First time I saw Subterranean Nautilus in a loading screen I thought someone modded the game. The whole color palette shifts from deep ocean to underground cavern and it just works. Been running this skin on and off since maybe season 4 or 5, dont remember exactly, but it holds up way better than most skins from that era. Nautilus already looks like he belongs underground with that massive anchor and heavy armor, so the theme fits naturally.
How Subterranean Nautilus actually looks in game
The model swap is solid for a 975 RP Standard skin. Nautilus goes from rusty deep-sea diver to this rocky, almost magma-infused creature. Think volcanic cavern meets mining operation. The anchor gets a full retexture with jagged stone edges, and the suit itself has these cracked rock plates with orange-red energy glowing through the gaps.
New VFX on this one. Not gonna lie, that surprised me for a skin this old. The abilities get a warm underground glow to them. His Q hook trails with that molten look, and when you proc his passive root on someone the ground effect reads cleaner than base. W shield has a subtle lava tint. Nothing crazy but it changes the feel in teamfight situations where you’re diving the backline.
Voice lines stay base. No new VO, which is expected at this price point. The recall is also default. Kinda feels like Riot put the budget into the model and VFX and called it a day, which honestly is the right call for 975 RP. I’d rather have a clean model swap with decent particles than a mediocre everything.
Played this in a ranked game last Thursday around midnight and my ADC asked if it was a new skin. That tells you something about how rarely you see it on the Rift. Maybe 3 or 4 times total in my Diamond games this season.
The Legacy line and release context
Subterranean Nautilus dropped February 14, 2012. Valentine’s Day release for the least romantic champion in the game. Classic Riot. This was part of Nautilus’s launch window so it’s one of his original skins.
Kienan ‘Knockwurst’ Lafferty handled the artwork. The splash captures the underground vibe perfectly with Nautilus emerging from cracked earth, anchor dragging through stone. It reads well as a thumbnail too which matters more than people think for the loading screen.
Part of the Legacy skinline. Shop has it at 975 RP. No chromas available, so what you see is what you get. (Random aside: I actually wish they’d add chromas to older skins like this because an ice-blue variant would go hard.) Could be wrong here but I think this is one of the less picked Nautilus skins just because people gravitate toward Astronautilus or the Conqueror one. Their loss.
Should you pick up Subterranean Nautilus?
Real verdict: if you’re a Nautilus main looking for something different from the usual ocean theme, this is your skin. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. The underground aesthetic gives Nautilus a completely different identity on the Rift and the VFX changes, while not Legendary tier, add enough to make abilities feel distinct.
Skip this if you already own Astronautilus or Worldbreaker. Those are objectively more polished. But for the price and the unique theme? Subterranean holds its own. Been maining Nautilus with this equipped for peel comps in ranked and the skin just hits different when you’re locking someone down in the jungle. Best budget Nautilus skin full stop. The lane presence alone with that massive stone anchor dragging across the ground makes engage plays feel heavier somehow, even if thats obviously just cosmetic.
