Resistance Illaoi

First time I saw Resistance Illaoi load in, I thought someone modded the game. The whole mech-resistance soldier look on a champion who slams tentacles felt so out of left field. Been running this skin since it dropped in season 8 and honestly it still holds up. Not gonna lie, Illaoi doesnt get a lot of skin love from Riot, so when this one landed it felt like a big deal for anyone who mains her.

What Resistance Illaoi actually changes

The tentacles are the main event here. Instead of the Nagakabouros god-tentacles from base, you get these mechanical hydraulic arms that slam down with a satisfying crunch. New VFX across the board. Her Q slam sends out this orange energy wave that reads way cleaner in teamfights than the base green. The W leap has a mech-powered impact effect. Solid stuff.

E is where it gets interesting. The spirit pull has this tech-infused tether that honestly looks better than some Legendary skins manage. Could be wrong here but I think they spent extra time on Illaoi’s E specifically because thats the ability people notice most in lane. When you rip someone’s spirit out and the tentacles start going to work, the mechanical VFX just pop.

R is clean. The tentacle spawns have a hydraulic deployment animation. Last Tuesday I ulted three people in dragon pit and the visual chaos was somehow more readable than base Illaoi’s ult. For 1350 RP you’re getting new VFX on every ability plus a new recall animation where she does this resistance fighter salute thing. Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Standard for an Epic tier skin.

(Random aside: the recall animation made me realize how badly Illaoi needs a Legendary with full voice work.)

The Battlecast universe and where Resistance fits

Released March 15, 2018. Late season 8 if I remember right. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen nailed the splash. The Resistance faction is the human-side counter to the Battlecast line, so Illaoi is basically fighting Viktor’s robot army with repurposed mech tech. Fits her character perfectly. A priestess who bends power to her will, now bending stolen Battlecast technology.

The Resistance skinline doesn’t get enough credit. Caitlyn got one too. But Illaoi’s version feels the most thematic because her tentacles becoming mechanical arms sells the whole “we stole their tech and turned it against them” fantasy harder than any other champion could.

7 chromas available if you want variety. Tanzanite is my go-to, the deep purple with the mech aesthetic gives off a Decepticon energy that I cant stop picking. Obsidian goes full dark mode which works for the gritty resistance fighter vibe. Ruby is the safe pick, looks clean but nothing surprising. Shop has it at 1350 RP, permanent availability so no rush.

Should you pick up Resistance Illaoi?

Real verdict: if you play Illaoi at all, this is probably your best option. Kinda feels like Riot knew they weren’t going to give her many skins so they packed extra value into this one. The VFX quality punches above its weight class for an Epic skin. Played maybe 200 games with this thing across Diamond and the tentacle clarity alone makes it worth considering over base.

The one knock is the model itself. It’s good, not great. The mech armor reads a bit busy from certain angles, especially when you’re splitpushing and the camera is zoomed in. In teamfights at normal zoom? Perfect. Pre-6 laning phase the skin looks fantastic because you can actually see the detail on the idol she carries.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Illaoi one-tricks dont have the luxury of choosing between fifteen options like Lux mains do. Might be overthinking it but I think this skin actually makes your tentacle placement slightly easier to track because the orange VFX contrast better against the Rift’s green. That ranked game where my Kayn inted bot lane, I still managed to 1v2 top partly because I could track all four tentacles instantly. Coincidence? Maybe. But the visual clarity is real. Top pick for Illaoi mains, easy recommendation if you lock in the Kraken Priestess with any regularity.
