Battle Academia Garen

First game I played with Battle Academia Garen was around 3 AM on a Wednesday, queued up for a Diamond ranked match and immediately noticed the splash loading screen hit different. The whole anime protagonist energy is strong here. Garen in a school uniform with that oversized sword feels ridiculous in the best way, and honestly the skin sold me before I even saw the in-game model. Been running this as my default Garen skin since season 11.

What actually changes in game

So Battle Academia Garen gives you the full Epic treatment. New model, new VFX on every ability, and a new recall animation. No new voice lines though, voice stays default. The Q winds up with this bright energy trail that looks clean when you’re running someone down in lane. Feels faster than it is, which I think messes with people’s reaction time. Could be wrong here but I swear opponents flash later against this skin.

The E spin is where this skin really shines. Literal golden sparks flying everywhere during the spin. In a teamfight its actually easier to track your damage ticks compared to base Garen, which is a minor gameplay clarity thing I appreciate. The W shield pops with this blue hexagonal barrier effect. Nothing crazy but it reads well.

Ult is the showstopper. Giant sword drops from the sky with that anime execution energy. The VFX on the R kill feels satisfying every single time. Played maybe 150 games with this skin and the ult never gets old. Last Tuesday I dove their ADC under tower, popped W, Q silenced, E spun, R executed. Clean. The recall has Garen doing this whole dramatic pose with energy swirling around him. Fits the Battle Academia theme perfectly.

(Random aside: the recall animation reminds me of every shonen anime transformation sequence and I am not complaining.)

The Battle Academia line and release context

Battle Academia Garen dropped March 18, 2021. Mid season 11. Ina Wong and West Studio handled the artwork, they captured that anime academy vibe perfectly. The Battle Academia skinline is one of Riot’s more creative concepts. Taking champions and throwing them into a school setting with over-the-top powers. Garen fits naturally as the class president type who takes everything too seriously.

The skinline already had Ezreal, Lux, Katarina, and others before Garen joined. Kinda feels like Garen was overdue for the roster. He’s the most stereotypical “protagonist energy” champion in the game. Broad shoulders, big sword, justice speeches. The Battle Academia universe was made for him.

8 chromas total for this skin. Sapphire is my personal favorite, the blue uniform swap looks like a rival school transfer student. Ruby goes hard if you want the aggressive red look, and Pearl gives you this clean white-and-gold combo that honestly looks more premium than the base chroma. The rest are fine but those three stand out. Permanent shop availability, 1350 RP. Standard Epic pricing.

Worth the 1350 RP?

Real verdict: Battle Academia Garen is a solid Epic skin that does exactly what it needs to do. Not gonna lie, Garen has some stiff competition in his skin catalog. God-King Garen exists at Legendary tier and that skin is on another level entirely. But if you dont want to drop 1820 RP and you want something flashier than Steel Legion or Warring Kingdoms, Battle Academia sits in a good spot.

The VFX quality is above average for an Epic. Garen mains who like the anime aesthetic will get their money’s worth. Been spamming this in Diamond when I’m not on my main and the skin just performs well visually. The ability effects are clear, the model looks sharp, the chromas add variety.

Skip this if you already own God-King or Mecha Kingdoms and dont care about the school theme. But for Garen one-tricks looking to fill out their collection, 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. I keep coming back to this skin specifically for the ult animation. That giant sword drop in a late-game teamfight when you execute their backline carry. Worth it for that moment alone. Not the best Garen skin full stop, but top three for sure if you factor in price-to-quality ratio. Season 12 I think I had maybe a 60% winrate on Garen with this skin equipped. Correlation isnt causation but the anime power helps.
