tones contrast well with his bright ability particles on the Rift.

When was Kog'Maw's last skin released?

Victorious Kog'Maw in 2024. Ranked reward skin so you cant buy it. Before that was Zap'Maw. Riot's been giving him skins at a reasonable pace lately, roughly one every year or so. Not the fastest cadence but better than champions like Skarner who wait ages between releases.

Is Kog'Maw worth buying skins for?

If you main him or play him regularly in ranked, absolutely. His Epic skins at 1350 RP are genuinely good quality. Battlecast and Lion Dance both change how the champion feels to play with better VFX clarity. If you only play him once a month in ARAM, probably skip. But for one-tricks climbing on Kog? Worth every RP.
