League has 21 LoL level borders right now. Level 1 gives you a basic Piltover frame and the last one, Eternus, sits at Level 500. That ring around someone’s summoner icon in lobby? Level border. Riot redesigned the whole set back in April 2022 because they felt outdated compared to the new client look. Each one references a different part of the League world (Shurima, Shadow Isles, Freljord, stuff like that), and the nice part is you’re free to swap back to an older one whenever.
I’m around Level 300 on my main and still using the Shadow Isles border from 150. Just looks better. That’s the whole point. A lot of people assume you’re stuck with whatever your latest unlock is, but nah, Riot lets you pick from anything you’ve earned.

What Are Level Borders in League of Legends?
OK so before Patch 7.22 dropped in November 2017, every account capped at Level 30. Only borders in the game were ranked ones. Then Riot removed the cap entirely, levels became infinite, and LoL level borders showed up as their own cosmetic thing. Big deal at the time because it gave non-ranked players something to show on their profile besides a default icon.
They don’t reflect skill at all. Seen plenty of Level 400 accounts stuck in Silver. And Level 50 accounts sitting in Diamond. Completely unrelated systems. Your border just tells other players how many games you’ve played, period.
You’ll see your level border in three spots: profile page, friends list, pre-game loading screen. But sometimes a ranked frame or skin frame stacks over it on loading screen and people think their border vanished. It didn’t. Just got covered.
Complete List of All 21 LoL Level Borders
First one at Level 1. Then 30, 50, 75. After 75 it becomes one every 25 levels all the way up to 500.
| Level | Theme | Visual Style |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Piltover | Clean bronze, tech-inspired gears |
| 30 | Zaun | Green-tinted industrial frame |
| 50 | Hextech | Blue crystalline energy |
| 75 | Fire | Orange and red flame motifs |
| 100 | Archlight | Bright gold, radiant glow |
| 125 | Infused | Purple arcane shimmer |
| 150 | Shadow Isles | Teal spectral wisps |
| 175 | Shurima | Sandy gold, ancient desert |
| 200 | Lunari | Silver moonlight tones |
| 225 | Warring Kingdoms | Red and gold Eastern motifs |
| 250 | Freljord | Icy blue, frozen edges |
| 275 | Battlecast | Metallic red-orange machinery |
| 300 | Ionia | Pink and purple spiritual flow |
| 325 | Bilgewater | Teal-green, oceanic pirate vibes |
| 350 | Runic | Deep blue glowing runes |
| 375 | Noxus | Dark crimson, aggressive edges |
| 400 | Celestial | Light blue cosmic glow |
| 425 | Elderwood | Nature-green, living wood |
| 450 | The Void | Deep purple corruption |
| 475 | Blood Moon | Crimson ritual markings |
| 500 | Eternus | White-gold, the final prestige frame |
Reddit always names the same favorites: Void at 450, Blood Moon at 475, Eternus at 500. But Bilgewater (325) with a pirate icon combo is underrated. Shadow Isles (150) too. Honestly most of the borders between 100 and 250 don’t get much love. They’re fine, just not as memorable as the later ones.
How to Unlock LoL Level Borders
Play games. Get XP. Hit a milestone level. Border shows up automatically. Can’t buy them, can’t craft them. No loot boxes, no mystery chests, nothing like that. Purely playtime.
Modes that give XP:
- SR normals and ranked
- ARAM
- Arena
- Bot games (Co-op vs AI)
- Whatever rotating mode is live
Customs don’t give XP. Games under 7 minutes don’t give XP. And TFT? Nope. TFT runs its own pass, completely separate from your summoner level. You could play TFT all weekend and your LoL level borders progress stays at zero.
Wins pay more XP than losses. Longer games pay more than short ones. First-win-of-the-day bonus is free XP most people forget about. And here’s a trick almost nobody knows: brand new accounts get a free 30-day XP boost if you log in three days in a row and win once. Riot never advertises this.
Store boosts help a lot. Day boost doubles your base XP per game. Win boost adds 216 XP flat on every win. Run both at the same time and you’re basically tripling gains. Even with all that though, Level 500 is still hundreds of hours away. Been playing since Season 6, still not there on my main. Most of my friends who started around the same time are in the 250-350 range depending on how many games they play per week.
XP Per Game Mode
Riot never published the XP formula. Players figured it out though. SR wins pay roughly 6.6 XP per minute, losses about 5.4 per minute. A 30-minute win on SR? Around 205 XP. 30-minute loss? Roughly 167. ARAM works on the same formula but games are shorter so you get less per match.
| Game Mode | Avg Match Length | Avg XP (Win) | Avg XP (Loss) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summoner’s Rift | 28-35 min | ~190-230 | ~155-190 |
| ARAM | 18-25 min | ~125-165 | ~100-135 |
| Arena | 15-20 min | ~100-140 | ~80-110 |
| Co-op vs AI | 12-18 min | ~75-120* | N/A |
*Bot XP gets nerfed based on account level. Level 30+ accounts only earn 75% of normal XP from bots. Past 180 minutes of bot games in one day that drops to 55%. Riot did this because bot farming was out of control.
How Long Does It Take to Reach Each Border?
Ran these numbers myself. 175 XP per game average, 25 minutes per game, no boosts, mixed win/loss.
| Border | Level | Est. Games from Lvl 1 | Est. Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zaun | 30 | ~150 | ~65 |
| Hextech | 50 | ~270 | ~115 |
| Fire | 75 | ~430 | ~180 |
| Archlight | 100 | ~600 | ~250 |
| Shadow Isles | 150 | ~950 | ~400 |
| Lunari | 200 | ~1,300 | ~540 |
| Freljord | 250 | ~1,700 | ~710 |
| Ionia | 300 | ~2,100 | ~875 |
| Celestial | 400 | ~2,900 | ~1,210 |
| Eternus | 500 | ~3,800 | ~1,580 |
1,580 hours for Eternus. That’s three games a day, zero days off, about 3.5 years. Boosts cut maybe 40-50% off that number. But even boosted you’re looking at 800+ hours. When you see a Celestial or Eternus border in your game, that person has been at this for a long time.
XP per level isn’t flat either. First 100 levels fly by. After 200 it slows down a lot. The last 10 LoL level borders on the list take longer to grind out than the first 10 combined. I tracked my own XP gains for about a month around Level 250 and the XP-per-level jump compared to Level 100 was noticeable. Felt like every level took twice as many games as it used to.
How to Change Your Border Frame
Don’t have to use whatever your latest unlock is. If Fire at 75 looks better to you than Ionia at 300, just switch it. Three clicks:
- Summoner icon, top right of client.
- “BORDERS” in identity settings.
- Click the one you want.
Shows up immediately. Profile, friends list, loading screen.

Lots of people do this. Bilgewater’s teal at 325 goes well with pirate icons. Fire at 75 pops because of that warm orange. I’ve seen Challenger players rocking Level 150 borders. Nobody cares about flexing the highest number.
Level Borders vs Ranked Borders: How They Differ
New players confuse these constantly. Google “LoL level borders” and half the results are actually about ranked frames. Two completely separate things though.
| Feature | Level Borders | Ranked Borders |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | Account level (XP) | Competitive rank (tier) |
| Total available | 21 | 10 (Iron through Challenger) |
| Permanence | Permanent unlock | Resets each ranked season |
| How to earn | Play any game mode | Win ranked games |
| What it shows | Time invested | Skill level |
| Switchable | Yes, any unlocked border | Tied to current or previous rank |
And then skin borders exist too. Those come attached to specific skins from events. Only show up on loading screen when you’re playing that exact champ with that exact skin equipped. Profile and friends list don’t show them at all.
What Are Skin Borders?
This is the third border type and it trips people up more than the other two. When Riot drops a new skin line, sometimes they sell a “border bundle” alongside it. Grab it during the event and you get an exclusive loading screen frame for that skin. It only works for that one skin on that one champion. Use a different skin? Border doesn’t appear.
Miss the event window? Gone. Can’t get it after. Prestige skins do this. Event skins too. Star Guardian, Spirit Blossom, Worlds skins all had border bundles at some point.
Three border types, quick version:
- Level borders = permanent, tied to account level, XP-based
- Ranked borders = seasonal, tied to your rank, yearly reset
- Skin borders = cosmetic, locked to one skin, event window only
Profile shows level and ranked borders. Loading screen shows all three but they layer over each other. That’s why your LoL level borders sometimes look “gone” during a game. They’re not. Something else is just displayed on top.

The 2022 Border Redesign: Old vs New
April 13, 2022, Riot pushed a visual update to all 21 level borders. Old ones had this chunky, detailed look with lots of extra geometry. New ones are thinner and cleaner. Match the client redesign better, for whatever that’s worth. Some of the mid-range borders like Shurima and Warring Kingdoms look almost identical, while the high-end ones are a completely different vibe.
Reddit lost it. Long-time players wanted to keep the old designs, or at least have a toggle. Riot wasn’t having it. I get it though, the old Void border was genuinely sick. A few years later the new set has grown on me, but I still miss the originals sometimes.
High-end borders changed the most. Void and Eternus look nothing like they used to. Low-level ones like Piltover and Zaun barely changed. This video has every old and new border side by side:
Fastest Ways to Level Up in LoL
500 takes years. People who started in Season 3 and never quit are somewhere around 300-500 right now depending on how hard they play. If you want to move through the LoL level borders faster, here’s what actually works.
ARAM and Arena spam. Less XP per game but games are way shorter. XP per hour ends up roughly the same as Summoner’s Rift, sometimes better if your queues pop fast. Arena is probably the most fun way to grind if you get bored of SR norms.
Bots work early on. Under Level 10, Co-op vs AI gives full XP and you win every game. After that the penalty kicks in hard though (check the table above for exact numbers). Still a decent option for people who hate PvP and just want background XP while watching YouTube.
Biggest hack: stack both boost types. Day boost plus win boost. A single win gives roughly 3x normal XP. Costs RP but it’s the fastest path if you’re chasing a specific border.
First-win-of-the-day is free and most players just ignore it. Even one ARAM win per day, every day for a month, adds up to a pretty solid chunk of XP.
Is There Anything After Level 500?
No. Eternus at 500 is the last border. Leveling keeps going (no cap exists), but there’s nothing new to unlock cosmetically. Riot hasn’t said anything about extending the LoL level borders past 500, and millions of accounts have blown past that mark already. You’d think that would be enough demand but Riot moves slow on stuff like this.
You still get champion capsules with shards and Blue Essence on level-up. Riot used to give gemstones every 50 levels past 500 but swapped those for Mythic Essence in the 2022 loot rework. Most players at that level own every champ already so the BE just sits there collecting dust in the loot tab.
Will they add borders at 600 or 750 or 1000? Probably at some point. Threads asking for it show up on Reddit every couple months. Some people are past Level 1000 with zero new borders to show for it. Nothing confirmed though.
Why Your Border Might Not Be Showing
This gets posted on the League subreddit constantly. Someone sets their border, loads into a game, and something else shows up instead. Usually one of four things:
Ranked frame is overriding it. After you finish placements the ranked border can take priority. Check Customize Identity and make sure the right one is selected.
Skin border is showing instead. Some skins come with their own event frames. Those take over on loading screen when you use that skin. Only fix is swapping to a different skin.
Client bugged out. Happens all the time with the League client. Restart it.
Borders are turned off. There’s a “No Border” option in the settings. Might have clicked it without realizing.
Best LoL Level Borders (Community Picks)
I’ve spent way too long reading border threads. Five borders come up over and over again:
The Void (Level 450) shows up in high-level lobbies more than anything else. Deep purple, almost looks like it’s eating your icon. Pairs well with Kha’Zix or Vel’Koz icons.
Blood Moon (Level 475) has a crimson ritual aesthetic going on. Works really well with Blood Moon skins. That combo is lowkey clean.
Eternus (Level 500) is the status symbol. White-gold, subtle design. Nobody in lobby needs to ask what level you are.
Shadow Isles (Level 150) shouldn’t look this good for a border you unlock that early. Teal spectral glow, different shape from everything around it. I know Diamond players who went back to it after hitting 300+.
Bilgewater (Level 325) is the pirate main’s choice. Ocean green, looks great with GP and MF icons. ARAM players seem to love this one specifically.
Pick whatever looks cool to you. Match it with your icon, match it with your skin line, whatever. That’s the point.
