First time I saw Guardian of the Sands Ryze load in, I thought someone was running a custom skin. The sand and gold aesthetic just hits so different from anything else in his catalog. Been maining Ryze with this one equipped for a solid chunk of season 10 and honestly kept coming back to it even after picking up newer options. Not gonna lie, the desert guardian fantasy fits Ryze way better than it has any right to.

What the skin actually changes

So this is an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP, which means new VFX across the board and a fresh recall animation. Voice lines stay base, no VO refresh. Standard for the price point.

The model itself turns Ryze into this armored sand guardian covered in golden trim and turquoise accents. His scroll becomes this ancient-looking tablet thing. Clean design. The Q overcharge bolts come out in sandy gold particles instead of the usual blue, and theres a distinct gritty texture to the trails that I appreciate in lane. Feels weighty.

W root circle trades the arcane purple for a sand trap visual. Looks like the ground is cracking and pulling your target down. In teamfights its actually easier to track than base Ryze W, which is a genuine gameplay clarity upgrade. His E spread reads as these sand wisps jumping between targets. Not the flashiest effect but it works. Could be wrong here but I think the spread particles are slightly more visible than default, which helps when you’re trying to confirm the bounce landed on the backline.

The R portal. This is where it gets good. Instead of the blue realm warp circle you get this massive sand vortex with golden runes spinning around the edge. Had a ranked game last February where I ulted my whole team into dragon pit and the enemy Kayn literally typed “that looked sick” in all chat. The recall has Ryze channeling sand energy and constructing a miniature pyramid before warping out. Short and sweet, doesnt overstay its welcome.

The Guardian of the Sands line and release context

Guardian of the Sands Ryze dropped January 22, 2020. Mid-season 10. The Guardian of the Sands skinline is one of Riot’s older thematic lines and it works best on mage-type champions. Ryze slots in naturally next to the Xerath and Rammus versions.

David Villegas and West Studio handled the splash. They cooked on this one. The composition has Ryze floating above desert ruins with sand swirling around him, scroll glowing. Portfolio-worthy piece honestly. (Random aside: I used the centered splash as my Discord banner for like three months straight.)

6 chromas total for Guardian of the Sands Ryze. Obsidian turns the whole thing dark and menacing, basically an entirely different vibe from the base golden look. Amethyst swaps the turquoise accents for purple which ironically makes him look closer to default Ryze coloring but in armor. The rest fill out the collection but those two stood out to me the most after cycling through them in practice tool one night around 1 AM.

Should you buy Guardian of the Sands Ryze?

Real verdict: 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX overhaul is solid across every ability, the model is clean, and the recall animation adds personality without being overkill. Ryze has a lot of skins at this point. Zombie Ryze and Dark Crystal compete in the “cool factor” department, and SKT T1 has the esports prestige angle. But Guardian of the Sands Ryze occupies its own lane visually.

Might be overthinking it but I think the sand VFX actually read better in hectic teamfight scenarios than his base spell effects. That alone kept this in my rotation through Diamond. The golden particles pop against Summoner’s Rift green without being distracting. Shop has it permanently, so no rush, but if you’re a Ryze main looking for something that feels premium without dropping Legendary money this is the pick. Spammed this in ranked for weeks and never got tired of the Q animation. Top pick for Ryze mains who want clean visuals at a reasonable price point. Season 10 energy, still holds up in 2026.
