First game I played with Broken Covenant Rakan was around 2 AM on a Wednesday, queued up for Diamond ranked and honestly wasnt expecting much. Rakan has so many skins at this point that new ones kind of blur together. But this one stopped me during the loading screen. The splash alone sold me on it before I even saw the in-game model, and that almost never happens with Epic tier skins.

What Broken Covenant Rakan actually brings

The whole vibe is dark church aesthetic mixed with shattered stained glass. Rakan’s feathered cape gets replaced with these torn, jagged wing shapes that have a deep violet and crimson palette. Looks like he walked out of a cathedral that collapsed on him. In the best way possible.

New VFX across the board. His W (Grand Entrance) leaves this cracked covenant sigil on the ground when he lands, and the knock-up effect has these glass shard particles flying outward. Looks clean in teamfights where you’re diving the backline. His E (Battle Dance) trails have that broken stained glass motif too, purples and reds streaking behind him as he dashes to his ADC. Not gonna lie, the E animation specifically might be the smoothest part of the whole skin.

Q poke in lane throws out this dark energy projectile that reads well against the Rift’s color palette. You can actually track the heal mark on your ally better than on some of his other skins, which matters when you’re trying to proc the heal during trades. The ult (The Quickness) gets a dark purple trail with shattered glass fragments, and it feels appropriately dramatic when you’re engaging on the enemy comp.

Recall animation is new. Rakan kneels before this broken covenant altar thing and it shatters around him. Short, punchy, fits the theme. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the skin doesnt really need it. The visual package carries.

The Broken Covenant line and where Rakan fits

Broken Covenant dropped March 9, 2023. Mid season 13. Marie Magny and West Studio handled the artwork, and they captured something genuinely unsettling with the splash. Rakan looks corrupted but still graceful, which is hard to pull off for a champion whose whole identity is being the charming dancer guy.

The Broken Covenant skinline includes Riven, Xayah, Miss Fortune, Nocturne, Cho’Gath, and Vladimir. Kinda feels like Riot wanted a “dark pact” theme and picked champions that would look good in gothic robes. Rakan and Xayah getting matching Broken Covenant skins makes sense given their duo identity. Been running this with my duo partner’s Broken Covenant Xayah in bot lane specifically and the shared recall interaction doesnt exist here like it does with some of their other paired skins, but the aesthetic cohesion is strong enough that it reads as a set.

8 chromas total. Obsidian is my personal pick, goes full dark mode and the stained glass particles shift to darker tones. Pearl flips the script entirely with a white and gold holy look that almost contradicts the skin’s theme (sidebar: Pearl chroma Rakan looking like he rejoined the covenant instead of breaking it). Tanzanite hits a deep purple that feels like the “true” version of the skin to me. The rest are fine but those three stand out.

Is Broken Covenant Rakan worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is a top three Rakan skin. Could be wrong here but I think it edges out Star Guardian for second place behind Elderwood. The dark aesthetic gives Rakan a completely different feel compared to his usual flashy colorful options, and if you main Rakan in ranked you know how nice it is to have a skin that doesnt scream “look at me” to the enemy jungler when you’re trying to set up ganking angles in river.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on every ability, solid recall, strong thematic direction. Spammed this in Diamond for maybe 30 games the week it came out and it never got old. The W engage specifically just looks and feels impactful in a way that some of his cheaper skins dont match.

Permanent shop, grab it whenever. If you’re a Rakan one-trick you probably already own this. If you’re picking up Rakan as a support flex pick for your ranked comp, this or Elderwood are the two I’d point you toward. Skip it only if you’re already committed to Star Guardian Rakan and dont want to split your attention (random aside: my muscle memory for the W flash combo genuinely feels different between skins and I cant explain why). The Broken Covenant line gave Rakan one of his most visually cohesive packages and at Epic pricing thats about all you can ask for. Solid skin. No notes.
