So… you’re watching your champion blink in and out of existence, sound effects melting into digital chaos, and that dreaded “Attempting to Reconnect” banner won’t go away. You’ve ruled out the herd of Wi-Fi-hungry smart gadgets in your home — even the smart blender. So what’s left? Us? Maybe. Let’s get to the bottom of it.
Connection problems are one of the top reasons players hit up Riot Support. We’ve been through this rodeo enough times to give you a trusty guide. Try these steps — and if they don’t work, there’s always our Advanced Connection Troubleshooting Guide waiting to show you the dark arts of firewall wrangling, port whispering, and DNS sorcery.
Riot, Your ISP, and the Three Horsemen of Lag
There are only three culprits when it comes to League acting up:
Riot’s end — servers down, unexpected chaos, power outage (maybe someone tripped over the cable).
Your ISP — slow, unstable, or just plain evil.
Your setup — software, hardware, or some rogue setting causing packet panic.
Let’s figure out which monster is haunting your connection.
Know Your Enemy: A Crash Course in Network Goblins
Latency (Ping): How long it takes for your command to reach the server and come back.
Packet Loss: When bits of your data vanish into the void.
Buffering: Packets getting stuck in traffic.
Jitter: Unstable travel time for your data. Not fun.
Step One: Are Riot’s Servers on Fire?
Check your regional Riot Server Status first. If everything looks peachy, head over to the Lag Report (available in most regions). Log in, and you’ll get a snapshot of your recent matches, scored against other players and ISPs in your area.
Still not clear? Check @RiotSupport on Twitter. If something’s broken, we’ll usually talk about it there first.
Step Two: Is It Actually Your Connection?
Before you descend into a vortex of driver updates and Ethernet cable swaps, check the connection logs automatically generated during your matches. They’ll give you a “Connection Score” that shows how you stack up. Follow the instructions in this guide to upload your logs and see what’s going on.
Fast Fixes Before the Deep Dive
🛠 Try the Riot Repair Tool
It’s a lightweight app that scans your setup and can often fix things without a fuss. Bonus: It can grab logs for you, too.
🔌 Ditch the Wi-Fi, Go Wired
Wireless is great until it’s not. Microwaves, walls, and neighbors with 200 devices can mess things up. Use Ethernet if you can. If not, try ohter guide to diagnose router/router-based gremlins.
❌ Avoid VPNs and Proxies
Unless a Riot tech wizard explicitly told you to use one for testing, VPNs and proxies usually make things worse, not better. Ditch them.
Mac Users: Quick Fixes for You
🍎 Update macOS
Outdated macOS can throw a wrench into everything.
Click the Apple logo → About This Mac → Software Update
Smash that “Update All” button
Reboot if needed
🧠 Update Network Drivers (Windows)
Old drivers = weird issues.
Hit the Windows key
Type
Device Manager→ EnterExpand Network Adapters
Right-click your active adapter → Update driver
Don’t know which one’s active? Update them all just in case.
Windows 10 Users: Disable Peer-to-Peer Updates
Your PC might be sharing Windows updates with strangers while you’re trying to win your lane. Here’s how to cut that off:
Open Settings → Updates & Security
Click Advanced Options → Choose how updates are delivered
Turn the switch Off
