Volibear Skins

10 skins available

Volibear's skin catalog is one of those collections that tells you exactly how Riot's design philosophy shifted over the years. Ten skins spanning from 2011 to 2023. Not the biggest roster, not the smallest. But there's a real gap between the old guard skins and the post-rework ones that hits you immediately when you scroll through. Been maining Volibear on and off since season 3, and honestly the rework in 2020 changed how every single skin reads in-game. Some got better. Some got weird. Worth talking through all of it.

How Volibear's Skin Collection Evolved

Ten skins total. Six Standards, three Epics, one Mythic. Not gonna lie, for a champion that's been in the game since 2011 thats a modest number. Compare that to someone like Lux or Ezreal and it feels light. But Volibear spent years as a niche pick before the rework brought him back into the spotlight, so the slow drip makes sense.

The early skins are all Standards. Thunder Lord, Northern Storm, Runeguard, Captain, El Rayo. These dropped between 2011 and 2015 when Riot was still pricing most skins at 520 or 750 RP. Simple texture swaps, maybe a new model here and there. Nothing crazy. The pre-rework versions of these skins looked like a different champion entirely. Old Volibear was basically an armored polar bear running at you. Current Volibear is a demigod crackling with lightning who towers over the lane.

Then there's The Thousand-Pierced Bear. Kinda feels like Riot wanted to acknowledge the Eldritch horror version of Volibear from the lore rework. It shipped alongside the gameplay rework in 2020 and has this unsettling stripped-down look. Free if you owned Volibear before the rework, which was a solid move.

The real jump in quality came with Duality Dragon in 2022. First Epic-tier Volibear skin that actually felt like it matched the champion's post-rework power fantasy. Then Inkshadow dropped in 2023 and Spirit Blossom Springs followed. Three Epics in two years after basically nothing for a long stretch. Riot clearly figured out that reworked Volibear sells skins, and they leaned into it. Could be wrong here but I think the rework playrate spike is what greenlit all three.

The Prestige Duality Dragon is the only Mythic. Special pricing, event-exclusive grind. Standard stuff for Prestige skins at this point. Whether its worth the grind depends entirely on how much you play the bear.

Best Skins for Volibear

Duality Dragon Volibear. Full stop. This is the skin. 1350 RP and it delivers hard. The dragon motif wraps around Volibear's kit perfectly because his Q charge and R slam already have that massive creature energy. The VFX on his ult specifically are a huge upgrade from base. When you slam down in a teamfight with the dragon lightning crackling around you, it reads completely different from default. Played maybe 150 games with this one across season 12 and 13. Never got tired of it.

Prestige Duality Dragon takes the same concept and goes white-gold. Cleaner. More refined. The particles shift to this warm golden tone that pops against the Rift's darker areas. (Random aside: the prestige splash is genuinely one of the better prestige arts in the game, most of them look rushed.) If you grinded the event back when it dropped, you already know. If you didnt, it rotates through Mythic Essence shop occasionally. Worth watching for.

Inkshadow Volibear surprised me. Released 2023, part of the Inkshadow line that did the ink-wash aesthetic. The Q charge leaves these ink trail particles on the ground and his E has this brush-stroke circle effect. Looks incredible in the river specifically. Had this in rotation for about a month after release and kept coming back to it over Duality Dragon some games. 1350 RP. Solid value.

Spirit Blossom Springs Volibear is the newest Epic and leans into the ethereal nature spirit angle. Fits Volibear's Freljordian demigod fantasy better than you'd expect from a skinline that started as an Ionian thing. The recall animation alone is worth it. Not sure if it's just me but the auto attack animations feel slightly smoother on this one. Could be placebo. Probably is.

Thunder Lord Volibear at 520 RP deserves a mention. Post-rework this skin actually looks decent for the price. Viking-inspired armor, lightning effects that match the base kit. For ranked games where you just want something different from default without dropping serious RP, Thunder Lord holds up. Been running this in my smurf games since the rework and nobody questions it.

Skinlines and Themes That Fit Volibear

Volibear sits in a lot of skinlines but only a few actually click with his identity. Dragonmancers (Duality Dragon) is the obvious winner. The whole "ancient powerful creature" angle maps perfectly onto a Freljordian storm god. Riot nailed the thematic overlap there.

Inkshadow works because it leans into the spiritual side. Volibear in lore is literally a god worshipped by the Ursine. An ink-painting spirit bear? Makes sense. The aesthetic restraint of the Inkshadow line forces Riot to be subtle with VFX instead of just throwing more particles at the screen, and that discipline shows.

The older skinlines are more hit or miss. Thunder Lord is basically "what if Volibear but Viking" which is fine, its already close to his base concept. Arcticops (Northern Storm) is the winter operations military bear. Captain is police bear. El Rayo is luchador bear. These are fun costume skins from an era when Riot treated every champion like a dress-up doll. They work for what they are but none of them push the fantasy forward.

Might be overthinking it but Coven Volibear would be an insane skinline fit that Riot hasnt explored yet. The Coven line deals with old gods and dark magic. Volibear's Eldritch horror lore connection through The Thousand-Pierced Bear basically writes itself into that universe. (Sidebar for Volibear mains: if Riot ever announces Coven Volibear just pre-purchase the bundle, dont even watch the spotlight first.)

The Otherroads tag on Thousand-Pierced Bear is interesting. Not a traditional skinline. More of a "what-if" category for skins that explore alternate lore paths. Fits because that skin IS the alternate lore version of Volibear, the one the Ursine actually worship. Dark stuff.

Budget vs Premium Picks

Real talk though. Volibear's price spread is narrow. You're looking at 520 RP on the low end and 1350 on the high end, plus the Prestige which is event currency. No Legendary. No Ultimate. The most expensive thing you can buy in the shop for Volibear is an Epic at 1350.

Best budget pick is Thunder Lord at 520 RP. Mentioned it above but it bears repeating. Post-rework model looks clean, the armor design reads well in lane, and its permanently in the shop. For a skin that costs less than a single chroma on other champions, Thunder Lord punches way above.

Best premium pick is Duality Dragon at 1350. Not even close. The VFX package on this skin transforms how Volibear's kit looks and feels. Every ability got the treatment. Q charge has dragon energy, W bite has new particles, E zone looks distinct, R slam is completely different. 1350 RP well spent for mains.

If you're climbing ranked and want one Volibear skin, get Duality Dragon. If you want variety, grab Thunder Lord as your budget backup. Thats the whole shopping list honestly. Two skins cover every situation. Maybe add Inkshadow if you're a collector or you just want options for different moods. Played ranked last season swapping between all three depending on how I felt in champ select and it kept things fresh through like 300 games of bear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Volibear have?

Volibear has 10 skins total as of 2023. Six Standards, three Epics, one Mythic (Prestige Duality Dragon). Not the biggest collection for a champion thats been around since 2011 but the post-rework skins more than make up for the slow early years. Quality over quantity situation.

What is the best Volibear skin?

Duality Dragon Volibear. 1350 RP and it completely transforms his VFX package. The dragon aesthetic fits his kit perfectly, especially the R slam. Been my go-to Volibear skin since it dropped in season 12. Prestige version is cleaner but harder to get. Either way, Dragonmancers line was made for this champion.

What is the cheapest Volibear skin?

Thunder Lord Volibear at 520 RP. Cheapest option and honestly it looks solid after the rework updated the model. Viking armor, lightning effects that match the kit. Great budget pick if you dont want to spend 1350 on an Epic. Northern Storm and Captain are also in the low RP range around 750.

Does Volibear have a Legendary skin?

No Legendary for Volibear yet. His highest tier is Mythic (Prestige Duality Dragon). The regular Epics at 1350 are his premium options in the shop. Kinda surprising honestly given how popular he got after the rework. Feels like a Legendary is overdue. Maybe season 15 if Riot remembers he exists.

What skinlines is Volibear in?

Volibear appears in Dragonmancers (Duality Dragon), Inkshadow, Thunder Lord, Arcticops, Cops and Robbers (Captain), Luchador (El Rayo), and Otherroads (Thousand-Pierced Bear). Spirit Blossom Springs is the newest addition. Dragonmancers and Inkshadow fit him best in my opinion. The older costume lines are fun but dated.

Does Volibear have chromas?

Yeah, the Epic-tier skins have chromas. Duality Dragon and Inkshadow both got chroma sets when they released. The Prestige version is basically a glorified chroma itself if you think about it. Standard skins like Thunder Lord don't have chromas though. Typical for older 520 RP skins, Riot wasnt doing chromas back then.

When was Volibear's last skin released?

Spirit Blossom Springs Volibear is the most recent, part of the Spirit Blossom Springs batch. Before that was Inkshadow in 2023. Riot's been pretty consistent with giving Volibear a skin every year or so since the rework. Big improvement from the drought between 2015 and 2020 when he got basically nothing.

Is Volibear worth buying skins for?

If you play him regularly in ranked, absolutely. Duality Dragon alone justifies the investment. Volibear's reworked model and animations make his skins look great in-game. The ult slam is one of those abilities that just feels better with premium VFX. Even at 520 RP Thunder Lord delivers. Good champion to invest cosmetics into.
