Garen

Garen Skins

16 skins available

Garen might be the first champion half the playerbase ever touched, and his skin catalog reflects that journey from 2010 starter pick to full-blown Demacian icon. Sixteen skins deep now. Some of them are genuine bangers that change how spinning feels on the Rift, and some are budget textures from an era where Riot was still figuring out what a skin even meant. Been maining Garen on and off since season 4, mostly as a top lane comfort pick when I dont feel like thinking too hard in ranked. His skins range from "why does this exist" to "this might be the coolest thing in the game." Big spread.

How Garen's Skin Collection Grew Over the Years

Sixteen skins across fourteen years. That's a solid catalog for any champion, and Garen earned every one of them by being the poster boy for Demacia and the go-to recommendation for new players. His first batch dropped between 2010 and 2012: Sanguine Garen, Desert Trooper Garen, Commando Garen, and Dreadknight Garen. All Standard tier. All pretty basic by today's standards. Texture swaps with maybe a new sword model if you squint. Worth it?

Not really. But they have that nostalgic charm.

The real upgrades started hitting around 2013 with Steel Legion Garen. That was the first Epic skin where Riot actually put work into the particles. New E spin effects, armored up model, the whole deal. Felt like a different champion honestly. Then Rogue Admiral Garen came with the Bilgewater event, Warring Kingdoms Garen dropped for Lunar Revel, and things kept building. Could be wrong here but I think the Warring Kingdoms skin was when people started taking Garen cosmetics seriously.

The tier breakdown tells you where the value sits: six Standard skins from the early days, seven Epics that range from decent to great, one Legendary that's genuinely S-tier, and two Mythic skins for the collectors. Price range runs from 520 RP for the old budget options up to 1820 RP for God-King. Played maybe 200 games with God-King alone last season. No regrets.

2024 brought Fallen God-King Garen and Visions of the Fallen Garen, expanding the God-King fantasy into darker territory. Garen went from six skins in his first five years to sixteen total by 2024. Riot clearly knows he sells. (Random aside: I checked my purchase history once and Garen skins account for like a third of my RP spending. Not proud.)

Best Skins for Garen

God-King Garen. Full stop. This Legendary skin at 1820 RP is the definitive Garen experience and honestly one of the best Legendaries in the entire game. The lion motif runs through everything. His Q empowers the sword with this golden divine energy that feels heavy when it connects. W shield gets a massive lion crest visual. E spin has these trailing golden particles that make the Judgment animation look three times more impactful than base. And the R? The giant sword drops from the sky with a lion's roar. Been spamming this in Diamond since season 9 I think and it still doesnt get old.

New voice lines too. Garen sounds like an actual god-king instead of a guy yelling about Demacia every two seconds. The interactions with Darius specifically are chef's kiss.

Steel Legion Garen is the best Epic option and it's not particularly close. Released back in 2013 but the armored future-soldier look holds up. The E spin has electrical crackling effects, his ult sword comes down with lightning, and the overall silhouette reads as "don't mess with this toplaner." At 1350 RP it punches way above its weight. Locked in this skin for most of season 6 and 7 before God-King dropped.

Warring Kingdoms Garen deserves the third spot. The Lunar Revel treatment fits Garen's warrior fantasy perfectly. Red and gold color scheme, ornate armor design, and the recall animation has this sick martial arts pose. Kinda feels like Riot designed the entire Warring Kingdoms line with Garen in mind even though he wasnt the first champion in it.

Mecha Kingdoms Garen is solid if you're into the mech aesthetic. Big robot Garen with a massive sword. The Prestige version cranks the gold accents up and adds that exclusive feel. Not my personal style but I've seen plenty of Garen one-tricks in my games running the Prestige version. Respect the flex.

Battle Academia Garen surprised me. Didn't expect the anime school setting to work for a champion this straightforward but the younger design and the academy uniform give him a completely different personality. Good VFX on the abilities too. Took this into ranked for about 30 games last split and got compliments on it twice. That never happens with Garen skins.

Skinlines and Themes That Fit Garen

Garen shows up in a bunch of skinlines but not all of them hit the same. The Battle of the God-Kings line is obviously his best thematic home. The entire skinline was built around the Garen vs Darius rivalry and it shows in every detail. If you played during that event in 2018 you remember the missions, the faction choice, all of it. Peak League event design honestly.

Steel Legion works because Garen's already a soldier. Putting him in futuristic armor is a natural extension. Not gonna lie, when I first saw Steel Legion back in the day I thought it was a Legendary because the quality jump from his base skin was that dramatic.

Warring Kingdoms fits the warrior archetype too. Garen swinging a massive blade in ornate East Asian inspired armor just clicks. The Commando and Dreadknights lines are from a different era entirely. They're fine for what they are but Riot wasn't really doing thematic depth in 2010.

Rift Quest Garen (the RPG themed one) is an interesting outlier. Turning Garen into a literal RPG knight with Rugged Garen's adventurer look adds some humor to a champion who's usually played straight. Might be overthinking it but I think the contrast between Garen's serious personality and the more lighthearted skinlines creates some of his best cosmetic moments. Demacia Vice Garen is another example. 80s cop Garen with the aviators and the pastel suit? Hilarious. Played it exclusively for a week around 3 AM sessions just for the vibes.

Mythmaker Garen from the 2023 Lunar New Year event rounds out his more recent skinline appearances. The crafted mask aesthetic gives him a theatrical presence that's different from his usual "charge in and spin" energy on the Rift.

Budget vs Premium: Where to Spend on Garen

Real talk though. If you're climbing ranked as a Garen main and want one skin, buy God-King. 1820 RP for the best Garen experience in the game. New model, new VFX on every ability, new voice lines, new animations. It earns the Legendary price tag.

If 1820 RP is too steep, Steel Legion at 1350 is the move. Best value Garen skin in the shop. The particle effects on E and R alone justify the price. Warring Kingdoms at 1350 is a close second if you prefer the aesthetic.

For budget players, Dreadknight Garen at 975 RP gives you a solid dark knight look without breaking the bank. The model update is noticeable even if the VFX are mostly base. Used to be my default before I could afford Epics. Sanguine and Desert Trooper at 520 RP are basically chromas by modern standards. Texture changes only. Skip unless you're a completionist.

The two Mythic skins, Prestige Mecha Kingdoms and Fallen God-King, aren't purchasable with RP directly. Gotta grind events or get lucky with loot. They're collector pieces. Cool to have, not essential. (Sidebar for Garen mains specifically: God-King base version already does everything these Mythics do in terms of in-game feel. The Mythics are about the flex, not the gameplay experience.)

Standard pricing across his catalog is fair. Seven Epics at 1350 each, six Standards ranging 520-975. Nothing feels overpriced for what you get. Garen's not a champion where Riot cut corners on skins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Garen have?

Sixteen skins total as of 2024. That includes six Standard tier, seven Epic, one Legendary (God-King), and two Mythic variants. Pretty loaded catalog for a champion thats been around since beta. Not every skin is worth owning but there's enough quality options that you wont feel limited picking one or two favorites.

What is the best Garen skin?

God-King Garen. Not even close. The Legendary treatment gave him new everything: model, VFX, voice lines, animations. The lion theme runs through every ability and the ult is one of the most satisfying executes in the game visually. Been my go-to Garen skin since it dropped in 2018. 1820 RP well spent for mains.

What is the cheapest Garen skin?

Sanguine Garen and Desert Trooper Garen both sit at 520 RP. They're old school texture swaps from 2010 with no new particles or animations. Basically chromas before chromas existed. Fine if you want something different from base on a budget but don't expect much. Dreadknight at 975 is the better budget pick honestly.

Does Garen have a Legendary skin?

One Legendary: God-King Garen at 1820 RP. Part of the Battle of the God-Kings event from 2018 where you picked sides between Garen and Darius. Complete overhaul with new model, VFX, VO, and animations. S-tier Legendary. Also has two Mythic skins if you count those as premium tier, Prestige Mecha Kingdoms and Fallen God-King.

What skinlines is Garen in?

Garen appears in a bunch: Commando, Dreadknights, Steel Legion, Bilgewater Burning Tides, Warring Kingdoms, Battle of the God-Kings, Demacia Vice, Mecha Kingdoms, Battle Academia, Rift Quest, and Mythmaker. The God-Kings line is his flagship. Steel Legion and Warring Kingdoms are fan favorites too. Solid variety across themes.

Does Garen have chromas?

Several of his newer skins have chromas. Warring Kingdoms, Mecha Kingdoms, Battle Academia, and Mythmaker Garen all come with chroma options. If you want variety without buying a whole new skin, chromas on Battle Academia or Mythmaker give you solid color swaps. The Ruby chroma on Battle Academia hits different in my ranked games.

When was Garen's last skin released?

Fallen God-King Garen and Visions of the Fallen Garen both dropped in 2024. They're Mythic tier skins expanding the God-King universe into darker territory. Before that, Mythmaker Garen came in 2023. Riot keeps Garen in regular rotation for new releases. Being the face of Demacia has its perks I guess.

Is Garen worth buying skins for?

If you play him regularly, absolutely. God-King alone justifies investing in Garen cosmetics. He's a champion you'll always come back to when you want a simple, reliable top lane pick for climbing. Grinded ranked with this champ through three seasons and the skins keep the experience fresh. Even the cheaper ones change the vibe enough to matter.
