First time I saw Academy Ekko in the loading screen I thought Riot just slapped a school uniform on him and called it a day. Played maybe 30 games with it back in season 5 when it dropped. Kinda feels like that assessment wasnt totally wrong, but there’s a bit more going on if you look closer.

What Academy Ekko actually brings

So this is a Standard tier skin at 750 RP. You get a new model and texture, and thats pretty much the package. No new VFX on Q, W, E, or R. Voice lines stay base. No updated recall animation either. Ekko trades his street clothes and time gadgets for a school blazer, tie, and what looks like a modified bat he probably grabbed from gym class. The Z-Drive on his back gets a subtle redesign to fit the prep school vibe.

The color palette shifts to deep navy and gold. Clean look honestly. In lane specifically, the model reads well against most Rift backgrounds. Not sure if it’s just me but the auto attack animations feel slightly different with the bat, even though they technically arent. Placebo from the visual change I guess.

Been running this in Diamond games on and off since season 8, and one thing I noticed: the skin blends in during teamfights more than base Ekko does. The darker uniform doesn’t pop the way his default neon holographic gear does. Could be a minor advantage if you’re diving the backline and want to be less visually obvious, could be nothing. Either way the W proc circle is still the same teal color so enemies arent missing that.

The Academy line and release context

Academy Ekko released August 26, 2015. That was early in Ekko’s life as a champion, he’d only been out a few months at that point. Sixmorevodka Studio handled the splash art. They captured the vibe perfectly, Ekko leaning against lockers looking like he’s about to cause problems. Classic.

The Academy skinline is one of Riot’s more grounded themes. No cosmic powers, no mecha suits. Just champions in a school setting. Ekko fits it naturally because his whole lore is about being a genius kid from Zaun. Putting him in an academy uniform isn’t a stretch at all (sidebar for Ekko mains specifically: he looks like the kid who aces every test but still gets detention).

No chromas available for this one. Zero. What you see is what you get. Shop has it permanently, so no vault waiting or Hextech crafting nonsense. 750 RP, available any time you want it.

Should you pick up Academy Ekko?

Real verdict: this is a budget skin and it acts like one. 750 RP is fair for what you get. Model swap, new texture, decent splash. Not gonna lie, if you’re an Ekko one-trick with a collection going, you probably already own this. If you’re picking your first Ekko skin though, I’d point you toward PROJECT or Pulsefire instead. Those have the VFX and recall upgrades that make a real difference when you’re spamming Q in lane or hitting a five-man ult in a late-game teamfight.

That said, I played this skin last Tuesday in a ranked game where my support was flaming from champ select and still had a good time with it. Sometimes simple works. The uniform is clean, the bat is fun, the price is low. It’s the kind of skin you throw on when you want something different without going full sci-fi.

Academy Ekko is a solid 750 RP purchase for people who like the aesthetic. Skip it if you need flashy particles on your E or W. Keep it if you appreciate a good school uniform and a character who looks like he’s about to splitpush through detention. Standard pricing, above-average concept for the tier. Been daily driving it this week between my other Ekko skins and I think it holds up fine for a 2015 release.
