Assassin Master Yi

First time I saw Assassin Master Yi in a loading screen I thought someone was running a custom skin. Not gonna lie, the whole ninja-assassin look caught me off guard because it leans so far from Master Yi’s default Wuju vibe. Locked it in for maybe 15 games that same week just to see how it felt in Diamond ranked. Clean skin. Nothing fancy, nothing overproduced. Just a different outfit on a champion I’ve been playing since season 3.

What actually changes on Assassin Master Yi

This is a 390 RP Standard tier skin so expectations need to stay grounded. You get a full model swap and thats about it. Master Yi trades his goggles-and-ponytail look for a darker, more traditional assassin outfit. Think cloth wraps, a hood-like headpiece, muted colors. The sword design shifts too, slightly curved blade that reads better with Alpha Strike animations even though the VFX themselves stay base.

No new particles on Q, W, E, or R. Voice lines stay base. No recall animation change. Honestly for a skin from 2009 none of that surprises me. Riot wasnt exactly shipping Legendary-tier content on 390 RP skins back then. The model itself holds up though. Played a game last Thursday around midnight where I went 14/2 with this skin and the silhouette in teamfights felt distinct enough from default that my duo partner asked if it was new. It’s not. Been in the game for over 15 years.

Kinda feels like Riot designed this for players who wanted Master Yi to look less like a meditation instructor and more like someone who’d actually gank your lane at level 6. The color palette is darker, more purple-black tones compared to the bright blues of base Yi. Simple change – huge impact on how the champion reads during Highlander. (Random aside: I’ve used this as my phone lock screen splash for two months and nobody has recognized the champion.)

Release and the Legacy line

Assassin Master Yi dropped December 17, 2009. Season one wasn’t even officially live yet. Kelly Aleshire handled the artwork, and for an early splash it has a specific energy to it. The pose is aggressive, blade forward, very different from the meditative base splash.

Part of the Legacy skinline which is basically Riot’s catch-all for older skins that dont fit a thematic universe. Shop has it for 390 RP. Permanent availability. For reference that’s cheaper than a large coffee in most cities. Master Yi mains who collect every skin in his catalog, and there’s like 16 of them now, usually grab this one early just to complete the set.

Been maining Master Yi with this equipped in my ranked rotation alongside Cosmic Blade and Eternal Sword. Assassin Yi sits at the bottom of the price bracket but it has a charm the flashier skins dont replicate. No VO refresh either, same Micha Berman voice lines you’ve heard a thousand times.

Should you buy it?

Real verdict: 390 RP feels fair for what you get. Could be wrong here but I think this skin appeals more to long-time Master Yi one-tricks than newcomers. If you’re climbing through Gold spamming Yi jungle and want something different from default without dropping 1350 on an Epic, Assassin Master Yi does the job. Not the best Master Yi skin full stop, that title probably goes to Eternal Sword or PROJECT Yi depending on your taste. But for the price of basically nothing you get a clean model that still looks decent in season 14.

Skip it if you already own three or four Yi skins and dont care about completion. Grab it if you want the cheapest visual upgrade available for your jungle clear. Three things stood out: the blade design, the hood silhouette, the darker color scheme. Everything else is base Master Yi under the hood. Literally.
