First time I saw Northern Storm Volibear was back in like season 2 or 3, cant remember exactly. Someone on the enemy team locked it in and I had no idea what champion I was even looking at for a solid five seconds. The fur coloring threw me off completely. Not the flashiest skin Volibear has ever gotten, but theres something about early League skins that just hits different when you see them in a modern lobby.
What Northern Storm actually changes
Alright so this is a 750 RP Standard tier skin. Temper expectations. You’re getting a model swap and a new color palette, and that is basically it. No new VFX on Q, W, E, or R. Voice lines stay base. No recall animation changes either.
The main thing here is Volibear goes from his default brown-gold look to this icy blue-white fur with darker armor pieces. Kinda feels like they took Volibear and dropped him into the Freljord’s coldest corner. The armor has these steel blue tones that read pretty clean in lane, especially against the green of Summoner’s Rift. Not gonna lie, the contrast is solid for a skin this old.
The claws get a slight color shift too. More of a pale steel look compared to base. In teamfights you can still track him fine, which is more than I can say for some 1350 RP skins that blend into particle effects. Been running this in my Diamond games a few times last month and the model holds up better than you’d expect for something from 2011. Simple change – huge impact on readability.
(Random aside: I keep this skin in rotation purely because nobody else uses it and the loading screen splash catches people off guard.)
The Arctic Ops line and release context
Northern Storm Volibear dropped November 29, 2011. Pre-season 2 era. West Studio handled the splash, and they captured this frozen warrior vibe that fits Volibear’s lore perfectly. The Arctic Ops skinline is one of Riot’s older thematic sets and Northern Storm slots into it naturally.
Could be wrong here but I think this was only Volibear’s second skin ever. Back when Riot was pumping out 520-750 RP skins like it was nothing. Season 1 and 2 players remember that era. 750 RP felt fair for what you got, and honestly it still does.
No chromas on this one. Legacy vault skin, so you’re not finding it in the regular shop rotation. Hextech only these days unless Riot opens the vault for an event. Seen maybe two of these in my games all season, which honestly makes it more appealing. Last Tuesday I spotted one in an ARAM lobby and the guy was clearly a Volibear one-trick running it for the rarity flex.
Should you grab Northern Storm Volibear?
Real verdict: if you main Volibear and want something clean without all the visual noise of his newer Legendary stuff, Northern Storm is a sleeper pick. 750 RP feels fair for what you get. The blue-white palette reads well in lane, the model swap is distinct enough from base, and the Legacy status means you won’t see it on every other Volibear player in your ranked games.
Skip this if you need flashy VFX or new ability particles on your skins. This is a texture and model job from 2011 and it shows in that department. But might be overthinking it – not every skin needs to be a production. Sometimes you just want your bear to look cold and mean. Three things stood out: clean color palette, solid splash from West Studio, and that rare factor from being vaulted. Worth 750 RP if you main Volibear, especially if it pops up in Your Shop or during a Legacy sale event. Not the best Volibear skin full stop, but a respectable pick for collectors and players who appreciate the old school League aesthetic.
