Not gonna lie, the first time I saw Alien Invader Heimerdinger load into a game I thought someone was running a custom skin mod. This thing looks like it crawled straight out of a 1950s B-movie poster and honestly thats part of the charm. Been playing Heimerdinger on and off since season 3 and this skin still gets comments in all chat when I pull it out in Diamond lobbies. Rare enough that most people forget it exists.

What the Invaders skin actually changes

So here’s the deal with Alien Invader Heimerdinger. It’s a Legendary from 2010. July 13, 2010 to be exact. That means it comes from an era where Riot’s definition of “Legendary” was wildly different from what we expect now. You get new VFX on the turrets and abilities, which at the time was a big deal. The Q turrets look like little alien laser cannons and the rockets on W have this green sci-fi energy trail that reads pretty clean even on the modern Rift.

The E stun grenade becomes some kind of alien tech orb. Kinda feels like Heimerdinger is throwing a miniature UFO at people. In teamfights the green particle effects actually stand out against most map textures, which is a genuine gameplay clarity win. Had a ranked game last week where I trapped their Jinx between two turrets at dragon pit and the green lasers firing off looked absurd.

Voice lines stay base though. No new VO, which for a Legendary at 1820 RP feels rough by today’s standards. Back in 2010 nobody batted an eye at that. Now? You compare this to Dragon Trainer Heimerdinger and the gap is massive. The model itself turns Heimerdinger into a green-skinned alien with big eyes and a ray gun aesthetic. Think Mars Attacks meets League of Legends. The turrets specifically are the highlight, they look like proper alien defense systems.

No new recall animation either. Remember, pre-2012 Legendaries just hit different in terms of what you got for your RP. The VFX carry the skin. Period.

The Invaders line and where this skin sits

Alien Invader Heimerdinger belongs to the Invaders skinline. Released July 13, 2010, deep in the early days of League. (Random aside: I’m pretty sure this was one of the first skins I ever saw on a loading screen when I started playing, it burned into my memory.) The Invaders theme is this retro alien invasion concept that Riot barely touched. Feels like a forgotten experiment.

This is a Legacy vault skin. Hextech only these days unless Riot decides to open the vault for some event. Might be overthinking it but I think the scarcity actually works in its favor. Seen maybe two or three Alien Invader Heimerdinger players in my games across all of last season. Maybe one was in a normal game around 11 PM on a Tuesday.

No splash artist credited in the data, which tracks for skins from that era. Riot wasnt exactly documenting their art pipeline back then. The splash itself has that old school painted look, Heimerdinger floating in a UFO cockpit with this maniacal alien grin. It’s aged, sure, but it has character that the modern corporate splash style sometimes lacks.

Zero chromas on this one. Not surprising for a Legacy Legendary from 2010. Riot doesn’t typically go back and add chromas to vault skins, especially ones this old.

Playing Alien Invader in ranked

Locked in this skin for about 30 games this season specifically to write about it. Here’s what I noticed: the green VFX on turrets make it slightly easier to track which turrets are yours in a chaotic teamfight. Could be wrong here but I think the contrast against the Summoner’s Rift ground textures is better than base Heimerdinger’s yellow-gold particles. When you’re setting up turrets for lane prio or zoning off a jungle entrance pre-6, the visual clarity matters.

The W rockets in particular look clean. Green energy bolts instead of the standard rockets. When you’re poking from backline in a comp that needs Heimerdinger to zone, those green trails crossing the screen just look right. My duo partner who plays ADC said the skin “looks like it costs money” which I think was a compliment.

One thing that bugs me: the auto attack animation feels slightly different in timing. Not actually different, I checked, but the alien ray gun visual makes it feel like the projectile speed changed. Took me about five games to stop second-guessing my cs rhythm. Season 10 I think, or maybe 11, I had the same issue switching between Pool Party and base Heimerdinger.

Should you spend 1820 RP on this?

Real verdict: Alien Invader Heimerdinger is a nostalgia piece. If you’re a Heimerdinger one-trick looking for collector status, this is the flex skin. Nobody has it. The Invaders fantasy is unique in Heimerdinger’s catalog and nothing else in his lineup touches this aesthetic.

But real talk though. For 1820 RP in 2026, you’re getting a skin with no new voice lines, no recall animation, and VFX that were impressive sixteen years ago. Dragon Trainer Heimerdinger exists at the same price point and absolutely demolishes this in feature count. If you only own one Legendary Heimerdinger skin, Dragon Trainer wins and it’s not close.

The saving grace is the Legacy vault status. You cant just buy this whenever you want. If it shows up in your Hextech crafting or during a vault opening event, I’d say grab it. Worth 1820 RP if you main Heimerdinger and care about having the rare stuff. For everyone else spamming Heimer in Diamond or climbing through Plat, Dragon Trainer is the practical choice. Alien Invader is the “I’ve been here since the beginning” choice. Both valid. Different energy.
