There is an old joke in the League community that Spirit Guard Udyr is what Udyr’s base skin should have looked like all along. Before the 2022 rework that joke was basically true. July 16, 2013, this skin dropped and it was miles ahead of base Udyr in every way. Now post-rework the gap is smaller but Spirit Guard still does its own thing well enough to justify existing. Played about 200 Udyr games with this skin before the rework changed everything.

Four stances, four spirit forms

Spirit Guard Udyr evolves visually as you level up, similar to Pulsefire Ezreal. The model starts in basic monk robes and gradually builds toward full spirit warrior gear. Rudy Siswanto did the splash showing Udyr channeling all four animal spirits simultaneously. Strong composition.

Each stance gets a unique spirit animal visual. Tiger stance summons a spectral tiger aura around Udyr with orange-gold VFX on the empowered attacks. The tiger claws appear on his fists and the empowered auto attacks leave claw mark particle trails on the target. Turtle stance brings up a green spirit turtle shell for the shield and the shield itself has this translucent jade effect that pulses when it absorbs damage. Bear stance activates with a bear spirit roar and the stun-charge has blue lightning particles. You can actually see a bear silhouette flash behind Udyr for a split second when you activate it. Phoenix stance ignites with firebird VFX on the AOE cone attack and the persistent AOE damage circle around Udyr has feathers drifting upward from it. Switching between stances rapidly in a teamfight creates this cycling effect of animal spirits that looks chaotic but in a good way. Had a game last week where I was running through the enemy jungle cycling all four stances just clearing camps and my mid laner typed “bro your character is having a seizure” in chat. Fair enough honestly.

Post-rework Udyr changed his stances to Wilding Claw, Iron Mantle, Blazing Stampede, and Wingborne Storm. Spirit Guard adapted to match. The spirit animals still appear for each stance but the VFX were updated to work with the new kit. The Wingborne Storm version of old Phoenix stance puts a swirling spirit bird around Udyr that pulses AOE damage with feather particles. Kinda feels like a completely different skin after the rework honestly.

Sean Rohani voices Spirit Guard Udyr with a more zen, disciplined tone compared to base Udyr’s wild energy. The voice lines reference each animal spirit by name and the lines change depending on which stance is active. Recall has Udyr meditating with all four spirits circling him. (Sidebar: theres a hidden detail where if you max rank a stance the spirit animal in the recall appears larger. Took me 50 games to notice that.)

The pricing question after the rework

Spirit Guard Udyr released July 16, 2013 at 3250 RP. Ultimate tier. No chromas. Still in the shop. Here is the awkward part though. When Riot reworked Udyr in 2022, base Udyr got a massive visual upgrade that closed the gap between default and Spirit Guard significantly. Before the rework, Spirit Guard was essential if you wanted Udyr to look presentable. After the rework, base Udyr looks good on his own.

Does Spirit Guard still look better than base? Yes. The spirit animal effects are more elaborate, the evolution system adds progression during the game, and the voice work is distinct. The evolution stages are genuinely satisfying too. You start looking like a simple monk and by level 16 or so you have this fully armored spirit warrior with glowing animal motifs on the armor plates. Feels like a reward for farming well and hitting your power spikes on time. But is the gap worth 3250 RP? That depends on how much Udyr you play.

Not gonna lie, there is a specific moment when you are doing your first full jungle clear with Spirit Guard and you hit that second evolution tier around level 5 or 6, and the model shifts right as you finish your gromp. Something about that mid-clear transformation just feels right. The skin was designed around old Udyr’s jungle identity and it still carries that energy even after the rework changed a lot of the specifics.

Who should buy Spirit Guard Udyr today

If you main Udyr and play him regularly in ranked, Spirit Guard is the premium option and it delivers on that. The stance-switching visuals give your jungle clears and teamfight presence a visual identity that base doesnt match. Four spirit animals cycling as you fight is genuinely cool even years later.

If Udyr is just someone you play occasionally, 3250 RP is a steep ask when base Udyr already looks decent post-rework. Would suggest waiting for a sale or checking if it shows up in Your Shop at a discount. Been using this skin off and on for a decade now and while I dont regret the purchase, I also cant pretend the value proposition hasnt changed since 2022. (Sidebar: if you want to see what Spirit Guard Udyr looked like pre-rework, there are comparison videos on YouTube and the difference between old base Udyr and Spirit Guard was genuinely hilarious. Old base Udyr looked like a PS2 character.)

One more thing worth mentioning. Spirit Guard Udyr in the jungle feels different from base because the spirit animal effects give you better visual feedback on stance timing. When you proc the empowered ability on each stance there is a distinct flash from the corresponding spirit animal that makes it easier to track your rotation. Could be wrong about whether thats intentional design or just a side effect of flashier VFX but I play better with this skin than default and I think that is why. For Udyr mains who grind ranked, that small clarity boost adds up over hundreds of games.
