First time I saw Battle Boss Brand load in, I thought someone modded the game. The whole pixel-fire aesthetic caught me off guard in a Diamond ranked game around 2 AM on a Saturday. Been playing Brand on and off since season 4, and this skin shifted how I feel about him as a champion. Not gonna lie, the 8-bit villain fantasy just works on a dude who throws fire at people for a living.
The pixel fire actually slaps
So the VFX on this one. Every ability got the retro arcade treatment and it shows. Q is this chunky pixelated fireball that reads clean in lane. Feels like throwing a Pac-Man ghost at someone. The W ground indicator has that old-school grid pattern, and the explosion pops with blocky fire particles that I think look better than most of Brand’s other skins.
E spread looks sharp. When the blaze passive procs off your E onto nearby targets in a teamfight, the pixel flames jumping between enemies actually help me track the spread better than base Brand. Could be wrong here but I swear the visual clarity is improved even if Riot says its all the same hitboxes.
The R bounce is the highlight. Big pixelated fireball bouncing between the backline in a clustered fight. Watched it delete a Kog’Maw and Soraka last Tuesday in a dragon pit teamfight and the visual was clean. Each bounce has this satisfying retro pop to it.
Recall animation puts Brand at an arcade cabinet. Classic Riot humor. He rages at the game and smashes it. Pretty standard recall gag but it fits the skin’s personality. Voice lines stay base, no new VO on this one. For an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP thats expected. The sound effects carry the weight here instead.
Arcade Battle Bosses and the 2017 drop
Released August 8, 2017. Right in the middle of the Arcade event that year. Rudy Siswanto nailed the splash, the composition with Brand floating above the arcade world looking like a final boss is exactly what the skin needed. The pose sells the power fantasy hard.
Part of the Arcade: Battle Bosses skinline. The villain side of Riot’s arcade universe. Brand fits naturally as a boss character. Fire mage with anger issues? That’s a final boss archetype from every SNES game I grew up on. The line includes other heavyweights like Battle Boss Malzahar and Blitzcrank, but Brand might be the best executed of the set.
No chromas on this one. Zero. Which honestly feels like a missed opportunity given how well the pixel art style could adapt to different color palettes. Imagine a blue-flame variant or a green poison-pixel version. Riot left RP on the table here.
(Random aside: the splash art was my Discord avatar for like six months straight. Nobody questioned it.)
Where it sits in Brand’s skin lineup
Brand has a solid roster these days. Zombie Brand exists as the Legendary option. Eternal Dragon went the fantasy route. Spirit Fire Brand is the budget pick. Battle Boss sits in a weird sweet spot where it’s the most visually distinct skin in his catalog without being the most expensive.
Been running this in Diamond for multiple seasons now and the skin doesnt get old. The retro aesthetic ages well because pixel art is timeless. Compare that to something like Cryocore Brand which looked dated within a year. The arcade style has staying power.
Might be overthinking it but I think the VFX on Battle Boss actually help with gameplay. The pixel particles are crisp and distinct. In a chaotic teamfight where you need to track your passive stacks and ult bounces, the blocky effects stand out against the Rift’s natural textures. Season 7 or 8 I think when I first noticed this, been maining Brand support with this skin ever since.
Should you buy it?
Straight talk: 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on every ability, solid recall, cohesive theme. You’re not getting new voice lines or a model transformation, but the visual overhaul is thorough enough that it plays like a different champion.
If you main Brand mid or support, this is a top two skin alongside Zombie. Zombie has the VO advantage and the Legendary polish, but Battle Boss has more personality in the VFX department. Shop has it permanently, no vault rotation to worry about.
Skip this if you already own Zombie Brand and only play him occasionally. But for Brand one-tricks and anyone who grew up on arcade games, this skin hits the intersection of nostalgia and quality. Played maybe 200 games with it across two seasons and I keep coming back over newer options like Debonair or Empyrean. The pixel fire is just built different.
