Mad Scientist Ziggs

First time I saw Mad Scientist Ziggs in a loading screen I thought somebody modded the game. February 2012 feels like ancient history now but this skin still holds up in a weird way. Not gonna lie, the mad scientist fantasy on a yordle who already throws bombs is almost too on the nose. Perfect fit though.

What actually changes on Mad Scientist Ziggs

So this is a 975 RP Standard tier skin. No new voice lines, base VO stays. No recall animation either, which makes sense for the era. What you get is a full model swap and thats about it. Ziggs rocks this green chemical-stained lab coat, goggles pushed up on his forehead, and his bombs get redesigned into these bubbling chemical flasks. The color palette shifts hard from his base orange into toxic greens and purples.

The Q still arcs the same way but the bouncing bomb looks like a volatile chemistry experiment. Kinda feels like Riot wanted to lean into the Singed energy here. His W, the satchel charge, keeps the base particles but the model change alone makes it read differently in lane. E mines scattered across bot lane during a teamfight look like somebody spilled a chemistry set. Clean stuff.

Been running this skin in Diamond games for years on and off. The auto attack animation with those little flask projectiles has a satisfying weight to it even without custom VFX. Could be wrong here but I think the hitbox visual on Q reads slightly different with the flask shape compared to base, just perception though. Nothing mechanical changes obviously.

(Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I use this skin because he says the green bombs blend into the Rift grass and he cant tell where my E is. Skill issue.)

The Mad Scientists line and where this fits

Mad Scientist Ziggs dropped February 1, 2012. Early season 2 if memory serves. Alex Konstad nailed the splash, the composition with Ziggs holding up that glowing flask while his lab explodes behind him captures the whole vibe in one frame. The Mad Scientists skinline is pretty small, think it’s just Ziggs and Singed in there. Two poison-adjacent champs doing chemistry crimes on the Rift.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which honestly is fine for a 2012 release at 975 RP. Shop has it permanently so you can grab it whenever. Voice pack is base only but Ziggs already has solid voice lines so that doesnt bother me much. His default VO has enough manic energy to match the scientist theme anyway.

For context on the era, this came out before Riot started doing custom recalls or VFX on anything below Legendary. Season 2 was a different world. I think back then 975 RP actually got you a decent amount of work compared to what some 975 skins look like today. The model quality on Mad Scientist Ziggs holds up better than a lot of its peers from that year.

Should you pick up Mad Scientist Ziggs

Real verdict: if you play Ziggs regularly this is a solid pickup. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. Not the flashiest Ziggs skin in 2026, sure. Master Arcanist and Battle Boss both have custom particles that Mad Scientist cant compete with on a technical level. But there’s something about the simplicity here.

Played maybe 30 games with it last week specifically to write about it. The green flask bombs poking from mid lane just hit different at 2 AM when you’re spamming Q on the wave trying to shove for a roam timer. Best budget Ziggs skin full stop. The competition at this price point is basically Major Ziggs which leans military instead of chaotic, and I think chaotic fits Ziggs better as a champion identity.

Skip this if you already own Hextech or Odyssey Ziggs. Those are upgrades in every way. But for someone building a Ziggs collection or a one-trick looking for variety in their rotation, Mad Scientist earns its spot. Permanent shop availability means no rush. Worth it. Pick it up next time you have leftover RP from a bundle purchase, that’s what I did back in season 9 I think or 10 dont remember exactly.
