Maokai might be the most underrated champion when it comes to skins. Seriously. Eleven skins deep and I feel like nobody talks about his catalog. Been playing this tree since season 3, mostly as support these days but I still pull him out in top lane when the comp needs frontline. His kit is simple but the skin team has done some genuinely creative stuff with the saplings and the ult VFX over the years. Not gonna lie, a few of these skins completely change how it feels to play him in lane. The collection ranges from 2011 all the way to 2023 and theres a surprising amount of variety for a champion most people forget exists outside of pro play.

How Maokai's Skin Collection Shaped Up Over 12 Years

Eleven skins. Six Standards and five Epics. No Legendaries. Zero Ultimate tier. For a champion that's been in the game since February 2011, that breakdown feels about right. Maokai isn't the flashy pick that sells millions of skin bundles. He's the reliable frontline that shows up in your ranked games when someone needs to peel for the ADC. Riot knows this.

The early catalog is rough. Charred Maokai dropped in 2011 and it looks like it. Totemic came the same year. These are texture swaps from an era where 520 RP got you a recolor and you said thank you. Festive Maokai is a holiday skin from the Snowdown Showdown line, and Haunted Maokai leans into the Trick-or-Treat theme. Both are Legacy vault skins now so good luck finding them outside of Hextech crafting.

Could be wrong here but I think the real turning point was Meowkai in 2016. That's when Riot figured out you could do something genuinely funny with a tree champion. Cat saplings. Cat everything. The community lost it. After that, the skins started getting more ambitious. Worldbreaker brought the Aztec energy. Astronaut put him in space. DRX gave him the Worlds treatment in 2023.

The tier split tells the story. Early Maokai skins are cheap Standards because that's all Riot made back then. Everything from Meowkai onward is Epic at 1350 RP. No Legendary means no new voice lines on any skin, which honestly feels like a missed opportunity. Imagine Astronaut Maokai with space-themed VO. (Random thought but I'd pay 1820 for that without blinking.) The collection peaked somewhere around 2020-2022 and then the DRX Worlds skin closed it out in 2023. Been over a year since his last skin now. Feels like he's due.

Best Maokai Skins to Lock In

Meowkai. Full stop. This is the skin. If you play one game of Maokai in your life, do it with Meowkai equipped. The saplings are cats. His W sends a cat flying. The recall animation has him pulling out a ball of yarn. I've been running this in Diamond support games for years and the amount of tilt it generates is genuinely worth the 1350 RP. Played against a Draven one-trick last split who all-chatted "I cant take this lane seriously" after the third cat sapling chased him into river. Real stuff.

Worldbreaker Maokai is the tryhard pick. If Meowkai is the fun skin, Worldbreaker is the one you lock in when you actually want to climb. The golden-green color scheme reads clean on the Rift and the ability VFX have this earthy, ancient feel that matches his kit perfectly. Q slam feels heavier somehow. Might just be placebo but several people in my games have said the same thing. The Worldbreaker skinline fits Maokai naturally because he's already this ancient force of nature, so adding Aztec-inspired visuals just works.

Astronaut Maokai is third for me. Controversial take. The space suit is cute, the saplings are little astronaut creatures, and the VFX lean into the cosmic theme hard. But something about it feels too clean for Maokai. He's supposed to be this gnarled, angry tree and putting him in a helmet sanitizes the whole fantasy. Still a solid Epic though. Good value at 1350.

DRX Maokai gets points for being a Worlds skin. Released 2023 after DRX's championship run. The blue and white color palette is sharp. Not sure if it's just me but Worlds skins carry this prestige that regular shop skins don't. You see a DRX Maokai in your game and you assume that person either watched the finals or mains the champion. Either way they're probably decent.

Corrupted Petricite Maokai is the newest thematic direction. Dark, corrupted energy running through his bark. The concept is strong. Feels like Riot finally leaned into the horror angle that Maokai's lore supports. His W dive looks menacing with the corrupted particles. Solid addition to the roster.

Skinlines and Where Maokai Fits

Maokai shows up in a bunch of skinlines but the fit varies wildly. Worldbreaker is probably the most natural match. Ancient tree spirit meets ancient civilization aesthetic. It just clicks. The Infernal line gave us Charred Maokai which is literally a burning tree, so yeah, that tracks too. Simple concept but it works at the Standard tier.

Cats Versus Dogs is where Meowkai lives and honestly its the most creative use of a skinline for any champion in the game. A tree that throws cats. Someone at Riot pitched that in a meeting and the whole room said yes. (Sidebar: I have the Meowkai figurine on my desk. My girlfriend got it for me season 10 I think or maybe 11.) The Trick-or-Treat line with Haunted Maokai makes sense thematically since he's already a spooky tree. Snowdown Showdown gave us Festive Maokai which is a Christmas tree. Obvious but fun.

Soccer Cup with Goalkeeper Maokai is the weakest thematic fit. A tree playing soccer. Kinda feels like Riot was just filling roster slots for a promotional event. The skin exists, it's fine, but nobody's locking that in over Meowkai or Worldbreaker. Not happening.

Victorious Maokai deserves a mention because you cant buy it. Season reward from 2016 for Gold+ players. If you have it, cool. If you don't, you never will. That exclusivity gives it value even though the skin itself is just okay visually. Blue and gold, standard Victorious palette. Been playing this occasionally just to flex the season 6 grind.

Budget Picks vs Premium Maokai Skins

Good news. Maokai's entire catalog maxes out at 1350 RP. No Legendaries draining your wallet. The cheapest options are the old Standards at 520 RP - Charred, Totemic, Goalkeeper. These are recolors and texture swaps from 2011-2014. They look dated. Real talk though, Charred Maokai still has a certain charm to it. Burning tree. Clean concept. If you're on a budget and refuse to spend over 520, thats your pick.

At the Epic tier everything costs 1350. Meowkai is the best value in the entire catalog. New model, new VFX, new saplings, hilarious theme. 1350 well spent for mains. Worldbreaker is the second best value if you want something less meme and more serious. Astronaut rounds out the top three Epics.

The real budget move is Victorious Maokai if you earned it back in season 6. Free skin, decent quality, and the flex factor of showing people you played ranked that year. Can't put a price on nostalgia. For everyone else, save up the 1350 and grab Meowkai. That's the answer nine times out of ten. Maybe just my experience but I've never met a Maokai main who regretted that purchase. Not once in my Diamond games over the past four seasons.
