First time I saw Karate Kennen in a loading screen I thought someone was running a custom skin. Not gonna lie, it caught me off guard because you almost never see this one in ranked. Been playing Kennen on and off since season 3 and I think I’ve spotted maybe four or five Karate Kennen users total across hundreds of games. The skin just flies under the radar completely.
What Karate Kennen actually changes
This is a 520 RP Standard tier skin so temper expectations. You get a new model and texture swap. Kennen trades the purple ninja look for a white karate gi with a black belt. Clean look. The headband stays but the outfit shift gives him a martial arts tournament vibe instead of the usual Kinkou Order ninja aesthetic.
No new VFX on any abilities. Your Q shuriken, W passive marks, E lightning rush, R Slicing Maelstrom – all base particles. Voice lines stay base too. No new recall animation either. At this price point thats expected honestly. Riot wasnt doing much with 520 RP skins back in 2010, you basically got a costume change and that was the whole deal.
The model itself holds up okay for its age. The white gi reads well against the Rift, especially in teamfights where Kennen can get lost in the visual noise. Could be wrong here but I feel like the lighter color scheme actually makes it easier to track your positioning when you E into the backline for a five-man ult. Small thing but after spamming Kennen in Diamond during season 12 I noticed it.
Release and the Legacy line
Karate Kennen dropped November 8, 2010. Early days of League. Part of the Legacy skinline which is basically Riot’s catch-all for older catalog skins that dont fit neatly into a thematic universe. No splash artist credited in the data, which tracks for skins from that era.
Zero chromas available. Shop has it for 520 RP, permanent availability. For context, 520 is the second lowest price tier Riot offers. You’re paying less than a fancy coffee. (Random aside: I keep a mental tier list of every Kennen skin and this one sits solidly in the middle, not embarrassing but not exciting.)
The splash art is from that old generation where champions looked like they were painted for a fantasy novel cover. Has a certain charm to it. Kennen in a fighting stance with the gi flowing. Simple composition but it works for what it is.
Who should pick up Karate Kennen
Real verdict: this skin exists for Kennen collectors and people who want something different from base without dropping serious RP. If you’re a Kennen one-trick climbing through ranked and you want the flex, there’s better options. Arctic Ops has the VFX. Infernal has the fire theme. Blood Moon hits the aesthetic hard. Karate Kennen is the budget pick.
That said, 520 RP well spent if you just want variety in your skin rotation. Last Tuesday I was cycling through my Kennen skins between games and locked in Karate for a top lane matchup against Darius. Something about the white gi felt appropriate for the 1v1 energy. Won lane pre-6, carried the teamfight at dragon. Felt right.
Kinda feels like this skin appeals more to players who started League early and remember when every new skin was just a texture swap and we were happy about it. The simplicity is the point. No flashy particles, no custom animations, just Kennen in a karate outfit throwing shurikens and stunning the entire enemy comp. Skip it if you need spectacle. Grab it if you appreciate the old school vibe and want a cheap way to diversify your Kennen game. Honest take – its not the best Kennen skin but its far from the worst, and at this price you really cant complain.
