Champion Mastery crests (sigils) are those badges you see on loading screens and profiles. They look different at each level from 1 to 10. Past Level 10 your number sits on top of the crest. Free, permanent, earned by playing. This is what 90% of people mean when they google “unlock sigils League of Legends.”
Demon’s Hand sigils were powerup stones in a limited-time Balatro-style card minigame that ran from March 19 to April 28, 2025. There were 49 Common and 24 Rare sigils you could collect. That event is over now, so these are no longer obtainable.
Steel Sigil is just a shop item. 1,100 gold, 15 AD, 30 armor, builds into Death’s Dance and Guardian Angel. Totally unrelated to the mastery stuff.

Riot gutted Champion Mastery in patch 14.10. If you want to unlock sigils in League of Legends, this is the system you gotta know. Before 14.10, mastery capped at Level 7 and you needed S-grade tokens plus Blue Essence to get there. Now there’s no cap and it runs on Marks of Mastery instead. If you had progress from the old system, Riot converted it automatically.
The gist: you play games, you get Mastery Points (MP). You also collect Marks of Mastery when you hit certain grade thresholds each season. Wins hand out way more MP than losses. S+ games give more than B games. Queueing with friends adds a little extra on top.

Big gotcha that confuses people: MP and Marks are separate gates. You can have 50,000 MP on a champ and still be stuck at Level 5 because you haven’t earned your Marks. The points just pile up and wait. I was hardstuck Level 6 on Thresh for like three weeks because I kept pulling A grades and couldn’t land that S minus no matter what I tried.

The nerdy breakdown: about 0.72 MP per second on a win, half that (0.36) on a loss. There’s also a flat base thrown in, ~280 for wins, ~130 for losses. Then grade acts as a multiplier on top. So a 40-minute win where you pop off and get S? Yeah, that’s 1,200+ MP from a single game.
Estimated Games to Unlock Sigils at Each Level
Most players average somewhere around 600 MP per game when you mix wins and losses together. With that number, here’s how long the grind takes to unlock sigils at each level in League of Legends:

The Marks are the real bottleneck, not the MP. You’ll usually have way more MP than you need. The actual gating factor is getting enough S- or higher grades each season to stock up on Marks.

You get Marks by clearing milestones. Each champion has four milestones per ranked season (plus a bonus repeatable one). They reset when the new season starts, so you’re always re-earning them.
What the milestones actually ask for:
- Milestone 1: One game at B- or higher, plus four games at C- or higher. Rewards 1 Mark and a Hextech Chest.
- Milestone 2: One game at A- or higher, plus four games at C- or higher. Rewards 1 Mark.
- Milestone 3: One game at S- or higher, plus four games at C- or higher. Rewards 2 Marks and a Hextech Chest.
- Milestone 4: One game at S- or higher, plus four games at C- or higher. Rewards 2 Marks. Completing this unlocks the champion’s title for the rest of the season.

One S+ still only fills one milestone slot, by the way. Getting an S+ when you needed S- doesn’t give you double credit or anything. Arena and rotating modes give you MP but won’t progress milestones because there are no letter grades in those modes.
Every milestone you complete also gives you Battle Pass XP on top of the Marks. So grinding milestones across a split actually feeds into your Battle Pass progression too. Finishing milestone 4 on any champion unlocks that champion’s title (like “The Chain Warden” for Thresh) for the rest of the current split. These titles show up on your profile and are a nice flex if you hit Level 10 and make the title permanent.

Where Your Mastery Crest (Sigil) Shows Up
Starting at Level 4 your crest becomes public. It’s on your loading screen border, your champ select player card, the Champion Collection under the Mastery tab, and you can flash it in-game with Ctrl+6 (or /masterybadge in chat). Multi-kill banners show it too, and enemies see your mastery level in the death recap after you kill them. Your profile also shows your total mastery score, which is just all your champion levels added up. That’s how you can tell a one-trick with Level 300 Yorick from a guy with 50 champions sitting at Level 6.
The crests from Level 1 to 10 all have that Targon mountain aesthetic from the 14.10 rework. They keep getting fancier. Past Level 10 the design stays the same but your number gets printed on it, so when some guy with Level 47 Yasuo loads into your lobby you see that “47” and you know exactly what kind of game this is gonna be.

Grades are what gate everything. After each game you get a letter from D- to S+, and that letter decides both your MP payout and your milestone progress. The grade compares you against every other player in your region who played that exact same champion in that exact same role. So your Thresh support gets measured against other Thresh supports, not against Thresh tops or Nautilus supports.
This is exploitable. If you play Lux support, you’re compared to other Lux supports. Take her mid and you’re measured against Lux mids instead. Off-meta positions have smaller comparison pools and lower average stats, so a “good” game there gets you a higher grade than the same exact performance would on a popular pick. Lux support is a bad example because she’s popular there too, but something like Pantheon support vs Pantheon top? Night and day for grade farming.
What goes into your grade? Kills, deaths, assists (your KDA), CS per minute, vision score, and damage. Riot hasn’t published the exact weights, but from my games and what the community has figured out, CS and vision score pull the most weight. You can go 2/0/15 as a support and still only get an A if your vision score is mediocre. OTP players have an easier time farming S grades because they know their champion’s limits inside out.
MMR doesn’t affect grading at all. Iron or Diamond, doesn’t matter. The grading system treats everyone the same way relative to your region’s stats for that champion-position combo.
Tips to Unlock Sigils in League of Legends Faster
After grinding mastery on about 15 champions to Level 7+ under the old system and several past 10 under the new one, here’s what actually helps you unlock sigils in League of Legends without losing your mind:
Play in a premade group. You get bonus MP for queuing with friends. A full 5-stack gives the biggest bonus. The MP difference between solo and premade adds up fast over dozens of games.
Focus on farm and vision. CS per minute and vision score are the two easiest stats to control regardless of how the game goes. Even in a loss, high CS and strong warding can push you from an A to an S-. I’ve gotten S grades in games where my team got stomped, just from farming well and placing wards.
Play off-meta positions for S grades. Taking a champion to an uncommon role lowers the comparison bar. Pantheon support has a much smaller player pool than Pantheon top, so decent stats can score higher. Just don’t grief your teammates by picking something truly unplayable.
Use ARAM to earn MP on champions you don’t own. ARAM lets you accumulate mastery points even on champions that aren’t in your collection. You also earn grades in ARAM, so it counts for milestone progress too. Great way to passively level mastery on random champions you get in rolls.
Check your Mastery Set each season. Riot throws 10 champions into a set for you (your mains + some picks they chose). Hit milestones on those specific champs and you get a bonus chest on top of the normal rewards. Free loot for zero extra effort.
Don’t ignore the bonus milestone. After finishing all four regular milestones, the repeating bonus milestone awards extra Marks. Riot reduced the requirement from seven S-grade games to three after community feedback, so it’s way more doable now.

What Happened to the Demon’s Hand Sigils?
People googling “unlock sigils League of Legends” in 2025 were mostly looking for The Demon’s Hand, a card minigame Riot ran from March 19 to April 28. It lived in the client for about five weeks across patches 25.06 and 25.08.
Think Balatro but set in Runeterra. You built poker hands against AI enemies on a branching map, and sigils were the powerup stones you bought between fights to buff your damage or mess with your opponent. 49 Common ones were available from the start and you had to grind regular LoL games to unlock 24 Rare ones (Arena gave 30% faster progress on the hidden Rare sigil tracker).
8 Rare sigils plus a Story Mode clear got you into Hard Mode. 16 plus a Hard clear opened Demon Mode. Collect all 24 and you got an icon and some BXP. Whole thing is gone now. Can’t play it, can’t earn the rewards. Just how limited events work.
Steel Sigil: The Item
While we’re here: Steel Sigil is a 1,100 gold component in the item shop. 15 AD, 30 armor, builds into Death’s Dance and Guardian Angel. Cloth Armor + Long Sword + Cloth Armor + 150g. Nothing to “unlock” here, you literally just buy it mid-game.
Unlock Sigils on a Smurf Account
Made a new account? Cool, your mastery is gone. Zero on everything. Got a Level 10 Jinx on your main? Doesn’t matter, your smurf starts fresh. You can make a new LoL account in two minutes but rebuilding mastery takes actual games. And the tracker won’t even activate until your account hits level 5, so those first few games don’t count at all.
Silver lining: getting S grades on a smurf is stupidly easy compared to your main. You’re playing against worse players, so your CS, KDA, and vision score look ridiculous next to the rest of the lobby. I’ve gotten S+ on champs I barely play just by last-hitting minions and dropping a control ward or two. If your goal is specifically to farm mastery fast, a smurf is lowkey the move.

Mastery Sets: Extra Rewards for Playing Multiple Champions
Every season Riot picks 10 champions for you and bundles them into a “Mastery Set.” Three are your most-played, four come from your main role, and three are random picks Riot figured you’d like. Hit milestones on any of those 10 and you build toward a bonus reward.
Get enough milestone completions across your set and you get a super-charged mastery chest out of it. Basically free stuff for playing champs you were gonna play anyway. You can see your current set in the Collection tab.
This runs parallel to the regular per-champion milestones. Nothing conflicts. One S- game on a set champion counts for both your sigil progress on that champ and your set progress at the same time.
Eternals vs. Champion Mastery Sigils
People sometimes confuse Eternals with the mastery sigil system, and I get why. Both track champion-specific stats. But Eternals have nothing to do with how you unlock sigils in League of Legends. Completely separate systems.
Eternals dropped in patch 10.5 (2020) and they’re a paid stat-tracking thing. You spend RP to unlock them, and they track stuff like “skillshots landed on Ezreal” or “enemies knocked up with Yasuo R.” Loading screen and death recap show your Eternal stats. Most of Reddit hated that Riot charged money for this when it felt like it should have been baked into mastery for free.
Mastery crests and sigils cost nothing. They track how much you play and how well you perform, not individual stats. Riot removed the Blue Essence cost that used to gate Level 6 and 7 under the old token system, so the whole path from Level 1 to infinity is free now.
