Prehistoric Hunters is one of those skinlines that flew under the radar for most players, and honestly I think thats part of its charm. Riot scattered these skins across six years starting in 2010, mixing tribal aesthetics with straight-up dinosaur fantasy, and the result is this weird caveman-meets-monster-hunter vibe that just works on certain champions. Not all of them. Some feel like stretch picks. But when Prehistoric Hunters lands, it lands hard. Been rocking a few of these in my ranked rotation since season 6 and they still hold up better than you'd expect for Standard tier skins.

What Sets Prehistoric Hunters Apart on the Rift
The visual identity here is pretty obvious. Animal hides, bone armor, tribal paint, stone weapons. Every skin in the line pulls from the same caveman toolkit but applies it differently depending on the champion. Could be wrong here but I think the thing that ties them together most is the color palette. Earthy browns, deep reds, bone white. No neon, no sparkles, no cosmic nonsense. Just raw primal energy.
Compared to something like Dragonmancers or Coven, Prehistoric Hunters keeps it simple. No shared VFX themes, no elaborate particle overhauls. These are all Standard tier skins priced between 520 and 975 RP, so you're getting model changes and texture work. Maybe a recolored ability here or there. That's the deal.
What I appreciate is the restraint. Riot didn't try to make these skins something they're not. The splashes lean into painted, almost concept-art quality. Some of them look like they belong on a fantasy novel cover from the 90s. (Random aside: Prehistoric Cho'Gath's splash has been my Discord avatar for like two years and nobody has ever commented on it.) The whole line reads more like a love letter to old-school fantasy art than a modern skin product.
The naming convention splits into a few sub-groups. You've got the "Prehistoric" prefix skins like Cho'Gath, Anivia, and Renekton. Then the "Beast Hunter" batch with Tryndamere, Sejuani, and Draven. Plus standalone names like Tribal Ryze, Huntress Sivir, Primal Udyr, Boneclaw Shyvana, and Sabretusk Sejuani. Riot clearly evolved the concept over time. The earlier ones from 2010-2011 feel more generic tribal. The 2015-2016 Beast Hunter batch went harder on the monster-hunting angle. Better direction honestly.
Real talk though. If you're comparing this to modern skinlines with legendary anchors and prestige editions, Prehistoric Hunters isn't competing in that space. It's budget picks for players who want something different from default without dropping 1350 RP. And for that niche? Solid.
Best Prehistoric Hunters Skins
Not gonna lie, ranking these was harder than I expected. They're all Standard tier so none of them blow you away with VFX, but some champions just wear the caveman look better than others.
Prehistoric Cho'Gath is my number one pick. Full stop. Something about a massive void creature covered in tribal markings and bone plating just clicks. The model changes give him this ancient kaiju feel. Played maybe 40 games on it last season in Diamond and it consistently gets comments in lobby. People forget this skin exists until they see it in the loading screen. 975 RP and honestly feels like it could pass for a budget Epic on a good day.
Beast Hunter Draven sits at number two. Draven's whole personality is showmanship, and strapping bone axes to that ego works surprisingly well. The skin came out June 2016 and it was the last addition to the Prehistoric Hunters line. Kinda feels like Riot saved one of the better fits for last. The axes read cleanly in lane which matters more than aesthetics when you're trying to catch axes in a teamfight at dragon.
Prehistoric Anivia deserves the third spot. Ice bird goes primal. The model turns her into this pterodactyl-looking creature and the color shift from blue ice to earthy tones is a nice break from her usual palette. Been maining Anivia on and off since season 5 and this skin gets way less love than Blackfrost or Festival Queen. It shouldn't. For 750 RP its a clean alternative.
Prehistoric Renekton is the safe pick. Renekton already looks like a dinosaur so putting him in bone armor and tribal gear is almost too obvious, but obvious isn't bad. He fits the theme naturally. No forcing required. Good skin for Renekton mains who want variety without going full mecha or pool party.
Huntress Sivir rounds out my top five. The boomerang blade as a bone weapon looks clean. Sivir's silhouette works well with the tribal aesthetic and the splash art from back in 2010 has this old-school Diablo concept art energy that I personally love. Not for everyone though.
Champion Roster and Thematic Fit
11 skins across 10 champions. Sejuani got two, which is interesting. Sabretusk Sejuani dropped in 2012 and Beast Hunter Sejuani came later in 2015. Different visual approach each time but same general idea: warrior on a beast mount in a prehistoric setting. Having two slots in one skinline feels a bit redundant. Could've given that second spot to someone else.
The roster splits into natural fits and weird picks. Cho'Gath, Renekton, Shyvana, and Anivia make perfect sense. They're already creatures or part-creature. Slapping tribal gear on a giant crocodile man or a dragon lady requires zero suspension of disbelief. Udyr with Primal fits too since his whole kit is about channeling animal spirits. Might be overthinking it but the primal fantasy is literally built into his champion design.
Tryndamere and Draven work as the human warriors of the group. Barbarian king goes caveman. Axe-throwing showman hunts beasts. Both solid. Ryze and Sivir are the stretch picks for me. Tribal Ryze from 2010 was one of the first in the line and it shows. The concept of "mage but with tribal tattoos" doesnt push boundaries. Sivir works a bit better since her weapon translates well to bone.
Who's missing? Honestly Volibear would've been perfect for this line. Giant bear god in prehistoric gear? Come on. Warwick too. Nidalee is the most obvious miss. She literally throws spears and transforms into a cougar. (Sidebar: I've been saying this in Reddit threads since 2016 and Riot never delivered.) Skarner, Rek'Sai, even Kha'Zix could've slotted in naturally. But the line stopped getting new additions after 2016 so I doubt we'll see expansions.
Tier Breakdown and Pricing
Every single Prehistoric Hunters skin is Standard tier. No Epics. No Legendaries. No Mythics. The entire line runs between 520 and 975 RP which makes it one of the most budget-friendly skinlines in the game. Period.
This is both the strength and the limitation. You're not getting new voice lines, unique recall animations, or overhauled ability VFX. What you get is a solid model swap and texture work. For players climbing ranked who want a skin that looks good without spending 1350+ RP, Prehistoric Hunters is exactly the right shelf to browse.
The 975 RP skins in the line tend to have slightly more polish. Prehistoric Cho'Gath at 975 feels noticeably more detailed than Tribal Ryze at 520. That price gap reflects real quality differences. Not sure if it's just me but the 520 tier skins in this line feel like they belong to an older era of League entirely. Which they do. Tribal Ryze dropped in 2010 when the game looked completely different.
Fair warning. If you're used to modern 1350 RP Epics with custom particles on every ability, these skins will feel basic. That's the trade-off. You save RP, you lose flair. For one-tricks who want a skin just to not play default, the value proposition is there. For skin collectors who want the flashiest option? Look elsewhere. Prehistoric Hunters isn't trying to compete with Spirit Blossom or Coven. Different lane entirely.
Maybe just my experience but I think the best value in the line is Prehistoric Cho'Gath at 975 and Beast Hunter Draven at 750. Both punch above their price point. The worst value might be Primal Udyr since Udyr got his VGU and Spirit Guard essentially became his definitive skin. Hard to justify any budget Udyr skin after that rework honestly.
Spanning from 2010 to 2016, this line saw Riot's approach to Standard skins evolve in real time. The 2010 entries like Tribal Ryze and Huntress Sivir are minimalist texture swaps. By 2015-2016 the Beast Hunter batch showed more intentional design language. Better silhouettes, cleaner color separation, more readable models on the Rift. Six years of craft improvement visible across eleven skins.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Prehistoric Hunters skins are there?
11 skins total across 10 champions. Sejuani got two of them, Sabretusk and Beast Hunter. The line started with Tribal Ryze back in 2010 and the last addition was Beast Hunter Draven in June 2016. Riot hasnt added anything since so the count's probably staying at 11. Every single one is Standard tier.
What is the best Prehistoric Hunters skin?
Prehistoric Cho'Gath in my opinion. The tribal bone armor on a massive void creature just hits different. Beast Hunter Draven is a close second because the bone axes read cleanly during teamfights. Both punch above their weight for Standard tier pricing. Been running Cho'Gath in ranked and it consistently gets lobby reactions.
Which champions have Prehistoric Hunters skins?
Cho'Gath, Anivia, Renekton, Draven, Tryndamere, Sivir, Ryze, Udyr, Shyvana, and Sejuani. That's 10 champions total with Sejuani holding two spots. Good mix of creatures and warrior types. Might be overthinking it but Volibear and Nidalee feel like obvious misses from the roster.
Does Prehistoric Hunters have Legendary skins?
Nope. Zero Legendaries, zero Epics. Every Prehistoric Hunters skin is Standard tier priced between 520 and 975 RP. This is a fully budget skinline. No new voice lines, no custom recalls. Just model and texture changes. Keeps things simple and keeps your wallet happy.
When did the Prehistoric Hunters skinline release?
The first skins dropped in 2010 with Tribal Ryze and Huntress Sivir. Then Riot kept adding skins sporadically through 2016 when Beast Hunter Draven closed out the line. Six year span total. The 2015-2016 Beast Hunter batch was the most cohesive design-wise. Earlier entries feel more like standalone tribal concepts.
Are Prehistoric Hunters skins worth buying?
Depends what you're after. If you main one of these champions and want a cheap alternative to default, absolutely. Cho'Gath and Draven especially deliver good value. If you want flashy particles and custom voice lines, look at higher-tier skinlines instead. These are budget picks and they know it. Nothing wrong with that.
Do Prehistoric Hunters skins have chromas?
Most of them don't. The line is old enough that it predates Riot's chroma push. A couple of the newer Beast Hunter skins picked up chromas later but the original 2010-2012 entries never got any. Not a huge loss honestly since the base color schemes already work well for the primal aesthetic.
Will Riot make more Prehistoric Hunters skins?
Doubtful. The last addition was 2016 and Riot's been focused on higher-margin skinlines since then. Could be wrong here but Standard tier releases barely happen anymore. The economics just dont work when players expect custom VFX and voice lines. If Riot revisits the concept it'll probably be a spiritual successor at Epic tier with a different name.
