First time I saw Battle Boss Qiyana load in, I thought Riot had finally figured out how to make a video game skin that actually feels like a video game. Qiyana already has that flashy, aggressive kit that demands attention in lane, and wrapping her in this pixel-art arcade aesthetic just makes the whole package click. Spammed this in Diamond for a solid two weeks after release and wasnt disappointed. The colors pop, the animations read clean, and the 8-bit sound design on her abilities is the kind of detail that keeps you locked in.

The Arcade Treatment on Qiyana’s Kit

So the big selling point here is the VFX overhaul. Every element swap on her W gets a distinct retro color palette. Grass element goes neon green with pixel particles, river element shifts to this bright blue arcade water effect, and wall element crunches into blocky orange-red textures. Her Q projectile leaves behind little pixel trails that dissolve mid-flight. Clean stuff.

The recall animation is where they went hardest. Qiyana sits down at an arcade cabinet and starts mashing buttons. Not gonna lie, I’ve let the recall play out in base more times than I should admit during ranked games. The whole thing feels like a love letter to 90s fighting games.

Her ult sends out this massive pixel shockwave that honestly reads better than base in teamfights. When you’re diving the backline and proc the river stun into R, the visual feedback is immediate. You know exactly where the hitbox ends. Played maybe 40 games with this skin last season and the R clarity alone made it worth keeping in rotation. Her E dash gets subtle pixel sparks too, nothing crazy but it ties the theme together.

Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Standard for an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP. Kinda feels like Riot could have added a voice filter at minimum, something to match the arcade beeps, but the sound effects on abilities compensate enough that I dont hold it against the skin too hard.

Arcade: Battle Bosses and the Release Window

Battle Boss Qiyana dropped June 28, 2019. Right when Qiyana herself launched. Jennifer Wuestling handled the artwork, and the splash captures the vibe perfectly. Qiyana’s sitting on this throne of arcade cabinets looking like she owns the place. Very on-brand for the character.

The Arcade: Battle Bosses line is one of Riot’s older thematic sets. You got Battle Boss Veigar, Brand, Malzahar, Ziggs in there. Qiyana fits the villain energy naturally. She already acts like she’s better than everyone on the Rift, so making her a literal final boss works. (Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play against this skin because the Q sound effect tilts him.)

7 chromas total for this one. Obsidian is my pick, the dark color scheme makes the pixel VFX contrast harder against the model. K.O. chroma has this wild cyan-and-purple gradient that reads almost like an alt universe version of the skin. Ruby exists but honestly it blends into the base Qiyana palette too much for my taste. Could be wrong here but I think most people sleep on Sapphire, the deep blue works better than you’d expect on Qiyana’s silhouette.

Where Battle Boss Qiyana Sits in the Lineup

Qiyana has some strong competition in her skin catalog now. True Damage exists. Battle Queen exists. But Battle Boss Qiyana holds a specific niche: if you want something colorful and playful without the high-fashion energy of her other options, this is it.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on every ability, solid recall, distinct sound design. Shop has it, permanent availability. Not a vault skin, not loot exclusive. You can grab it whenever.

Real talk though, the skin aged well. Some 2019 releases look dated by now but the pixel art style is timeless by design. Played a game with it last Thursday around midnight and it still holds up against newer Epic skins. The W element swaps alone carry more visual identity than half the 1350 skins released in season 13.

Been maining Qiyana with this on and off since season 10 I think. The skin doesn’t change how she plays obviously, but the audio feedback on Q poke in lane gives you this satisfying crunch that base Qiyana just doesn’t have. Pre-6 trading pattern feels snappier with the arcade hit sounds. Might be overthinking it but I swear the sound design makes you want to press buttons more aggressively.

Should you buy it?

If you’re a Qiyana main climbing through ranked, Battle Boss is the budget pick that punches above its weight. True Damage has the prestige factor and Battle Queen has the legendary-adjacent polish, but this Epic skin delivers more personality per RP than either. Overpriced? No. Best Qiyana skin? Probably not. But it’s the one I keep coming back to when I want something fun without the tryhard energy.

Worth 1350 RP if you main Qiyana. Skip it if you only play her in ARAM once a month. For one-tricks and Qiyana mains specifically, this belongs in rotation. Top three Qiyana skin easy, and the chromas give you enough variety to keep it fresh across a full season of solo queue.
