Winterblessed Zilean

First game I played with Winterblessed Zilean was around 1 AM on a Wednesday, right after the 2022 winter event dropped. Locked in Zilean support into a Leona lane and honestly forgot I was even running a new skin until my ADC pinged the bomb VFX. Thats how clean the particles read. Not flashy for the sake of flashy, just a solid winter-themed rework of his kit visuals that actually feels good in lane.

How Winterblessed changes Zilean’s kit

The big draw here is the VFX overhaul. Zilean’s Q bombs swap from the usual clockwork gears to these icy crystalline orbs that shatter on detonation. Looks sharp. The double bomb stun combo specifically has this frost burst effect that reads way better than base in teamfights where you’re trying to peel for your backline.

His E speed-up leaves a trail of snowflake particles on the ground. Subtle change but I notice it every game. The slow version has a heavier blue tint so you can actually tell at a glance whether you buffed or debuffed, which honestly base Zilean struggles with sometimes. Been running this in Diamond for maybe 40 games and the visual clarity on E alone makes it worth considering.

Recall animation is new and fits the Winterblessed fantasy. Zilean conjures this little snow globe scene with his clock motif worked in. Not gonna lie, I’ve sat through the full recall animation more times than I should admit mid-game. Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack projectiles also got a slight rework, they read a bit more like ice shards than the default. Voice lines stay base though, no new VO. Standard for an Epic tier skin at this price point.

The ult is where it gets interesting. When Zilean revives someone with R, the resurrection effect swaps to this winter aurora burst instead of the golden hourglass. Played a game last week where I ulted our diving Kayn right in the middle of dragon pit and the ice explosion on revive actually made their Jinx flash away. Placebo or not, the VFX hit different.

The Winterblessed line and where Zilean fits

Winterblessed dropped December 8, 2022. Late season 12 content. Exia Xiaotong and West Studio handled the artwork, and they captured this regal ice-deity vibe that works surprisingly well on a champion most people picture as a weird old man with a clock on his back.

The Winterblessed skinline is one of Riot’s better holiday-adjacent themes. Not as on-the-nose as Snowdown skins but still clearly winter-coded. Zilean fits the line naturally because the whole “time sage blessed by winter” concept actually gives him a visual identity beyond “old dude.” Other Winterblessed skins in the set like Warwick and Diana lean harder into the combat fantasy, but Zilean’s version feels more composed. Dignified, maybe.

9 chromas total for this one. Obsidian is my personal pick, the dark palette against the ice VFX creates this contrast that just works in-game. Sapphire doubles down on the blue winter theme if thats your thing, and Wreathguard goes full holiday with red and green that I’ve seen maybe 3 times in my games all season. (Random aside: the Pearl chroma on this skin is genuinely one of the cleanest white-and-gold recolors Riot has put out for any champion.) Most of the other chromas like Ruby and Citrine are fine but nothing I’d go out of my way to grab individually.

Should you buy Winterblessed Zilean?

Real verdict: if you play Zilean with any regularity, this is a strong pickup. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across the full kit, solid recall, clean model update. The base Zilean model has aged rough and this fixes that problem completely.

Kinda feels like Zilean mains got lucky with this one because his skin catalog is pretty thin. Blood Moon is decent, Sugar Rush is a meme pick, and the older skins havent held up well. Winterblessed slots in as arguably the best Zilean skin right now. The competition isnt fierce but the skin earns it on its own merits too.

For support mains climbing ranked who want their Zilean to not look like a season 2 relic, this is the answer. Been daily driving it since release and I keep coming back even after trying Arcana. The VFX clarity on double bomb alone has probably won me a handful of lanes where the enemy didn’t respect the stun zone. Worth 1350 if you main Zilean, easy recommendation. Skip it if you only pull him out once every 50 games though, no point spending RP on a pocket pick (sidebar for Zilean one-tricks specifically: you already bought this, I know you did).
