Shadow Prince Malzahar

First time I saw Shadow Prince Malzahar loading in was back in like season 3 or 4, some random ARAM lobby at 1 AM. Thought it was a custom skin mod. The purple-to-gold color shift on Malzahar hit different from every other skin he had at the time, and honestly for 520 RP it caught my attention way more than it should have.

What Shadow Prince actually changes on Malzahar

So lets be real here. This is a 520 RP Standard tier skin. You’re not getting new particles on your Q or some fancy recall animation. Voice lines stay base. No VFX refresh, no voice filter, nothing like that. What you do get is a full model swap that turns Malzahar into this gold-and-white royal aesthetic. Think desert royalty vibes.

The robes go from that dark void purple to a clean cream and gold palette. His headpiece gets reworked into something that actually looks like a crown or headdress. Kinda feels like Riot took the base Malzahar fantasy and asked “what if he was the prince of Shurima instead of a void prophet.” The Voidlings keep the base model which is a missed opportunity but again, 520 RP. Not expecting miracles.

In lane specifically, the gold reads well against Summoner’s Rift. Played maybe 30 games with this skin back when I was climbing through Plat and the silhouette is distinct enough. Your E still looks like base E, your ult still locks someone down the same way. No gameplay confusion. Simple change – huge impact on how the champion feels in your hands though.

(Random aside: Shadow Prince Malzahar was my default Malzahar skin for two full seasons before I got Battle Boss from a chest.)

The Legacy line and release context

Shadow Prince Malzahar dropped June 1, 2010. Season one era. Malzahar himself was still relatively new to the Rift at that point, only been out about a year. The skin falls under the Legacy skinline which basically means it’s from that early batch of skins Riot was pumping out before they standardized their tier system.

No splash artist credited in the data for this one. Not surprising for 2010 releases. Riot wasnt exactly documenting their art pipeline back then the way they do now. The splash itself has that classic painted style, Malzahar floating with golden energy around him, pretty clean for the era honestly.

Still in the shop at 520 RP. Could be wrong here but I think this is one of the cheapest Malzahar options you can grab right now. No chromas available which tracks for a skin this old and this price point. What you see is what you get.

Should you pick up Shadow Prince Malzahar?

Real verdict: if you’re a Malzahar main looking for a budget option, Shadow Prince Malzahar does the job. 520 RP is basically nothing. You’re spending less than half of what an Epic costs and getting a model that genuinely looks different from base.

Now. Is it his best skin? Not even close. Battle Boss exists. Hextech exists. Beezahar is a thing now. But those are all 1350 RP or higher. Been maining Malzahar on and off since season 9 I think or 10 dont remember, and I still rotate Shadow Prince into my ranked games when I want that clean look without the particle noise of his flashier skins.

For Malzahar one-tricks who already own everything else, this is a nice throwback. For new Malzahar players, honestly not gonna lie, you could do worse for your first skin purchase. The gold aesthetic pops in teamfights and the price is right. Skip it only if you’re saving for something Legendary tier. Otherwise 520 RP feels fair for what you get. Not the flashiest thing in your collection but sometimes you just want to lock in Malzahar, farm up cs mid lane, scale to late-game, and let your Voidlings do the talking without a bunch of visual clutter. Shadow Prince Malzahar delivers exactly that.
