First time I saw Blight Crystal Varus in a loading screen I thought someone was running a custom skin. The purple crystalline look on his bow hit different from base Varus, and this was back in season 2 when most skins were just recolors. Played against one last week in Diamond and it still holds up surprisingly well for a 2012 release.

The crystal corruption look

Blight Crystal Varus swaps out the standard Darkin-corruption aesthetic for this deep violet crystal growth spreading across his body and bow. The model work is solid for a Standard tier skin. His torso and arms get covered in jagged crystal formations, and the bow itself looks like it was carved straight out of some Void crystal deposit. Clean design choice.

Not gonna lie, the VFX updates are what make this skin worth talking about. His Q charge-up and release get this purple crystalline trail that reads really well in lane. The W blight stacks show as crystal markers on enemies, which I think actually makes it easier to track your three-stack proc windows compared to base. Could be wrong here but the E ground effect also has a subtle crystal shatter to it that feels more satisfying to land in poke trades.

Voice lines stay base. No new VO here, which is expected at 975 RP. The auto attack animations feel identical to default Varus, so if you’re used to his cs rhythm nothing changes there. Been running this in ranked for maybe 30 games this season and the auto cancels feel the same.

Where Blight Crystal fits in the Varus lineup

Released May 8, 2012. Thats early League history, season 2, back when Varus himself was still fresh on the Rift. Part of the Legacy skinline. Shop has it for 975 RP, permanent availability so no vault drama.

For context, Varus has a massive skin catalog now. Arctic Ops, Dark Star, Cosmic Hunter, the recent Spirit Blossom and Empyrean releases. Blight Crystal sits at the budget end but the crystal theme is unique enough that none of the newer skins really overlap with it. The Legacy line doesnt have a strong thematic identity across champions, it’s more of a catch-all, but the crystal corruption angle gives this one its own lane.

No chromas available for this skin. Shame, because a red or green crystal variant would have been interesting. But Riot rarely goes back to add chromas on skins this old (sidebar: would love to see them prove me wrong on this one specifically).

Should you pick up Blight Crystal Varus?

Real verdict: if you main Varus and want something that looks distinct without dropping 1820 on Cosmic Hunter, this is a legitimate option. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. The updated VFX carry the skin hard. Without those it would be a skip, but the crystal particle work on Q and W gives your abilities a cleaner read in teamfight chaos.

My ADC duo ran this for two weeks straight around patch 14.3 and kept commenting on how the Q felt “crispier” to aim. Placebo probably. But the visual feedback is genuinely better than base, especially when you’re poking from backline through a messy engage. Might be overthinking it but the purple trails contrast better against Summoner’s Rift green than the default red-orange blight effects.

Skip this if you already own Dark Star or Cosmic Hunter. Those are objectively more complete packages. But for a sub-1000 RP Varus skin with actual VFX work? Solid pickup. One of those quiet skins you rarely see in Diamond lobbies but nobody questions when it shows up.
