The crests changed with Riot’s Champion Mastery rework in patch 14.10 (May 14, 2024). That update removed the old cap at level 7, added new crests for levels 8 to 10, and introduced “an infinitely scaling representation” of your level beyond 10, so your number keeps climbing on the crest.

How do you unlock sigils in League of Legends?

Raise your Champion Mastery level. Riot’s support guide on Champion Mastery (updated July 31, 2025) sets out two currencies: Mastery Points for experience and Marks of Mastery for achievement.

Levels 1 to 4 come quickly from normal play. From level 5 the Marks become the real gate, because points alone won’t move you up. At level 10 you also unlock the champion’s title, which you can show on your profile permanently.

There’s no maximum. Riot’s guide says it directly: no maximum level exists, and progression continues indefinitely. That’s where the “infinite” crest comes from.

How do you earn Mastery Points?

By playing often and playing well. Riot says points depend on “your performance, your team’s performance, the length of the game, whether you win or lose, and a few other factors.” You earn them in every matchmaking queue: Summoner’s Rift normals (Swiftplay and Draft), ranked, ARAM and rotating game modes.

Premades get a small boost. Riot lists +2% for two players, +4% for three, +6% for four and +10% for a full five-stack. Want the fastest points? Play long, well-fought games with friends on a champion you know, honestly that’s the whole trick.

Custom games and the Practice Tool don’t count, since they aren’t matchmade. Co-op vs AI is matchmade too.

The catch: it’s a low-reward way to grind, so treat it as practice for the champion rather than a shortcut to the next crest.

How do you earn Marks of Mastery?

Through Season Milestones, which reward high grades. Every game in a mode with grades (Summoner’s Rift and ARAM) gives you a grade from D up to S+, based on how you played that champion in that match.

• A milestone with a grade of A- or better gives 1 Mark.
• S- or better on a milestone gives 2 Marks.
• From milestone 5 onward, Riot asks for two grades of S- or better for a single Mark.

The catch is that milestones only track grades in Summoner’s Rift and ARAM. Rotating modes still give Mastery Points, but they won’t help you toward Marks, so they can’t take you past level 5 on their own.

Grades compare you with other players on the same champion and role, so farm, vision, objectives and kill participation all feed in, and a good grade on a support looks very different from a good grade on a carry: a support with low gold but excellent vision and assists can grade higher than a carry who farmed well and still threw the game, which is why chasing kills alone rarely earns the S- grades that the later milestones ask for. Your grade shows on the post-game screen after every match, so you always know where you stand.

How many games does it take to unlock the level 10 sigil in LoL?

It depends on how well you play, so Riot doesn’t give a number. The points side is predictable: levels 1 to 4 need 6,600 points in total, and each level from 5 upward needs between 9,000 and 11,000 more. The Marks side is what varies, because you need nine Marks in total to go from level 5 to level 10, and each one depends on strong grades.

In practice, a player who earns A- or better regularly gets there far faster than one who wins games but grades poorly. Put simply, grades are the bottleneck, not playtime.

Once you pass level 10, the crest shows your actual level number. It’s purely cosmetic, but it’s a nice signal to teammates that you’ve played the champion a lot.

What rewards come with Champion Mastery?

Riot’s guide lists Battle Pass XP, the evolving mastery crests, the champion title at level 10 and above, and the loading screen banner and multi-kill announcements from level 4. Patch 14.10 also brought per-split mastery progression and Champion Sets with their own rewards for playing a variety of champions.

For what it’s worth, none of these give gameplay power. Mastery is simply a record of the time and skill you’ve put into one champion.

What happened to the old mastery system?

Before patch 14.10, Champion Mastery stopped at level 7. Levels 6 and 7 needed tokens earned from S grades, and once you hit 7 the crest stayed the same no matter how much more you played. Mastery Points kept counting, but nothing visible changed.

Riot’s dev post on the update described replacing those S-grade tokens with Marks of Mastery, achievements earned each split by playing well. The level 7 ceiling simply disappeared, and players who had been stuck there for years suddenly had more levels to climb.

The practical difference: the old cap made one-tricks and casual players look identical once both reached level 7. The uncapped crest finally separates someone with fifty games on a champion from someone with a thousand.

Does mastery carry over to another account?

No. Mastery belongs to the account you earned it on, like your champions and skins. A second account starts every champion at zero.

Do mastery levels reset each season?

To be fair, levels never go down, but Marks can only be earned by playing well in the current split, so a level 15 crest shows sustained effort rather than one good month years ago.

Tips to unlock sigils in LoL faster

So what actually speeds it up? Pick one or two champions and stay on them; mastery rewards focus. Play them in the role where you grade best, and look at what your grade rewards on that champion, such as farming well on carries or vision and assists on supports.
