EDG Aphelios

Locked in EDG Aphelios the day it dropped and honestly not gonna lie, the skin hit harder than I expected for a Worlds skin. Most esports skins feel like glorified chromas with a team logo slapped on. This one actually carries weight. Aphelios already has that brooding aesthetic going for him, and the EDG black and red color scheme fits the champion like it was designed for him from the start. Played maybe 30 games with it that first week in Diamond and the VFX alone kept me coming back.

What the EDG skin actually changes

The new VFX are the standout here. Severum healing shots have this clean red particle trail that reads way better in teamfights than base Aphelios. Infernum’s flamethrower Q feels crunchier visually, the spread has EDG red highlights that pop against the Rift. Gravitum and Crescendum get similar treatment with dark accents and sharp red energy. Not a complete overhaul but enough that you notice it every time you swap weapons.

Calibrum shots specifically look sharp. The long range poke has this red tracer effect that makes landing Q from fog of war feel more satisfying. Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack animations on Calibrum feel slightly snappier too, though thats probably placebo.

The recall animation is where Riot put the real effort. Aphelios holds up the Summoner’s Cup with EDG branding, Alune appears behind him in that spectral form she does. Clean moment. Seen maybe 5 of these in my ranked games all season because Legacy vault means almost nobody has it anymore. Every time I use the recall in lane the enemy ADC just stands there watching.

Voice lines stay base. Standard for a 1350 RP Epic tier skin, and honestly Aphelios barely talks anyway so it doesnt matter. Tania Gunadi’s VO as Alune still comes through on the weapon swaps. No filter, no changes. Fine.

The Worlds 2021 line and release context

EDG Aphelios released May 12, 2022 as part of the World Champions: 2021 set celebrating Edward Gaming’s championship run. Bo ‘chenbowow’ Chen nailed the splash. The composition puts Aphelios center frame with EDG’s signature black and crimson palette, Alune ghosting in the background. Portfolio piece level work.

The World Champions 2021 skinline dropped during season 12. Late spring 2022 if I remember right, around MSI time. EDG’s roster got skins for their Worlds-winning picks and Aphelios was the obvious ADC choice given how Viper played him that tournament. (Random aside: Viper’s Aphelios that series against DK is still some of the best ADC play I’ve watched live.)

One Elite chroma available. Dark navy base with deeper red accents, basically the “prestige” version of the EDG colorway. Looks clean but the base skin already nails the color scheme so hard that the Elite chroma feels redundant. Sits in the Legacy pool now so you need to roll it from chests or wait for a vault opening.

Should you pick up EDG Aphelios?

Real verdict: this is a solid mid-tier Aphelios skin that punches above its weight class. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX refresh on all five weapons is noticeable in game, the recall is one of the better esports recalls Riot has done, and the color palette works naturally on Aphelios without looking forced.

Been maining Aphelios with this skin on and off since season 12. It sits in rotation alongside Spirit Blossom and Nightbringer for me. If you’re an Aphelios one-trick who cares about esports history, this is a must-have. The Viper connection alone gives it sentimental value that most Epic skins cant match.

Problem is availability. Legacy vault skin means you cant just buy it. Need to get lucky with Hextech crafting or catch a rare vault rotation. If it shows up in Your Shop or a reroll, take it. Skip rerolling skin shards hoping for it specifically though. Not worth the orange essence gamble when Aphelios has other strong options sitting permanently in the shop. But if it lands in your lap during a late night loot opening like it did for me back around 2 AM one Tuesday? Keep it. No question.
