First time I saw Emerald Taric in a loading screen was maybe season 3, and I remember thinking somebody modded their client. Green Taric just looked wrong in the best way. Not gonna lie, this skin has a weird charm that newer Taric skins cant replicate no matter how hard they try.
What actually changes on Emerald Taric
This is a Standard tier skin at 520 RP so temper expectations. You get a full recolor of Taric’s armor from the classic blue-purple palette into deep emerald green and gold trim. The gems on his shield and hammer shift to green too, which sounds simple but reads surprisingly clean on the Rift. No new VFX. No new recall animation. Voice lines stay base. Yuri Lowenthal’s VO carries through unchanged.
Honestly the green and gold combo hits harder than it should for a texture swap. In my Diamond games I notice the hammer specifically looks more distinct against the default Summoner’s Rift terrain compared to base Taric, where the blue-purple blends into river fights. Small thing. Might be overthinking it but the contrast matters when you’re trying to track your own character in a messy teamfight around dragon pit.
Been running this skin in support for maybe 40 games last month. The W shield aura doesnt change color which is a missed opportunity, still the standard Taric blue. E stun is the same. R invulnerability still has the default golden effect. For a 520 RP recolor from 2009 though, expecting VFX changes would be unreasonable. Riot wasnt doing that for skins at this price point back then.
The Elderwood connection and release history
Emerald Taric released November 20, 2009. That’s pre-season 1. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen handled the artwork, and for a splash from that era it holds up okay. Not their best work but it communicates the green gem fantasy clearly enough.
Technically tagged under the Elderwood skinline which feels like a retroactive classification. The original design predates the Elderwood thematic by years. Riot probably bucketed it there because green plus gems plus nature-adjacent vibes. (Random aside: the Elderwood line has some of the best skins in the game and Emerald Taric is absolutely not one of them, but the association is funny.)
Legacy vault skin so you cant just grab it from the shop whenever. Sits in the vault and comes out during special Legacy sales or you roll it from Hextech crafting. Seen maybe two of these in my games all season, which honestly adds to the appeal. Last Tuesday in a ranked game my ADC pinged my skin like three times in fountain. Nobody expects green Taric in Diamond.
Should you pick up Emerald Taric
Real verdict: if you main Taric and want something different from the base look without spending 1350 or 1820 RP, Emerald Taric is a solid budget option. 520 RP is nothing. The green recolor looks clean, the gold trim adds personality, and the Legacy status means you wont see it on every other support player climbing through ranked.
The competition is stiff though. Pool Party Taric exists. Taric Luminshield exists. Both offer way more for the price bump. Kinda feels like Emerald Taric is for collectors and old-school Taric one-tricks who want the vintage flex. If you’re picking one Taric skin and only one, this probably isnt it unless you specifically love the green aesthetic or you got it from a chest and dont want to spend more.
For peel-heavy comps where you’re locking in Taric to protect your backline carry, any skin works. But there’s something about the green armor that makes the pre-6 lane phase feel different. Placebo probably. Still, 520 RP well spent for mains who want variety in their skin rotation.
