First time I saw Dark Star Thresh load in on the enemy team, I genuinely paused. Not because I was scared of the Thresh player (okay maybe a little), but because the skin just commands attention in a way most Legendaries dont. This was back in season 6, mid-2016, and I remember thinking Riot finally figured out how to make a support skin feel like a boss encounter. Been maining Thresh on and off since season 4, and this is the skin that made me pick him back up for a solid two months of ranked.

What the Dark Star treatment actually does to Thresh

So this is a full Legendary at 1820 RP, meaning new model, new VFX, new voice lines, new recall. The whole package. Thresh goes from undead warden to cosmic horror, basically a sentient black hole wearing robes. The color palette shifts to deep purples and blacks with these swirling galaxy particles everywhere. Clean look.

The Q (Death Sentence) is where it hits hardest. The hook travels as this spiraling void energy that honestly reads better in teamfights than base Thresh hook. Easier to track for me as the player, harder for the enemy to react to because the visual is just different enough from what they expect. Could be wrong here but I think the hitbox visual actually matches the actual hitbox better on this skin than default.

W lantern becomes this miniature dark star. Looks sick. The E (Flay) sweep has these cosmic particle trails that linger for a split second, and the R (The Box) walls turn into these gravitational barriers with galaxy textures. Every ability feels heavier. More impactful. Not sure if its just me but last hitting souls with Dark Star Thresh feels more satisfying because the soul collection animation has this gravitational pull effect.

Mark Oliver on the voice acting here. The new VO is deep, reverberating, talks about consuming stars and unmaking reality. Way more menacing than base Thresh’s creepy jailer vibe. Different energy entirely. I was in a ranked game around 2 AM last summer, playing bot lane specifically, and my ADC said the voice lines were “giving them anxiety.” Good. That’s the point when you’re trying to peel and zone in a teamfight.

The recall animation has Thresh opening a black hole and getting pulled into it. Short, clean, no filler. Banger recall honestly. (Random aside: I used to cancel this recall on purpose just to watch the black hole animation start again because it looked that good.)

The Dark Star line and where Thresh fits

Dark Star Thresh dropped June 15, 2016. Right in the middle of season 6. Victor ‘3rdColossus’ Maury nailed the splash, the composition with Thresh floating above a collapsing star system is one of the better splash arts in the entire game. Not exaggerating.

The Dark Star skinline is one of Riot’s better thematic lines. Cosmic entities that devour galaxies. Thresh fits it naturally because his kit already revolves around collecting and trapping, so reframing that as a cosmic predator consuming worlds just works. Dark Star Varus, Dark Star Kha’Zix, Dark Star Jarvan, they all share the aesthetic. But Thresh was one of the first and I think still the best executed of the set.

One Antimatter chroma available. Just the one. Black and deep red color scheme that honestly goes harder than the base purple. Might be overthinking it but the red accents on Antimatter make the abilities pop differently against Summoner’s Rift greens. Been running the Antimatter variant in Diamond for maybe 50 games and I keep going back to it over the default Dark Star colors.

Still in the shop. Full Legendary price, 1820 RP, no vault rotation nonsense. You can grab it whenever.

Voice lines carry this skin

Real talk though. The VO is what separates Dark Star Thresh from being a good Legendary to a great one. Lines about entropy, about inevitability, about stars dying. It shifts Thresh from a torturer to something existential. Played maybe 200 games with this skin across multiple seasons and the voice lines never got old for me. That almost never happens.

Compare it to something like Blood Moon Thresh or High Noon Thresh. Those are solid skins. Good VFX. But the voice work on Dark Star is in a different tier. The filter they applied gives everything this deep space resonance. When you hook someone and Thresh says something about dragging them into the void, it just hits different in the context of a late-game engage where you’re pulling their backline carry into your team.

Season 9 I think, or maybe 10 dont remember exactly, there was that ranked game where my Kayn inted three times before level 6 and I still managed to carry teamfights on Dark Star Thresh purely because the presence this skin gives you makes people respect your hooks more. Placebo? Maybe. But I’ll take it.

Should you buy Dark Star Thresh?

Verdict time. If you play Thresh at all, this is the skin. Full stop. 1820 RP well spent for mains. The new VO, the cosmic VFX on every ability, the Antimatter chroma option, the recall. Everything earns the Legendary price tag.

Not gonna lie, if you’re choosing between this and Pulsefire Thresh or High Noon Thresh, Dark Star wins for me every time. The thematic cohesion is tighter. The abilities read cleaner. The voice acting is better. High Noon is flashy and fun but Dark Star Thresh is the Thresh skin if you can only own one.

Only real downside: the skin is from 2016 so the model poly count is lower than newer Legendaries. Kinda feels like Riot could do an ASU pass on it eventually. But even with slightly dated geometry, the VFX and audio design hold up completely. Top pick for Thresh mains, easy recommendation at 1820 RP, skip only if you genuinely never play the champion.
