First game I played with Snow Moon Kayn was around 3 AM on a Tuesday, couple days after it dropped in June 2022. Locked it in for a ranked game, invaded their red buff, and immediately noticed how clean the scythe looked mid-swing. Not gonna lie, Kayn has a stacked skin lineup but this one carved out its own space for me pretty fast. The Snow Moon aesthetic just works on him in a way I wasnt expecting.
How Snow Moon Changes Kayn’s Kit
So the big thing with any Kayn skin is how it handles his two forms. Snow Moon Kayn delivers on both. Base form gets this cold silver and blue palette with frost-tinted particles on Q. The Reaping Slash feels sharper visually. Hard to explain but the trail it leaves behind has this icy mist that reads well in teamfights when you’re diving the backline.
Shadow Assassin form goes darker. The blue shifts to deep indigo with sharper frost edges on the VFX. Your W sends out this crescent blade effect that honestly looks better than some Legendary skins manage. Clean. Rhaast form leans into the heavier snow warrior vibe, red accents bleeding through the frost theme. The R animation in Rhaast form specifically, where you’re inside an enemy champion, has this satisfying ice shatter on exit.
New recall animation ties it together. Kayn does this focused meditation thing with frost swirling around the scythe. Been running this in Diamond for months and the recall alone gets comments in lobby chat. (Random aside: my duo partner started playing Kayn just because he saw my recall animation in a game.) Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is standard for a 1350 RP Epic tier skin. The voice filter situation is unchanged too, so you’re still hearing Robbie Daymond and Sam Mowry doing their thing from the base kit.
Kinda feels like Riot put extra attention into the particle work on this one compared to some other Epic skins from the same patch cycle. The jungle clear with Q feels noticeably different. Each camp you take, the frost particles layer onto the ground for a second. Small detail but it adds up over a full game.
The Snow Moon Line and Release Context
Snow Moon Kayn released June 23, 2022. Late into season 12 if I remember right, around the time everyone was spamming durability patch comps. Huyy Nguyen and West Studio handled the splash art, and they captured something specific here. The composition puts Kayn in this moonlit frost temple setting. Scythe raised. Cold blues everywhere. It reads like a boss fight splash more than a skin splash.
The Snow Moon skinline is one of Riot’s more restrained themes. No flashy pop colors, no over-the-top fantasy. Just cold precision. Caitlyn and Illaoi got Snow Moon skins too, and Kayn fits the line naturally. Maybe the best executed of the set honestly. The Eastern-inspired winter warrior concept lands harder on an assassin/bruiser than on a marksman.
4 chromas total. Obsidian is my go-to for Shadow Assassin games because the dark tones make you feel invisible pre-6 ganking through walls. Amethyst hits different on Rhaast, the purple clashes with the red in a way that shouldnt work but does. Meteorite has this earthy brown tone that I’ve seen maybe 3 times in my games all season. Ruby exists. Shop has it, permanent availability, 1350 RP.
Should You Pick Up Snow Moon Kayn?
Real verdict: if you’re a Kayn main or even someone who picks him as a secondary jungle option, Snow Moon is a strong contender. Could be wrong here but I think it sits comfortably in the top three Kayn skins. Nightbringer has the edge for pure spectacle and the prestige version flexes harder. But Snow Moon at 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX quality punches above its price point.
Been daily driving this for most of season 13 and into 14. Played maybe 200 games with it across both forms. Shadow Assassin form benefits more from the skin than Rhaast does, the frost particles on E when you’re walking through walls look incredible. That ranked game where my Kayn inted into three people at dragon pit, at least I looked good doing it.
Skip it if you already own Nightbringer and dont jungle often. But for Kayn mains climbing through Diamond who want something cleaner and less edgy than the Nightbringer aesthetic, Snow Moon is the pick. 1350 RP well spent for mains. The skin just holds up game after game without getting old, which is more than I can say for some Legendaries at twice the price.
